أعتقد أن شباب اليوم هم رائع

But the most important things 2011's protests have in common don't come from copying — they come naturally. All of the revolts are led by young men and women, many of whom are novices at political activism. All use modern tools, like social-networking sites on the Internet and texting over mobile phones, to organize and amplify their protests. And all have the same demands: a right to choose and change their leaders, an end to rampant corruption, the opportunity for employment and improvement. "Whether you're in Tunis or in Cairo or in Manama," says Ala'a Shehabi, 30, a Bahraini economics lecturer and political activist, "young Arabs are all on the same wavelength."

«IT'S CALLED GOSSIP AND OF COURSE IT'S AN OBSESSION OF MINE»

Colorlines.com’s gender blogger Akiba Solomon wrote about a new influx of Asian models on the runway at this past week’s New York Fashion Week. Urban fashion blog Fashion Bomb Daily has another trend they’ve been observing: black male models used as props in editorial fashion shoots. They point out that the only time you see black male models in beauty magazines is when they’re surrounding female models as props, and often times gazing at women lustfully. The last time we had a black male supermodel was in the 1990’s when Tyson Beckford was headlining Ralph Lauren ad campaigns and appearing in Toni Braxton music videos. Since then you can’t even find a black male model on magazine’s Top 10 lists.

It’s gone. In its place: tight steps, wooden torsos. Oddly pitched-forward gaits. Stiffly held shoulders or too much shoulder, torquing the body with an exaggerated sway.”

The highlight of the evening was unquestionably a rediscovered, bold red-and-stark-white, Andy Warhol Self-Portrait, 1967, unseen in public for over 30 years. This work is not in the artist's catalogue raisonné, but importantly has been approved, stamped and numbered by the powerful Andy Warhol Art Authentication Board. Bidding, which began at £2.2m, was exciting, mostly due to two of the art market's biggest hitters—the dealer-collector José Mugrabi and über-gallerist Larry Gagosian—going head to head in the saleroom for the same work. Gagosian eventually won the day, bagging the self-portrait for a cool £10.8m (est £3m to £5m).

MEN IS THE NEW DUMB

The suicide rate (2) for men has for several decades been at least three times higher than that for women. To this day, national statistics show that men die significantly younger  (3) than women. Men are four times more likely to become dependent on alcohol (4) than women. Men make up the vast majority of single homeless persons  (5). Nearly all prisoners in the UK are male (6) and the majority of these prisoners have mental health problems which means in effect that our prisons are highly populated with males who need help with their mental health. In our schools girls are now regularly outperforming boys academically. Men and women still to this day have different employment conditions and parental rights. There are very few gender-specific health services for men in the UK but a great many for women.

Alistair Newton used to have some nasty things to say about Lady Gaga. “I had written her off as the vacuous pop star of the moment. To me, ‘I wanna take a ride on your disco stick’ speaks for itself,” says Newton, artistic director of Ecce Homo Theatre. But then Newton read an essay Gaga had written while attending New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, back when she was merely Stefani Germanotta, age 17. The essay is about installation artist Spencer Tunick, nudity and monstrousness; it even quotes French Renaissance writer Michel de Montaigne. In the slickest, most attention-grasping pop star of the moment, Newton had discovered a fellow academic-theory geek.“People ask, ‘Who’s the real Stefani?’ But I don’t think there is such a person. If you create a persona and you act like that all the time, then that person becomes real,” says Newton. “Gaga actively presents herself as a saviour. She’ll say to her fans, ‘I’m here to save you, I’m here to rescue you.’ Her fans are her little monsters and she’s Mama Monster. There’s a real game in that.”

«EVERYTHING IS BEAUTIFUL»

HOU, O my Grief, be wise and tranquil still,
The eve is thine which even now drops down,
To carry peace or care to human will,
And in a misty veil enfolds the town.

While the vile mortals of the multitude,
By pleasure, cruel tormentor, goaded on,
Gather remorseful blossoms in light mood--
Grief, place thy hand in mine, let us be gone

Far from them. Lo, see how the vanished years,
In robes outworn lean over heaven's rim;
And from the water, smiling through her tears,

Remorse arises, and the sun grows dim;
And in the east, her long shroud trailing light,
List, O my grief, the gentle steps of Night

IT'S USELESS TO BE YOUNG WITHOUT BEING BEAUTIFUL AND VICE VERSA

«I JUST READ EVERYTHING»

The scenario raises a rarely discussed issue: why is women's fashion so dominated by gay men? And is the wonderful world of fashion really tainted by heterophobia? It's true that naming straight designers can easily revert to a dull parlour game second only to listing famous Belgians in its count-them-on-one-hand limitations (even then, one's insider friends will take pleasure in telling you that there are question marks over the shortlist anyway) and fashion's more controversial spokesmen do little to dispel the myth. Here's Tom Ford on the subject: 'I love women,' Ford told Interview magazine this year. 'But I lust after beautiful women in the way that I lust after a beautiful piece of sculpture… My lust for them is the same as my lust for beauty in all things… that's why I think gay men make better designers.'American designer Michael Vollbracht, from Bill Blass, claims gay men may actually be genetically superior at fashion. 'I am someone who is really pro-homosexual. I am an elitist. I am better than straight people. Women are confused about who they want to be. I believe that male designers have the fantasy level that women do not.'So perhaps it is not surprising that in 2005 Tara Subkoff, one of the co-founders of the US label Imitation of Christ, damned fashion as 'a gay man's profession' and even went so far as to accuse American Vogue editor Anna Wintour of supporting only 'young, gay men'.

For many American couples, this is not just a thought experiment. Researchers have recently begun scrutinizing a new kind of family ruled by "breadwinner wives" or "top income wives," defined as women who make more money than their husbands. About 22 percent of American marriages of people over 30 fall into this category, up from 4 percent in 1970. (For men without a college degree, the rate is higher: One-quarter are married to wives who earn more than they do.) And demographers expect the number of such marriages to grow, as women continue to get more college degrees than young men and to outearn them, especially early in their careers.

She’s a pop preacher-woman in the pulpit of performance art. Critic Camille Paglia suggests she represents the end of the sexual revolution. Elton John calls her new song an “anthem” for gays. That about covers it from A to B, which is about as far as any performer has to go these days.

-Why do you all rove around clubs in those striped shirts?

A cheap shot! We don't all wear striped shirts, you know. The good ones wear superior patterns like plaid.
But to answer your question: striped shirts (particularly those of the narrow, vertical variety) are the perfect medium between corporate casual and casual-casual. (You can thank straight guys everywhere for making that a necessary distinction.) The trick is to find a shirt that looks too casual for a job in Inside Sales and too fancy for bottle service at a Lake Tahoe Casino nightclub.I would love to tell you that the goal is to show we're classy without being stuffy, but really we're probably just trying to hide a beer gut. Let’s be honest: one of the main reasons so many people went and saw the movie Fight Club is because they were promised shirtless Brad Pitt and Jared Leto. So is it any surprise that in reality, one of the sports world’s burgeoning pastimes is an underground boxing club whose members are either male models or are trying to break into the modeling industry?
In a recent T Magazine story, reporter Jacob Brown profiles Friday Night Throwdown, a traveling meeting of, well, professionally pretty boys who set up regulation boxing rings in Manhattan warehouses and have at each other — all under the guise of certified referees, of course. You’d think the models (and aspiring models) would be concerned about messing up their faces, but Brown found out that for some of them, the scars are worth it — and so is the novelty of seeing guys who shouldn’t have anything to fight about duke it out.

Hefner, 84, and Playboy Enterprises are hiding the true value of the company’s assets in an effort to take it private without paying a fair price for the minority stake that Hefner doesn’t own, according to an amended complaint filed Feb. 4 in Delaware Chancery Court in Wilmington. The information sent to minority shareholders describing the deal “seems designed to intentionally mislead, or at a minimum, confuse Playboy’s public shareholders,” lawyers for the shareholders, Charles A. Getty — known by the press as the "Golden Hippie" for his red locks,  left-wing friends and bohemian lifestyle — achieved notoriety when he was captured in Italy in 1973. His captors cut off one of his ears, mailed it to an Italian newspaper and requested $17 million in ransom. "This is Paul's ear," read an accompanying note. "If we don't get some money within 10 days, the other ear will arrive. In other words he will arrive in little pieces».Although reluctant to pay the demanded money, Getty's grandfather reportedly gave the captors nearly $3 million for his release. Getty was dumped at a gas station, five months after his capture. After his release, he became a serious drug and alcohol abuser and hung out with Andy Warhol's art cohort in New York.In 1981, Getty overdosed on drugs, leaving him paralyzed, partially blind, and unable to speak.

.A few months ago, it seems, a group of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity pledges marched onto Yale's campus and chanted crude slogans "making light of" rape and necrophilia, according to the Yale alumni magazine.("No means yes, yes means anal" -- you get the idea.)A "storm of controversy" erupted. Yale administrators expressed shock and outrage."We will confront hateful speech when it has been uttered," vowed President Richard Levin and Dean Mary Miller, according to the magazine. "No member of our community should engage in such demeaning behavior."The Yale Women's Center went ballistic, of course, and "students, administrators, and alumni all wrestled with how to respond to a public display that many found offensive."An online alumni petition condemning the chants drew nearly 2,000 signatures. Predictably, the frat boys -- denounced on all sides -- apologized for their crude behavior.OK, OK, the Yale critics are right. Young gentlemen should not conduct themselves this way. But wait, what else is happening on campus? Well, there's Yale's biennial "Sex Week" -- a nine-day, student-sponsored event timed to coincide with Valentine's Day and blessed by university bigwigs. Last year, a Sex Week headliner was porn megastar Sasha Grey. Grey's claim to fame is her insatiable appetite for being sexually brutalized. Among porn performers, she stands out for "her take-no-prisoners attitude toward the hardest of hard-core sex scenes and consensual degradation," according to the Los Angeles Times.

The general perception of the society focuses on a direct conflict between feminism and romance. Therefore, Laurie Rudman and Julie Phelan, from Rutgers University in the US, carried out a study to challenge this perception. They conducted a laboratory survey of 242 American undergraduates and an online survey including 289 older adults who were more likely to have had longer relationships and greater life experience. They looked at the perception of men and women of their own feminism and its link to relationship health, measured by a combination of overall relationship quality, agreement about gender equality, relationship stability and sexual satisfaction. The findings of the survey showed that having a feminist partner was associated with healthier heterosexual relationships for women.  Men with feminist partners also reported both more stable relationships and greater sexual satisfaction.

«OH, ART IS TOO HARD»

The average Canadian visual artist earns less than $14,000 per year, an 11-per-cent decrease since 1990, according to CARFAC (Canadian Artists Representation/ Les front des artistes Canadien), a national organization of visual artists. "Even $100 would make a big difference with some artists," says Ottawa artist Pat Durr, a past president of the group. To the majority of Canadian painters, sculptors, etc., the thought of saving for retirement is as surreal as a Dali masterpiece. That's why the expansion of droit de suite has finally reached Canada. CARFAC is lobbying to include artists' resale rights, or ARR, in Bill C-32, the copyright legislation now working its way through the parliamentary sausage grinder. The law would give Canadian visual artists a claim to a small percentage of the price of any of their works resold for more than $1,000 at auction or in a commercial gallery. It would apply to a late artist's heirs for up to 50 years, the legal lifespan of copyright in Canada.

.Can Men and Women really be JUST friends?

No. Well, yes, technically. It all depends on how OK you are (you're a woman, I'm assuming) with being friends with someone who wants to have sex with you. That and if there are people this man would like to have sex with other than you.
As long as there is someone else this guy would rather have sex with - someone other than you, you'll probably be fine friends. (Again, we're operating under the assumption that you don't actually want to sex up this guy. That is your own problem, lady. And you should just give up trying to be friends.)Don't be your man-friend's last resort, is what I'm saying. Distract your man-friend by setting him up with your easy ladyfriends or something. Pay for professionals if you have to. This is what modern Male-Female friendships have come to.

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art has just enriched its permanent collection with 195 promised gifts of works by some of the biggest names in art in the last half century. They include Jackson Pollock, David Smith, Willem de Kooning, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Francis Bacon and Gerhard Richter. The museum will not put a dollar value on the cache pledged by various benefactors, who include present and former board members, but today's resurgent auction market might reckon its total value in nine figures. This acquisition comes less than a year after SFMOMA got a tremendous boost with its long-term agreement to steward the collection of Doris and Donald Fisher, (The GAP stores) some 1,100 works, most of them by defining creative figures of the mid to late 20th century such as Alexander Calder, Cy Twombly, Agnes Martin, Andy Warhol, Richard Serra and Chuck Close. This latest spate of art kicks the museum's already high national and international standing up another notch, locking it in among the top five American institutions collecting in the same areas.

BABY JANE HOLZER

The foundation of Jane Holzer’s fortune, if not her success, are four buildings on Worth Avenue originally purchased by her father. Out of that has come a remarkable art collection, a brief flirtation with producing movies that resulted in Kiss of the Spider Woman, among others, and lavish abodes in New York and Southampton. She met Warhol in 1964, and that day for Baby Jane – and yes, she got her name because of the gaudy Bette Davis/Joan Crawford movie What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? – was the day her life changed. She became the first of Warhol’s coterie of celebrities who gathered at his Manhattan headquarters, known as The Factory. He would make avant-garde films and art pieces about them and publicize their exploits as underground "superstars.""I didn’t understand how famous he would be. The Factory was all silver foil. Foil everywhere, even hanging from the pipes. When I walked in for the first time Andy was painting flowers on the floor."

The survey asked a series of questions tailored to help researchers divide the group into two camps: homophobic or non-homophobic.The subjects were then put in a room, one at a time, to view both homosexual and heterosexual erotic films. Before the viewing, researchers fixed gauges up to the subjects’ penises in order to measure arousal levels. In the group deemed homophobic, tests found that there were a substantial number of high arousal levels during the homoerotic clips, while the non-homophobic group showed little to no arousal to the same clips.
