PHILOSOPHY FOR THE 21st CENTURY: ARGENT

ARTSY BEHAVIOUR 101

At first, Andy Warhol, for exemple would go out to dinner and wouldn't know one end of that long
lineup of silverware on the table from the other, and so he would sit there at some five or six-course
dinner at the Burden's or wherever without touching a morsel, not the crème sénégalaise, nor the lobster
cardinal, nor the veal Valdostana, nor the salad Grant Street nor the fresh pear halves Harry & David-
until finally the lady seated to his left would say «But, Mr Warhol you haven't touch a thing!» Whereupon
Andy would say «Oh, I only eat candy». Warhol learned fast, howver, and he soon knew how to take
whatever he wanted. The bohemian, by definition was one who did things the bourgeois didn't dare do.
True enough, said Warhol, and he added an inspired refinement: nothing is more bourgeois than to be
afraid to look bourgeois»

THE FAME OBSESSION

«Liz, Imelda, Gala-those were the three portraits that Andy always wanted and never got.
He wanted them for different reasons:Gala was art history, Imelda meant money and power and with Elizabeth Taylor
he was chasing the stars, as he had been since the age of eight.

MADONNA AND THE ROXY

«In this heady milieu, painters and sculptors, the Andy Warhol crowd among them, rubbed shoulders with drag queens or punk stars like Malcom Mc Laren or with The Ramones and The New York Dolls, while Truman Capote might be found swapping anectodes with Freddy Mercury of Queen, or David Byrne of the Talking Heads. «It was a very special time that has not been duplicated since» recalls Vito Bruno, manager of the Roxy. «We were all very much anti-Studio 54. They were elitist, while we believed that it was what's in your bones rather than what's on your bones that gave you entry: kids with sparkle, rubbing shoulders with Warhol and Mick Jagger»

CALVIN KLEIN

Then Calvin Klein invited us to see his new appartment on 66th and Central Park West. Diana Ross went in a limo. The place is beautiful, a duplex, with a gym and modernized windows and he did it himself, all white and he has a stairway like Halston's. wooden with no banister, and it looks like a work of art, and it's very scary. And everything's in order and he collects the same things I do. Stieglitz's pictures of Georgia O'Keeffe. And Indian rugs and blonde tortoiseshell.

«GOOD BUSINESS IS THE BEST ART»

«Warhol's death coincided with a boom in the art market, and his work did well at auctions in 1988 and 1989.
However, with the bust in 1990, sales dropped dramatically, and by May 1993, the Warhol market was pronounced
all but dead when 16 paintings came up for auction and only two found buyers. Yet in 1996 Warhol's status
was propelled upwards by a single sale that harked back to his first solo show. In 1962 Irving Blum, a Los Angeles dealer
, had exhibited 32 hand-painted canvases depicting tins of soup, then acquired the entire series for $1000 paying Warhol in ten monthly instalments. Blum held on to the paintings until 1996 when he sold «32 Cambell's Soup Cans» to the Museum of Modern Art in New York for $15 millions. In addition to setting a new benchmark price, the sale signalled Warhol's canonisation»

«Gee, that's great» aurait dit l'autre....

WHY THE WARHOL LEGACY IS SO LONG LASTING

«Great art can be made out of love for religion as well as rebellion against it. But a totally secularized society with contempt for religion sinks into materialism and self absoption and gradually goes slack, without leaving an artistic legacy»

«I JUST READ EVERYTHING»

«Gay men want to show themselves, and to provoque, and they are curious about all the new things-hysterically wanting something different all the time. They are more in touch with new fashion, and even in creating new fashion themselves. Gay men are a rejected minority. So they rebel against convention, and they have a unique sensibility that is more close to that of a woman. They want to affirm themselves and express themselves by their clothes. Or they want to look like a big macho. And they are a lot of my customers, a very big part, and I'm proud of that»
