AVN Media Network, the most prominent overseer of the business, publishes trade publications for the adult entertainment industry and puts on trade shows. Paul Fishbein, chairman of AVN, is entering his 27th year in the business, “and this is the first time I can honestly say the adult business is not recession-proof.”“Everybody I’m talking to says the business is down anywhere from 20 to 30 percent,” he explained. “That’s in line with the rest of the economy. People in the retail sector are down anywhere from 10 to 40 percent.”

"I do not see any relationship that I ever had with Sam as me being taken advantage of. I do not feel like I was ever a victim.... I saw it as a friendship that had crossed the line a couple of times, but I saw it as a friendship," Breedlove said. "When I say cross the line, I don't mean as an unwarranted or unwanted affection. I just didn't see it as something with any potential. ... I saw it as that was the line that we had crossed a couple of times, was 'friends' to 'friends with benefits.' ... I was not pulled into this situation by Sam. I was not unfairly influenced by Sam. I think Sam is a wonderful man.''

Quotes from an interview with Beau Breedlove that appeared in the Oregonian newspaper. The city of Portland is facing a highly-publicized sex scandal because the city's brand new mayor, Sam Adams, who is openly gay, was forced into confessing that he lied about having an affair with Breedlove a couple of years ago. Both say the affair occurred after Breedlove had just turne 18. Adams has publicly apologized for lying and asking Breedlove to lie to the press, but says he will not step down from his position as Mayor even though there is said to be a number of calls for his resignation

PHILOSOPHY FOR THE 21st CENTURY: DECADE

How will historians remember the first decade in the US? People elected the son of an ex president and admired an hotel empire heiress as their biggest celebrity. Until they woke up late and realized the American dream is about meritocracy not plutocracy.

TV WATCHER

Andy Warhol was the first great TV watcher; really talented. I say watcher, but perhaps consumer would be a better word because it was more like a vital, sustaining backdrop for whatever else he was doing – vacuuming, say, in front of a couple of TVs. He watched them in multiples, though not more than four at a time in the bedroom; he wasn't depraved. "When I got my first TV set," he said, "I stopped caring so much about having close relation-ships with other people."If Warhol had lived in the age of Celebrity Big Brother, he'd never have gone out at all, except maybe to appear on it.

“IT'S CALLED GOSSIP AND OF COURSE IT'S AN OBSESSION OF MINE”

But most of all, Barack Obama's presidency marks the ascendancy of a new generation: not his own, but the teenagers and twentysomethings who came out in droves to vote, confounding their sceptical elders and embracing "Yes We Can" as their mantra, their battle cry. They understand too well that they are entering a world of austerity, a world in which they might not be better off than their parents, a world in which individual and collective responsibility will not be contradictory, but complementary. Like them, Obama is sober. He is preparing them for "Yes We Can" to turn to "No, We Can't"; he is telling them that the euphoria, the hoopla, the hype, and maybe even the hope will fade all too soon. He is telling them that theirs will be a generation that will be wise before its time.

"Our challenges may be new. The instruments with which we meet them may be new. But those values upon which our success depends -- honest and hard work, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriotism -- these things are old. These things are true. "To all other peoples and governments who are watching today, from the grandest capitals to the small village where my father was born: know that America is a friend of each nation and every man, woman, and child who seeks a future of peace and dignity, and that we are ready to lead once more."

"This is the meaning of our liberty and our creed -- why men and women and children of every race and every faith can join in celebration across this magnificent mall, and why a man whose father less than sixty years ago might not have been served at a local restaurant can now stand before you to take a most sacred oath."

Scientists have found that the pleasure women get from making love is directly linked to the size of their partner’s bank balance. They found that the wealthier a man is, the more frequently his partner has orgasms.“Women’s orgasm frequency increases with the income of their partner,” said Dr Thomas Pollet, the Newcastle University psychologist behind the research.
He believes the phenomenon is an “evolutionary adaptation” that is hard-wired into women, driving them to select men on the basis of their perceived quality. The study is certain to prove controversial, suggesting that women are inherently programmed to be gold-diggers.However, it fits into a wider body of research known as evolutionary psychology which suggests that both men and women are genetically predisposed to ruthlessly exploit each other to achieve the best chances of survival for their genes.

“I BELIEVE MEDIA IS ART”

Other forces have helped shape a more laissez-faire climate for art writing. Art blogs have created a new, largely unedited, admirably "unprofessional"—hence, democratic—venue for people to speak their minds, gossip, or theorize about art.
..And then there are the critical writings of artists themselves. These have ranged over the decades from the prickly formalist criticism of Donald Judd to the wacky manifestos of Ad Reinhardt to Agnes Martin's poetic texts. Writing was also important for two artists whose work has set the parameters for many contemporary artists: Andy Warhol and Robert Smithson. Warhol's obsessive cataloging in the diaries and his genre-bending and sleight-of-hand banalities in The Philosophy of Andy Warhol (1975) feel intimately linked to Kraus's writing, as well as to Wayne Koestenbaum's Hotel Theory (2007) and Andy Warhol (2001) biography for the Penguin Lives series, and to the novel Reena Spaulings (2005) by the artist-collective Bernadette Corporation.

«Went down to the Paradise Garage for Keith Haring party and there were kids outside selling tickets to it, although it was a free party. John Sex performed. Madonna didn't start until so late that I only heard the beginning. And that kid Bobby who lives with Madonna was there, the one I got a job for in Paul's movie».

WARHOLIAN QUOTE OF THE DAY

«A fashionable milieu is one in which everybody's opinion is made up of the opinion of all the others. Has everybody a different opinion? Then it is a literary milieu.»

PHILOSOPHY FOR THE 21st CENTURY: LOVE

Before 40 body is beauty. After 40 love is beauty.

«MY FAVORITE THING TO BUY IS UNDERWEAR»

“I'M A DEEPLY SUPERFICIAL PERSON”

Red Carpet Suicide is extremely entertaining. Yes, it is bitchy (surprise!) but without a doubt, Perez has a vicious laptop finger on the zeitgeist of what stardom is about today. (Michael Musto, the legendary Village Voice scribe says of Perez, “He’s the new me!”) The chapter titles alone made me laugh: “Date up the Right Way” (Perez explains the “career” of Kim Kardashian, which was really quite helpful to me) … "No Moment Is Too Precious to Whore Out” … "Pretend to Give Back” … ”Have a Sexy Gay Hookup” (Perez didn’t specify, but this only works for the girls. Gay male stars are still the big taboo – ask the brave and divine Rupert Everett!) … "Celebrities Who Tip off the Paparazzi” … and “People Who Shouldn’t Procreate.”

JOAN COLLINS

«Watched Dynasty. Joan Collins is so good. And they took the bandages off the fairy son's face, and it's so funny, it's like the men are now doing all the old Bette Davis and Joan Crawford things-like when you «remove the bandages».

MODELING FOR 15 MINUTES OF FAME

“MORE THAN ANYTHING PEOPLE JUST WANT STARS»

Madonna's Sticky and Sweet show was the highest-earning tour of 2008, taking $281.6m (£193m) worldwide, according to music trade publication Pollstar. The lavish show, based around her Hard Candy album, featured a Ukrainian gypsy band, a vintage racing car and a "virtual" duet with Justin Timberlake. It also became the eighth highest-grossing tour of all time in North America, Pollstar said. Celine Dion's gigs were 2008's second-biggest earner, taking $236.6m (£162m). The Canadian balladeer's Taking Chances show visited 24 countries - compared to Madonna's 17 - and marked her first world tour for eight years.

Celebrity gossip is the new weather talk.

ART & RELIGION

«SHOPPING IS MORE AMERICAN THAN THINKING»

Since the election, several spaces at Berkeley's Ashby BART Station flea market, for example, are filled with Obama earrings, clocks, framed pictures of the first family-to-be and the ubiquitous commemorative ceramic plates. The official online inauguration store - not to be confused with the Obama campaign store - opened Thursday with designer T-shirts and totes from Zac Posen, Tory Burch, Alexander Wang and others in addition to the usual commemorative buttons, coins, photos and cuff links. The phenomenon has gone global. In France, a businessman has created bubble-gum-flavored Obama soda in a red and blue can emblazoned with the "Yes We Can" motto. And the Times of London recently reported that an inflatable Nativity scene featuring the Obama family was a holiday best-seller in Naples, Italy.

“BEAUTY IS A SIGN OF INTELLIGENCE"

WARHOLIAN QUOTE OF THE DAY

«But the answer to how to live is to stop thinking about it. And just to live. But you're doing that anyway. However you intellectualise it, you still just live.»

-Damien Hirst

JANE FONDA

«Harper & Row called me at work and said that Jane Fonda had sent a turn-down for our request to use her picture in the «America» book. I just couldn't believe it. What nerve! I mean just wait the next time she calls up and want something for free It's just going to be no».

PHILOSOPHY FOR THE 21st CENTURY: TIME

Why don't they teach at school that time is the only thing you could never get back if you waste it. It would be a lot better than any so called entrepreneurial course.

HEY FAGGOT!

«Walked down to 860 and as we passed the new chic food place on 23rd street a couple of black truck drivers yelled «hey faggots» so that got me down. Especially because truck drivers are usually the ones who're cheerful and recognize me and wave. Maybe these were faggots themselves».

WARHOLIAN QUOTE OF THE DAY

“What I hate most in life are people who are not really the peach of the day but who want to be young and sexy. You can fool nobody. There is a moment when you have to accept that somebody else is younger and fresher and hotter. Life is not a beauty contest.”

-Karl Lagerfeld.

ARCHITECTS AS NEW STARS

You can't throw a blueprint these days without hitting a starchitect.Brad Pitt's appearance on the January 2009 cover of Architectural Digest marks the latest example of a growing number of stars bringing a celebrity halo to architecture - from a Canadian guitar-hero turned estate home-builder to a fashion giant trying his hand at villa design.Brad Pitt knows the travails of trying to foster socially responsible consumerism. When the actor had to choose a scent for his new line of environmentally friendly body wash for Kiehl's, he ran into a problem: "Not much biodegrades," he said. "There were only three scents to choose from. I chose aloe." It's all part of a zeitgeist in which a tree falling in the forest doesn't make a sound unless it lands on a public figure. "In our celebrity-obsessed culture, people are often willing to pay top-dollar for items with (stars') names attached to them," says Patricia Leavy, a professor of sociology at Stonehill College in Massachusetts. "This is another form of celebrity branding."
