«WASTING MONEY PUTS YOU IN A REAL PARTY MOOD»

But the banks continue to be rewarded for their many failures. Let's start with bankruptcy reform. The banks scored a lopsided victory on Thursday when the Senate rejected an amendment that would have allowed homeowners facing foreclosure to renegotiate their mortgages under the guidance of a bankruptcy judge. The measure would have helped 1.7 million homeowners keep their houses, and preserved an additional $300 billion in home equity.Given the tidal wave of foreclosures that have so destabilized our economy, this seems like a no-brainer piece of legislation. There were over 800,000 foreclosures in the first three months of 2009 -- more than 341,000 in March alone. But the banking lobbyists went after it with guns a-blazing - even after Durbin and the measure's other backers seriously diluted the bill. These concessions did nothing to sway the Mortgage Bankers Association (whose members' subprime schemes have helped bring us to the point of collapse), the Financial Services Roundtable, and the American Bankers Association, among other hired guns. And their aim was true -- and deadly. Heading into the vote, those pushing for reform hoped to gather the 60 supporters needed to bring the cramdown amendment to a final vote. Instead, Durbin struggled to find 45 Senators willing to side with consumers. The final tally: Bankers 51, Consumers 45.

«IT'S CALLED GOSSIP AND OF COURSE IT'S AN OBSESSION OF MINE»

What to do? For most people, bailing on the Web or e-mail or cellphones isn't even feasible, let alone practical or ultimately desirable. (I shudder at the thought of living without my beloved Tivo.) Besides, modern life really isn't making us stupider: IQ tests have to be regularly updated to make them harder; otherwise the average score would have climbed 3 percent per decade since the early 1930s. (The average score is supposed to remain at a constant 100 points.) And IQ measures problem-solving ability, rather than sheer data retained, which has grown even faster over the same interval. Each of us knows many more people and facts than our counterparts of 100 years ago; it's just that the importance of those people and facts remains somewhat uncertain. Knowing a little bit about Lindsay Lohan and Simon Cowell (two people I recognize despite having no active interest in either one) can't really be equated with knowing a bit about Marie Curie or Lord Mountbatten. We have more information, but it isn't necessarily more valuable information.

Dolly Parton has revealed that her extensive cosmetic surgery is a gift to her fans and her way of showing them her appreciation of their loyalty. Speaking to New York magazine, the 63-year old country and western singer explained that she owed it to her hordes of followers to remain "looking like Dolly". She denied that her breast surgery and various other plastic surgery procedures were the result of vanity. Parton elaborated: "I look at it like it is - if you've got the money and you're going to be out there, you owe it to people not to look like a dog if you can help it." Her desire to stand out in a crowd and be at the centre of events is another reason for her decision to go under the knife, she continued.

It’s good to be Madonna’s sometime flame. Model Jesus Luz, who’s helping Madge recover from her equestrian injury, will be featured in Dolce & Gabbana’s fall-winter menswear campaign and has Marc Jacobs writing letters in support of his U.S. work permit. Kobe Bryant and Spike Lee were all smiles at Saturday’s premiere of Lee’s film on the NBA superstar. But it wasn’t always that way; Lee had to work for months to get Bryant’s approval to make the film, even driving to his house to beg for a meeting, where Bryant refused to see him.

For their first collection of new material in half a decade, legendary hip-hop trio De La Soul chose to work with Nike instead of a Big Four record label or even an indie. For their new 44-minute workout LP, "Are You in?: Nike+ Original Run," arriving in the iTunes Store tomorrow, the 20-year music veterans said they were never looking for a brand to support them; they merely found a generous partner who also wanted to be a creative collaborator. Or vice versa."When an opportunity presents itself, and it's challenging, it's tasteful and it actually opens doors to new listeners, a new audience, we're up for it," founding member David Jude Jolicoeur, aka Trugoy the Dove, told Madison & Vine.In past years, the group has helped design two signature versions of the Dunk SB shoe and performed at multiple Nike outdoor events.

Edward Smith: Would you like to see your pictures on as many walls as possible, then?
Andy Warhol: Uh, no, I like them in closets.
Edward Smith: Why is it more of a pleasure to do 30 or 40 pictures than to do just one?
Andy Warhol: Then I can, uh, listen to my soundabout which looks just like the thing that I'm wearing now, and you can listen to opera and stuff like that.
Edward Smith: Does that mean you don't have to think when you're painting?
Andy Warhol: No, you can listen to really good music.
Edward Smith: So, what, painting is an excuse to listen to really good music?
Andy Warhol: Oh, yeah.

Edward Smith: What do you think is the characteristic of a really nice person? Some people you obviously do like more than others.
Andy Warhol: Ummm, well, if they talk a lot.
Edward Smith: What, and don't make you talk?
Andy Warhol: Yeah, yes, that's a really nice person.
Edward Smith: Thank you, Andy.

I've met Gwyneth Paltrow a couple of times at parties and she always seemed very pleasant. I was impressed when she ditched the mumsy look, and pitched up in a tiny lace dress and killer heels. But then things in Gwynnie world seem to have gone a bit pear-shaped. She shares a trainer with Madonna, and is a yoga nut – nothing too unusual about that. But when she decided to issue embarrassing twaddle on her website, offering useless "advice" and tips about health, warning bells rang. Too many workouts can rot your brain! Now, she seems to have picked up Madge's streak of ruthlessness – offering a chubby friend a free pass to a gym.I'm sure she meant well, but how rude. Can these paragons of physical perfection not cope with pals who may be wider than a stick of celery? Are they cleansing their surroundings by eliminating fatties from their lives along with their toxins? I've a horrible feeling it may be true. Just as people end up looking like their dogs, so Gwyneth and Madonna seem happiest surrounded by clones and yes-people who've signed up to the regime. Pass me a doughnut, please.

THE WARHOL ATTITUDE: SO BAD IT'S GOOD

FROM OPERA TO JAZZ

But who knew that Warhol, the pioneer of Pop Art, drew more than 50 album covers over the span of his career — and not just for rock, but for classical music, opera and jazz? These works are the subject of a lavishly illustrated, fastidiously documented book, “Andy Warhol: The Record Covers, 1949-1987,” published jointly by Prestel and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. The author, Paul Maréchal, is curator of the art collection at the Power Corporation of Canada, which consists mainly of French decorative art of the 18th and 19th centuries.

In addition, one out of four college students showed signs of narcissism in 2006, according to a national study of 37,000 students conducted by the book’s authors. And the rise and fall of self-important figures like Eliot Spitzer, Alex Rodriguez and John Edwards demonstrates that narcissism isn’t limited to the young, the book states.Robert Galinsky, founder of the New York Reality TV School, said that unscripted programming has given talented strivers unprecedented outlets. Still, he acknowledged that more than half of his students are driven by a shortsighted obsession with stardom.“They say, ‘I’m so interesting, funny and wild, there should be show about me,’” Galinsky said.

I guess useful news is when they 're telling us Britney is pregnant and junk news when they're telling us Britney's sister is pregnant. Or is it the other way around? That's great. I mean it gives women something to talk about when they're having their nails done. Some kid at the office asked me what I thought about Forbes making a list of the most influential babies in Hollywood. I don't know. I just want to be on the richest dead celebrities list when I'm gone. Before I wanted to be come back as a big diamant on Elizabeth Taylor's finger but not I changed my mind since she's not moving around much. PARIS—In 2008, New York's auction market produced only $2.9 billion, down approximately 23 percent from a year ago and falling behind London, the new global leader in art auction sales. According to Artprice's 2008 Art Market Trends report, New York's share of global art sales fell from 43 to 35.6 percent. This reduction, in large part due to the overall economic climate, was exacerbated by extremely poor November sales that Artprice contends occurred largely because of the "over-optimistic estimates to which the auction houses still clung, imposing reserve prices that were quite simply too high."

Concurrently, London sales increased $271 million from 2007 to 2008, eclipsing New York's cumulative sales by $8 million, according to the report. London's overall numbers benefited strongly from the success of Damien Hirst's single-artist auction, "Beautiful Inside My Head Forever," and a July 1 Sotheby's contemporary art sale that garnered £80 million ($116 million), a record-setting result for a summer sale in Europe.

In the first major disclosure of corruption in the $750-billion financial bailout program, federal investigators said Monday they have opened 20 criminal probes into possible securities fraud, tax violations, insider trading and other crimes. The cases represent only the first wave of investigations, and the total fraud could ultimately reach into the tens of billions of dollars, according to Neil Barofsky, the special inspector general overseeing the bailout program. The disclosures reinforce fears that the hastily designed and rapidly changing bailout program run by the Treasury Department and Federal Reserve is going to carry a heavy price of fraud against taxpayers -- even as questions grow about its ability to stabilize the nation's financial system. Barofsky said the complex nature of the bailout program makes it "inherently vulnerable to fraud, waste and abuse, including significant issues relating to conflicts of interest facing fund managers, collusion between participants, and vulnerabilities to money laundering."

FROM ANDY WARHOL TO PARIS HILTON

During his life Andy Warhol was famous for not talking much. Often he would just say «Gee, that's great». Today Paris Hilton had followed the same tactic. And considering the result one has to say like her: «That's Hot». Warhol also believed that «shopping was more american than thinking». And today stars have replaced models on magazines covers to become walking billboards for various fashion and beauty products. As artist Barbara Kruger would remind us: «I shop therefore I am».

BEING ALL THINGS TO ALL MEN

I asked art historian Edward Lucie Smith about the influence of Andy Warhol. «Andy specialized in being all things to all men. If you stood next to him at a party as I once did and said - Isn't it a lousy party he'd say Yeah». But if you stood next to him in the same party and said -Isn't this a great party! he'd say Yeah!». People read into him whatever they want to find».

BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE ONLY HAVE TO BE BEAUTIFUL

I asked Christopher Makos about his opinion on Warhol's influence today: «Warhol impact is being felt in the most unusual way, he has become the prophet of all things modern. People are actually stars today without having to do anything except be beautiful. Beautiful people only have to be beautiful to have the world at their feet. Andy believed this and now the world believes it too».

STRAIGHT GUYS IS THE NEW GAY

PHILOSOPHY FOR THE 21st CENTURY: LOVE

Young people think it's better to be loved by someone you don't than the contrary. Old people know the opposite is better.

ANTHONY D'OFFAY

By the time d'Offay was 25, he was already running a tiny gallery off Regent Street. In 1969, he moved to nearby Dering Street and, over the next three decades, worked with everyone from the British duo Gilbert and George and Lucian Freud to international superstars such as Jeff Koons. In 1986, he did a show with Warhol, shortly before the American artist's death. "Andy said, 'You think of a subject'," d'Offay recalls. "I commissioned him to do a series of self-portraits. Recently, important ones have cost up to $10 million. They were my idea." What was Warhol like? "Extremely shy, very monosyllabic. Everything was 'just great', but what he was actually thinking was difficult to gauge. The only time he really came alive was when he was taking someone's portrait with his Polaroid camera."

«GOOD BUSINESS IS THE BEST ART»

April 17 2009 (Bloomberg) -- Castlestone Management Ltd., a New York-based money manager with about $640 million in assets, is starting a fund to buy modern art as it seeks to gain from the recent decline in prices. The Collection of Modern Art fund is open to people with as little as $10,000 to invest and will buy the work of artists such as Banksy, Damien Hirst and Willem de Kooning, Castlestone said today in a statement. It is the only open art fund for individuals and will start investing at the end of May with $25 million under management, the firm said. “With a low threshold this is an unusual investor base,” said Anders Petterson, founder of ArtTactic, a London-based art- market researcher. “Opportunities are presenting themselves, and if you have a fund that can take advantage of them it will be fantastic.”

MODELING FOR 15 MINUTES OF FAME

POST WARHOL PREDICTION: IN THE FUTURE HOLLYWOOD STARS WILL DESCRIBE THE MAKING OF THEIR REAL & FICTIONAL SEX TAPES ON TWITTER

CHANGING THE FAME GAME

As Kutcher and Moore use Twitter to give fans a closer look at their day-to-day lives out of the spotlight, others -- like, say, Jon Favreau -- are using it to also provide updates and images from the set of their new films. Not only did Favreau control the release of the first behind-the-scenes image from Iron Man 2, but he also levels with fans by talking about how scary and stressful the filmmaking process is. It's real and raw, and to be honest it's quite fascinating to watch these folks bypass the publicists and the studios and simply take control of it all from their very own desktop.

So does this kind of stuff just feed our celebrity-obsessed addictions, or does the honesty and intimacy of a Twitter feed help bring them down off their magical pedestal to a point where their personal updates are way more interesting than that blurry beach bikini shot stuck on page 47 of this week's issue of People?

«ATHLETES ARE GOING TO BE THE NEW MEDIA STARS»

«WOMEN IN REVOLT»

Stacey Anderson is a successful Scottsdale real-estate agent and mother of four kids. Add another label to the 40-year-old blonde's resume: She is the star of the new TV Land reality show called "The Cougar.""The cougar definition doesn't bother me," she says cheerfully. "I don't have an issue with it. I had a really lot of amazing experiences with the guys, a lot of laughter and tears and bonding."those who may be slang-impaired out there, "cougar" refers to a woman who dates men several years her junior. Cougars are hardly a rare breed on television: Courteney Cox Arquette is filming an upcoming sitcom called "Cougar Town," and older-woman/ younger-man relationships have played out on "One Tree Hill," "Desperate Housewives" and "Lipstick Jungle."In Anderson's show, she takes her pick from a group of 20 men, all in their 20s.

«GOOD BUSINESS IS THE BEST ART»

In the manner of a successful corporate brand, Madonna has spread herself far and wide.Aside from her creative output — 14 albums, eight world tours, 19 feature films, videos and a series of children’s books — she has been an indefatigable dealmaker. In 1992 she set up Maverick, a record label with video, film and publishing interests, which she jointly owned with Time Warner until 2004.Since 1989, when she accepted 5-million from Pepsi for a TV commercial (which got pulled after one showing for its presumed blasphemy), she has been involved in ad campaigns for BMW, Max Factor, Versace and Gap. Last year she put her name to a clothing line for high-street retailer H&M. This year she has collaborated with Ed Hardy on a tattoo-inspired range for Christian Audigier. Then there are the merchandising deals, investments in fine art and property and appearance fees.... About one fifth of Madonna’s £300-million fortune is in property. She now owns six houses in London. She also owns an 18th-century Mayfair pub, The Punchbowl, in Farm Street, which is near the £15-million townhouse that was her main home while she was married to Guy Ritchie...Madge Central is now a huge apartment on New York’s West 57th Street. Her other home is a villa on Sunset Boulevard. Her art collection, over 300 paintings, including works by Léger, Dali, Man Ray, Damien Hirst and Frida Kahlo, is valued at around £80-million. She paid 5-million for Picasso’s Buste de Femme à la Frange.

THE WARHOL ATTITUDE: SO BAD IT'S GOOD

CULTURE NOW: FROM POP CULTURE TO CELEBRITY BASHING CULTURE

When Eminem burst onto the scene, he enraptured the nation with his gift for saying exactly what the rest of us were already thinking but were too afraid to say out loud. But a lot has changed since the acclaimed satirist's last album -- "Encore" -- came out in 2004, both in politics and in pop culture. An entire industry has been built on celebrity bashing. Which is why Eminem's new video feels so flat. With the steady current of sniggering, and downright damaging, remarks about famous people populating the public consciousness today, Eminem's new song, "We Made You," feels at best irrelevant. And at worst, truly mean.In light of recent attacks on Jessica Simpson for her weight gain -- and her well-publicized battle with her figure -- segments of the video that feature a bloated, Jessica Simpson look-alike chowing down on burgers just feel stale and tacky. And also, about a month too late.

«I BELIEVE MEDIA IS ART»

Fame itself is impossible on YouTube because everyone's on display and the show lasts forever. Fame only works when it has an expiry date, as Warhol himself knew.Thauberger's challenging Chelsea Girls blows huge holes in the old fame game as the Vancouver artist deconstructs and demystifies Warhol's multi-hour work of the same name, the closest he ever came to a mainstream movie hit. Filmed in 1966 in eight rooms in New York's Chelsea Hotel, Warhol's Chelsea Girls shows a sexed-up coterie of Warhol Factory superstars starring in their own, imaginary private trashy Hollywood flicks. Thauberger's Chelsea Girls, shot in 2008 in Victoria's Chelsea Apartments, replicates Warhol's split-screen process as if the Vancouver artist had sampled it from the internet.

«I NEVER READ. I JUST LOOK AT PICTURES»

WARHOLIAN QUOTE OF THE DAY

«When I'm good I'm very, very good, but when I'm bad, I'm better. »

-Mae West

PETER BRANT

PB: You really have to be looking 15 or 20 years from now because an artist should be that much ahead of his time to forecast something aesthetically, politically or culturally…For instance, one of the earliest pictures that I bought was [Andy Warhol’s] Shot Blue Marilyn. Today that is like looking at the Mona Lisa. Marilyn Monroe has a totally different image than she had in 1964 when she passed away. It’s like Elton John’s song. We’ve looked at her life in retrospect since then and what Andy Warhol projected is something that now is very accurate—but nobody knew it at the time. The art world cognoscenti thought that picture was garish and photographic. It was not considered beautiful and not embraced by the art world…But that’s what Andy did, he was the radical artist at that time.

To me it’s about looking at something visually or conceptually that is really going to change your view, something that is going to set a new aesthetic because of what it means culturally. Then it will become socialised and become beautiful. But it has to have some importance, some angst that changes your life in some sense. It has to be troublesome in some way.

“MUSCLES ARE GREAT:EVERYBODY SHOULD HAVE AT LEAST ONE THAT THEY CAN SHOW OFF"

«GOOD BUSINESS IS THE BEST ART»

What this means for the art market is simple: a steep drop in prices for the work of younger blue chip artists awash in inventory both present and future, and an expanding universe of price appreciation for the limited set of artworks created by those gone by. Savvy shows such as the late Picasso "Mosqueteros" at Gagosian Gallery and the recent Louise Nevelson retrospective at PaceWildenstein in Chelsea have already anticipated this trend, but there are many more possibilities, especially second tier AbExers like Cavallon, Kadish, Pavia, Joop Sanders and Mark Tobey; forgotten Color Field painters like Jack Bush, Larry Poons and Jules Olitski; and ‘60s Popsters such as George Sugarman and Larry Zox.  Even Jay Gorney has opened an Allan D'Acangelo show. If the supply is limited and the art tied to a historical movement, dealers’ pockets should soon fill with devalued bucks which they in turn will reinvest in inventory. Let the boom begin!

SYDNEY: The recession has made beefy blokes like Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig more appealing than scented metrosexuals like Hugh Grant and , an Australian sociologist said. Demographer Bernard Salt said that as the global financial crisis wore on, lots of women would eye a motor mechanic for a life partner rather than an investment banker. "During the downturn, the theory is that women are concerned about safety, security and food supply, so their taste in men will shift from the androgynous, hairless metrosexual towards the more muscular, primal, hairy male," Salt told Australian news agency AAP.

PERSONNALY I LOVED PORNO AND I BOUGHT LOTS OF IT ALL THE TIME"

People flock to see serial killers dismembering students and hitchhikers in big budget Hollywood films but it'd be insane to claim that all, or even most, audience members took the violence seriously and would like to see it reproduced in real life.
Movies are widely accepted as escapism and I think many men feel the same way about porn: it's a world where the women are young and hot and willing (or old and saggy or hairy or fat or whatever) and everyone goes home happy; again, fantasy.
Of course there is a difference between a woman (or man) being filmed having actual sex and a person being pretend-murdered in a movie - but they all remain actors 'playing a role' and adults who've chosen to work in these jobs.
Yes, a lot of porn goes far beyond the 'norm' - in both heterosexual and gay and lesbian porn - but that is the nature of fantasy; we're aroused by things we'd never openly admit in public, we keep them as thoughts or we act them out in the privacy of our homes with a consenting, adult partner. Many women have extremely explicit, violent, bizarre and, I daresay, misandric sexual fantasies; taboo subjects and acts are not purely a masculine province.

WITHOUT OBSESSIONS THERE'S NO GREAT ARTIST.

Andy Warhol once said everything he painted - from a can of Campbell's soup to a bottle of Coke - should really be classed as a portrait. Now the Grand Palais in Paris has assembled the world's biggest ever exhibition of Warhol's portraits in a revolutionary new interpretation of the American artist. The show, Warhol's Wide World, argues Warhol-lovers should drop their obsession with the label "pop art" and instead see the artist as a master portraitist, obsessed by life, death and religion, in the vein of masters such as Raphael.

«POP ART IS FOR EVERYONE»

Q: A recent article in The Guardian said that the Pet Shop Boys “merge pop and art perfectly” and compared what you guys have done in this regard to The Beatles. There aren’t many bands who’ve collaborated both with pop groups like Girls Aloud and experimental filmmakers like Derek Jarman …

A: No, there probably aren’t. Well, we love collaboration, we love bringing people into our world, into the world of pop. Not many people work with architects, but Zaha Hadid did set designs for us [on the 1999/2000 world tour]. I think it makes the whole thing more interesting, because pop music is a visual art as well as being about music, and looking at different ways to present yourself is always very exciting. We genuinely love pop music, which is why we’re interested in Girls Aloud, but we also like independent film and we also like fashion. So it’s just interesting to bring all those elements together, to see what happens. We always try to do things differently from anyone else, we try to be unique. You can’t really reinvent the wheel but we do try to bring other elements into pop music; we always try to work with architects, artists, opera designers.

I told my husband, if they changed the names from players to actors, it could be the cover of US Weekly! As those two worlds merge, it's becoming more acceptable for straight men to be interested in celebrities."
