Twenty- and 30-somethings falling in and out of love. Aging boomers growing out of and into their clothes. All part of a demographic formula that has kept People prospering while so many publications are reeling in these hard times. Most celebrity coverage skews young, but People has attained something unusual, attracting the young (18- to-34-year-olds are its biggest constituency, 38 percent of readership) while holding on to aging boomers (45 to 59 are second, 28 percent of readership).“We need to satisfy both,” Mr. Hackett said. There’s a good economic reason. “Compared to most, boomers remain economically sound,” he said. And so, People is having a boomer year: there have been 10 covers featuring boomers in the first five months of 2009, compared with 11 in all for 2007.While circulation at most celebrity magazines was down in the second half of 2008 — In Touch Weekly (down 29 percent, to 899,000); Life & Style Weekly (down 31 percent, to 472,000); Us Weekly ( down 1.3 percent, to 1.9 million) — People grew 2 percent to 3.7 million. The latest 2009 figures show the magazine’s readership up 1.2 percent.

«I DON'T THINK THERE'S ANY PLACE IN THE WORLD LIKE NEW YORK CITY AS FAR AS STREET LIFE GOES»

«MORE THAN ANYTHING PEOPLE JUST WANT STARS»

Readers of celebrity gossip magazines primarily women seem to cycle through excitable idealisation of celebrity lives, which leads to self-loathing, which leads to resentment, which leads to an ugly thirst for stories about celebrity suffering.(Marina) Hyde suspects this is partly because actresses lie about what fantastic, happy mothers they are. "You always hear people like Catherine Zeta Jones saying `I get up in the night when the baby cries and I make all the food myself and I love ironing their clothes'. It's just not true. It's physically impossible to do all that and make two major motion pictures every year. Most people find it hard enough to hold down any sort of normal job."And they always make out that they look glamorous all the time and I think it's actually really unsisterly. I'd be tempted to say `God, it's a bloody nightmare! No, the nanny does everything', but they need to be someone who brings in $10 million a movie, someone who's an earth mother, someone who adores the simple things in live these extraordinary confections.

«I LIKE EVERYBODY'S ART»

Artwork by Rosemarie Trockel

PAINTERS PAINTING

A studious film of the kind they don't make any more. In the early 70s, Emile de Antonio interrogated anybody who was anybody in the New York art world - from Robert Rauschenberg to dealer Leo Castelli - on what abstract art means. Everyone is prepared to take De Antonio's questions with total seriousness; a long way from the studied irony you'd expect if you asked the same thing today. As a result, De Antonio has put together a concise study of a postwar period when American painting eclipsed all comers, while helping to establish a chronology and a context for abstraction's evolution - from action painting to colour field, and so on.

«I asked Anita how the really glamourous women went to bed with men, what did they do, and she said the only one she really knew about was somebody out in Hollywood who, when the moment would come, would kneel down on the floor and pray to God to forgive her and then he guys would get turn off and ashamed of themselves and they'd give her jewels.

PHILOSOPHY FOR THE 21st CENTURY: BEAUTY

Male beauty peak at 27. Female beauty at 32.

WOMEN IN REVOLT

Like all new movements, women's lib spawned a spectrum of philosophies from the bleak nihilism of "all men are rapists", to the shop floor battles for equal recognition for work of equal value. As the most cursory of glances at the latest pay and promotion statistics will confirm, the gender playing field is far from level even now. But, somewhere along the way, came a generation that believed feminism was just so yesterday. The freedom the new girls craved was the chance to behave just as badly as boys; not the battle for the political high ground so much as one for the lowest common denominator. At the tacky end was drinking the lads under the table and on to the bed. At the other, Spice Girls power - the wherewithal to spend the cost of two flights to New York on the kind of handbag that screams loadsamoney, little taste. Then came wholesale raunchification - not this time among ladettes who were generally strangers to joined-up thinking, but American college girls who made the personal graphically pornographic. This might be entirely their business but for the fact that they, and sites like Jezebel, chose to employ a feminist label for their wholly hedonistic lifestyles.

«IT'S CALLED GOSSIP AND OF COURSE IT'S AN OBSESSION OF MINE»

In a blog written for GlobalGrind.com, republished by The Huffington Post, Russell Simmons explains his deep contempt with the fact that the California Supreme Court has decided to uphold Proposition 8. Simmons is not only bothered by the outcome of this, but he is also furious with how the civil rights of oppressed individuals have been either granted or denied based on the outcome of votes placed in a ballot box. Simmons explains: “If President Johnson had to take a vote, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 would not have passed. If Congress took a vote in 1920, women may still not have the right to vote today. And if President Lincoln went to the polls, blacks would definitely have endured many more years of slavery. We trusted our government to make the right decision and protect the minority, and yesterday we, as a nation, failed.”Simmons then goes on to challenge those within the African American community who are opposed to gay rights. “As an African-American, I urge my own people to take a deep look at our own struggles and not wish them upon anyone else. Simply, civil rights for all is about being connected as humans, united, tolerant, loving and brave.”

«I JUST READ EVERYTHING»

Education must strengthen and discipline the process of visual attention. Today's young have a modest, flexible, chameleonlike ability to handle or deflect the overwhelming pressure of sensory stimuli, but perhaps at a cost to their sense of personal identity. They lack the foolish, belligerent confidence of my own generation, with its egomaniacal quest for the individual voice. In this age dominated by science and technology, the humanities curriculum should be a dynamic fusion of literature, art, and intellectual history. Because most of my career has been spent at arts colleges, I have been able to experiment with a wide range of images in the classroom. The slide lecture, with its integration of word and picture, is an ideal format for engaging students who are citizens of the media age. Discourse on art works should be open to all humanities faculty. No specialist "owns" the history of art, which ultimately belongs to the general audience.

The ultimate king of porn, Ron Jeremy, now thinks about a girl in his life after tasting around 4000 women under ‘ lights, camera and action ‘He now feels that love is the only factor which could turn his mind from his X rated profession which could be a disgusting thing for many people around. "Sex is a job. Don’t get me wrong, adult entertainment is a GREAT job which I still absolutely love," quoted by Ron according to Sun." I can’t think of anything better than perhaps becoming a rock star. I don’t get bored of it and I’m good at what I do.” Added by him "But sure, I want a family eventually. Of course I do. I will give up porn when the time is right." He concluded. Now Ron made his way to mainstream cinema with his new role in “one-eyed monster” and become one the very few pornstars who entered into mainstream. He said: "I’d love to be in a film with Paris Hilton, Pamela Anderson and Lindsay Lohan. That would be amazing. A dream," he said.

SUSAN BOYLE & ANDY WARHOL'S BRILLO PADS BOXES!

Mr. Young said she has potential appeal for brands that are judged by appearance rather than content. "When we first saw her, we thought she shouldn't be up there. Then we heard her singing, and we overcame our prejudices. There's an element of surprise and a hidden talent that would be right for brands with an ugly exterior."

Here are a few possibilities:

Omo. The no-frills washing powder could espouse Susan's homely values. It's not fancy, but it outperforms the competition.

Asda's value products. The Walmart-owned supermarket chain, another honest, low-glamour brand, has recently shunned celebrities in its ads but could make an exception for the ultimate anti-celebrity.

Brillo pads. Mr. Arnold provides the strategy: "These things may not look sexy, but when they get to work, boy do they shine." There's good synergy, too, between the product and Ms. Boyle's coiffure.

In his hour-long documentary, Andy Warhol: Back in China, Makos also managed to climb the section of The Great Wall again to find the same graffiti he spotted with Warhol three decades ago."You see how China has transformed and yet remained the same," Makos said. "Transformation" also proved to be the term Makos used most on his latest trip to China. He spoke highly of the cultural atmosphere in the country, with a vibrancy and exuberance that Warhol would have approved of, compared with the scene in 1982 when there were basically "no lipstick, pop music, neon lights and nightclubs"."Beijing today has the same vital spirit as New York had in the 1970s", he said. "Young people here are very open minded ready to experiment in the arts, compared with the dominance of the traditional arts back in the 1980s," he said.

WASHINGTON, D.C.— The Obamas are revamping the White House art collection, and to make room for modern works by African-American, Asian, Hispanic, and female artists, they’ll be doing away with many of 19th-century still lifes, pastorals, and portraits that are currently on view. The art world is paying close attention to the process, as the Obamas’ decisions could affect the markets for chosen works and artists. Last week the First Couple installed seven pieces on loan from the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in their private residence, including ones by African-American abstract artist Alma Thomas. The National Gallery of Art has also loaned the family works this year, by Jasper Johns, Richard Diebenkorn, and Edward Ruscha, as well as Robert Rauschenberg and Louise Nevelson.

There is no doubt that any piece of art by legendary pop artist Keith Haring would go for thousands of dollars. But in my mind, I think that would equate to a larger than life wall sized canvas. However, given that I know little about the cost/value of art, I can see how I could be completely mistaken. And don't get me wrong - being a huge Keith Haring fan, I have purchased whatever I could afford that had his artwork all over it. Last week at the Phillips de Pury's Auction, Keith Haring's 22 year old wooden skateboard that he drew on with magic marker sold for $16,250

Next week, Abu Dhabi is holding a ceremony to mark the start of construction of the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the vast new museum designed by French architect Jean Nouvel that will be one of the cornerstones of the Saadiyat Island cultural project. The five cultural institutions planned for the island, including a Guggenheim, are due to start opening from 2014. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi’s ruler, and Nicolas Sarkozy, France’s president, will be at next week’s ceremony and will be able to admire some of the works of art that have been acquired for the future museum, which will be displayed at the Emirates Palace hotel. Intense secrecy has surrounded these first acquisitions but sources in Paris have confirmed that one of the main prizes is Mondrian’s “Composition avec bleu, rouge, jaune et noir” (1922), which sold for €21.7m at the Yves Saint Laurent sale in Paris in February. Other Louvre Abu Dhabi buys are said to include Limoges enamels, Gothic figures and tapestries. Also going to the Gulf is the top lot in the Yves Saint Laurent sale, Matisse’s “Les coucous, tapis bleu et rose” (1911), which made €35.9m. The same sources say it was bought by a member of the Qatari royal family.

GEE, THAT'S...

Andy was an idiot-savant. Money was all he cared for, and it came to him effortlessly while he courted celebrities and the rich. He was cold and ruthless yet gave the impression of great vulnerability. He was the great enabler, the impotent celebrity who made it on sex appeal (or sex repeal, as I called it). He played the primitive in a sophisticated age, and he did not have to try hard at the role. Andy was quite primitive to begin with. His 1976 interview of another tiny terror, Truman Capote—a man who hated the truth more than Bill Clinton—made Warhol’s magazine, a publication on whose masthead I was proud to be the only heterosexual. Fred Hughes, the magazine’s president, and Bob Colacello, its star writer, had a lot of laughs about that.
I hated the freaks and the druggies, but looking back, Andy was an original—however phony his originality. His fame will grow exponentially as we become more and more Warholesque in our admiration of the cheap and the glitzy.

Went to Radio City Music Hall for Madonna concert. And the show was so great. Just so simple and sexy and Madonna is so pretty. Now she's thinner and just so great. And afterwards we went downstairs where there was a private party, the level with the ladies' rooms. And Madonna came down with Jean-Michel-I guess he'd gone backstage. And she was fun. She said she was going to the Palladium and might go to Keith's dinner, and she was so sweet and nice. So we went and drove to Iso on 11th Street and Second and then Madonna did arrive, she came in a truck. And they sat her next to me, and she was just great. They were teasing her about her false eyelashes, saying they were bigger than Louise Nevelson's. And everyone was so thrilled, the waiters were on the floor. She was drawing cocks on Futura's pants.

As Massachusetts celebrated five years of gay marriage this year, Connecticut, Vermont, Maine and Iowa came on board. New Hampshire is on the verge, as is New York, and although the gay marriage ban is likely to be upheld in court in California this week, even former opponents say it can't last. But it is not just marriage. There are two openly lesbian women on the reported short list to fill the forthcoming vacancy on the supreme court. President Obama has appointed more than 30 gay men and lesbians to senior posts within his administration.

Comedian Wanda Sykes, African American and a lesbian, was the guest speaker at the high-profile White House Correspondents Dinner in front of Barack and Michelle Obama earlier this month. And in popular culture, gay singer Adam Lambert came a close second in the American Idol contest last week, in which 100 million viewers voted - only months after former Idol star Clay Aiken came out of the closet. Ellen DeGeneres has not only revived her TV career since her sitcom was cancelled in 1998 after she came out, but she has become a "face of CoverGirl" make-up model. Hollywood's Jodie Foster and Kelly McGillis recently came out after years in the closet, though male stars are noticeably more reluctant.Meanwhile, cable TV channel MSNBC's Rachel Maddow, 36, is a success with her eponymous politics show and a leading voice urging Obama to honour his promise to repeal the ban on openly gay personnel in the military. She hailed not a single tipping point, but "a day-to-day struggle" resulting in enormous progress over the past four decades, based on "more and more people coming out". And then there’s actor Dylan Vox: After a successful career in gay porn under the name “Brad Benton,” he’s managed to find work on the campy cable horror soap “The Lair” and in various independent feature films.
“I think people get hung up on where you came from as opposed to where you’re going,” notes Vox, 30, about his unusual entrée into show business. “Elisabeth Hasselbeck was on ‘Survivor,’ and like it or not, she actually has something to say, and it’s been intriguing for people to watch, but they never would have hired her for ‘The View’ if she hadn’t been on ‘Survivor’ first. The industry wasn’t open to her." For Vox, entering the world of adult entertainment wasn’t originally part of the Atlanta native’s game plan. But in 2001, when Vox was juggling competitive figure-skating alongside studying for an MBA, the prospect seemed much more attractive, not to mention more lucrative, than waiting tables. Falcon Studios, generally considered the MGM of gay adult moviemakers because of their big budgets and glossy production values, happened to be making a film in Colorado, where Vox was attending school and training on the ice.

YOUTH WITHOUT COCKINESS IS NO YOUTH AT ALL

A SUCCESS FROM NOTHING

Andy Warhol proved you could make a success from nothing. All you needed to do was say -- "this is art" -- a painting of a Campbell's soup can -- and if you said it with enough fey authority, it was so. You could take any hustler or addict, dress or undress them and call them underground "superstars." It was a sly counter-culture devolution of old-fashioned stardom, which Warhol himself worshipped. And he did supply us with those words by which we now all live -- "in the future, everybody will be famous for 15 minutes." It's too bad, really that he didn't live to see what the Internet has wrought.

Double X columnist Linda Hirshman, also a contributor to the New York Times and the Washington Post, referred to an hour-long television appearance by Tracie Egan, a Jezebel blogger who goes by the moniker "Slut Machine", and Maureen "Moe" Tkacik, in which the two young women refused to engage with a serious discussion about sexual politics and culture. Shrugging off a question about rape and sexual responsibility, Tkacik casually explained why she didn't report her own date rape to the police. "I had better things to do," she said. "Like drinking more."After the programme, presenter Lizz Winstead explained how shocked she had been by the behaviour of the young women. Writing on her Huffington Post blog, Winstead said: "They do not understand the influence they have over the women who read them, nor do they accept any responsibility as role models for young women who are coming of age searching for lifestyles to emulate."In last week's article for Double X, Hirshman singled out Egan and Tkacik as "a symptom of the weaknesses in the model of perfect egalitarian sexual freedom". The Jezebel website, she argued, is guilty of promoting the belief that modern-day feminism is simply "doing what feels good to you". In doing so, it uses the language of old-style feminism to betray the movement's ideals.

Social psychologists have long agreed that humans evolved with the desire to worship and idolize those believed to be attractive and successful. This tendency gives humans the will to try to mimic success and improve their own lots in life. Evolutionary psychologists also agree that the best targets for gossip are familiar faces, as they help humans to sift through a large group, determine who can be relied upon, and decide whose lives are most important to track. In his book called "Fame Junkies: The Hidden Truths Behind America's Favorite Addiction," author Jake Halpern even mentions studies that say other animal groups admire their own celebrities. He cites one that revealed rhesus monkeys willing to give up their food just to ogle a dominant monkey. Other psychological explanations for celebrity news addiction are bountiful, but frequently occurring beliefs are that it has to do with issues of boredom, loneliness, identity confusion, and a dose of primal attraction.

The online classifieds giant Craigslist will finally close down its erotic ads section after suffering months of pressure from law enforcement. The free "Internet red light district," as it's so poetically known, will reportedly be replaced with a new "adult" section that will be more heavily policed and subject to monetary charges. Should we feel righteous and celebratory, or wonder why the state has to monitor the collective libido? The move comes as a response to demands by a number of attorneys general across the country--including those of Illinois, Connecticut and Missouri--after the tragic killing of the young masseuse Julissa Brissman in a Boston hotel by a deranged 22-year-old medical student called Philip Markoff, who had contacted her through Craigslist.

At least one star hasn't taken offense to Eminem's attacks. Kardashian gets ripped in two songs, but is accepting of the abuse.
In "We Made You," Eminem raps, "Damn, I think Kim Kardashian's a man/She stomped him just 'cause he asked to put his hands/On her massive gluteus maximus again." He makes reference to the reality star's big booty again on the track "3 A.M."
After seeing the video for "We Made You," Kardashian said she was honored."I am a huge Eminem fan and find it flattering that he would rap about me," Kardashian blogged. "He's a bit harsh about some other celebrities, but you just have to let it go and have a sense of humor."

She's so cutting edge and ahead of her time, isn't she? For her upcoming Greatest Hits album or something (honestly, who can keep up?) Madonna adds none other than Lil Wayne to her song "Revolver." This of course comes after 2008's great "Hard Candy" on which hip-hop gone pop stars Pharrell and Chad, Timbaland and Kanye West guest.Despite all their fantastic contributions to a really fun album, we couldn't help but noticing though that Ms. Donna was just a wee bit late (seven years, roughly) to the Timbaland/Neptunes party. (Cue Miranda Priestly. "A dance track with Timbaland? Groundbreaking.")
And now she's duct-taped Lil Wayne, who of course was last year's buzz, onto a Britney leftover.

It's going to be a look-a-like. It's going to be a joke.'"But a couple of hours later it was all over online and then I saw it."She added: "It's the most intimate thing you can do and the whole f**king world is watching it and laughing at you."That's not what I wanted when I was a little girl. It's not what I planned. Yes, him. The most influential person in reality television isn't merely the most galvanizing performer on America's top-rated program. He's not just the highest-paid primetime TV personality and a successful producer in two countries. And he's certainly not, as he described himself during a moment of humility before a recent taping of "American Idol," just "a judge on a bloody talent show." Cowell tops this list because only he knows the answer to the most tantalizing question in reality TV: What will Simon Cowell do next? His contract is up after next season of "Idol," and Cowell, 49, is not shy about his willingness to leave."The idea that for the next five years, I'd be doing exactly what I've been doing for the past five years ... the thought is just too depressing," Cowell says in his trailer before walking over to the "Idol" stage at CBS Television City. "I'd go nuts, bored out of my mind. You have to evolve, you have to change. I like the challenge of launching something new."

It was a post -modern building, the kind with the big columns and there was an old-fashioned lady with her hair up at an old-fashioned switchboard. Mr black had read Popism the night before, he'd done his homework, and he reminded me of Peter Brant, but nicer. There's a new celebrity war raging. Well, a celebrity news war.Us Weekly has launched an offensive against InTouch Weekly, using two full pages of their new issue to rip their rivals' bogus Brangelina gossip over the years.Us reproduced 21 InTouch covers dating back to 2005, then shreds the fake stories one by one, killing its celebrity gossip counterpart over their articles. Some of which are pretty great. At least three wedding reports and five accounts of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie splitting up, with some inventive Jennifer Aniston stories tossed in for good measure, made it into the collage of lies.InTouch fired back: "We are flattered that our competition pays so much attention to InTouch that they were willing to devote a 2-page spread to us."Mmm. They've got a point there, but come on, look at these headlines. After you've blatantly lied 17 times, doesn't the 18th fail to carry the same weight? «POP ART IS FOR EVERYONE»

«I JUST READ EVERYTHING»

It's strange. I think that both "Girls Gone Wild" videos and abstinence-only education classes tell women that what's most valuable about them is their sexuality. Porn has all of this “barely legal” and “virgin porn” stuff, where the most fetishized woman is the virgin. It's the same thing with abstinence-only and the purity pushers: The most revered person in their world is the female virgin. The virginity movement tries to fight against porn, but not really in the ways that you would expect. They spend a lot of time talking about pop culture and TV, not talking about poor conditions for sex workers -- things that actually impact women's lives. Instead, they target consensual sexual encounters between adults and little old ladies selling vibrators at, you know, [sex toy] Tupperware parties. The purity movement needs porn, so they can point at it and say, “ Look, look see all this terrible stuff that is happening!” And then they don't actually do anything about it.

What do you think about the young woman who auctioned off her virginity?

I don't know why we're so surprised by it. This is going to sound terrible, but that's essentially the same thing the abstinence movement is saying: “Hold off until you can auction off your virginity to the person with the biggest ring.” It's really the same thing, only done in a more explicit and economically honest way.

It will be the first marriage for Stoll, a native of Melville, Sask., who turns 27 next month and No.2 for the New Zealander, who hits 40 in September. Hunter's first catwalk down the aisle was at 21 when she said "I do" to wrinkled rocker Rod Stewart, then 45. The pair split nine years and two children later, officially divorcing in 2006.

Western visitors to southern or Middle-Eastern countries are often perplexed, not only by open homosocial affection but also by the presence of a thriving homosexual "underworld". For if two men holding hands in public does not necessarily mean that they are romantically tied, it certainly opens the doors of possibility. In Pakistan, a popular drag queen hosts a TV show tackling serious current issues. Asked by a stunned French reporter whether she was advocating LGBTQ rights, she replied: "Darling, these categories do not apply in my culture." As much as it is hard to imagine a cross-dresser hosting a political show in France, it is easy to notice that for the reporter, visibility equals political statement. Categories are indeed different.

AMERICANS KIDS...NOW!

«I've been reading that all the kids today are really conservative and America's taken this big shift, with all the high school kids clean-cut and dating without sex, and all the college kids trying to get into fraternities and giving up drugs for beer. But then you also read about this really popular rock star who bites the heads off live chickens on stage. The art of the contemporary art boom will for ever be associated with the credit boom. Just as the values of that economic system are now discredited, so too will be the values of the art that went with it. In the future we will no longer have high regard for art that is mass-produced, or dictated over mobile phones to assistants in factory studios. We will be amazed that hedge-fund collectors paid $3 million for framed photographs of Marlboro adverts - works of art by Richard Prince, which were said to be the result of the important new artistic process of “rephotography”.We will not look at the shiny reflective surfaces of Jeff Koons' sculptures (or the immacutely smooth multicoloured surfaces of Murakami's paintings and sculptures) and think that this quality of fabrication makes them important. We will come to regard the art as the baubles of the bubble billionaires.Like all those packaged-up bundles of bad debts, contemporary art had no fundamental value. It was worth just what the market said it was worth.

I am as lovely as a dream in stone;
My breast on which each finds his death in turn
Inspires the poet with a love as lone
As everlasting clay, and as taciturn.
Swan-white of heart, as sphinx no mortal knows,
My throne is in the heaven's azure deep;
I hate all movement that disturbs my pose;
I smile not ever, neither do I weep.

Before my monumental attitudes,
Taken from the proudest plastic arts,
My poets pray in austere studious moods,

For I, to fold enchantment round their hearts,
Have pools of light where beauty flames and dies,
The placid mirrors of my luminous eyes.

Sue Johanson, the grandmother of sexual education in Canada, said it is normal for women to feel this way. The former host of the Sunday Night Sex Show said, “They equate it with how sexy they are. «WASTING MONEY PUTS YOU IN A REAL PARTY MOOD»

Convicted fraudster Bernard Madoff turned his investment firm into his personal “piggy bank,” spending millions in client money to bankroll shopping sprees, real estate purchases and country club memberships for his family and close friends.
Madoff siphoned money from his firm, Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC, to purchase real estate for his sons, hand out loans to his brother and drop $6 million to buy two yachts, according to a bankruptcy court filing by Irving Picard, the trustee liquidating Madoff Securities. For decades “BLMIS was Bernie Madoff and Bernie Madoff was BLIMS, each the alter ego of the other,” Picard said in the filing. Before he confessed to the fraud, not much was known about Madoff, who was described by many as an aloof, Oz-like character. His scheme -- one of the biggest in U.S. history, with losses likely in the tens of billions of dollars -- has remained one of the hardest to untangle.

Losses on guarantees cost Sotheby’s $10 million in one sale last November, and last week, the company off-loaded the risk on the only guaranteed work in its sale – Picasso’s pipe-smoking musketeer – by enlisting an anonymous third party to guarantee a price before the picture was offered for sale.

Education has failed to adjust to the massive transformation in Western culture since the rise of electronic media. The shift from the era of the printed book to that of television, with its immediacy and global reach, was prophesied by Marshall McLuhan in his revolutionary Understanding Media, which at its publication in 1964 spoke with visionary force to my generation of college students in the United States. But those of us who were in love with the dazzling, darting images of TV and movies, as well as with the surging rhythms of new rock music, had been given through public education a firm foundation in the word and the book. Decade by decade since the 1960s, popular culture, with its stunning commercial success, has gained strength until it now no longer is the brash alternative to organized religion or an effete literary establishment: it is the culture for American students, who outside urban centers have little exposure to the fine arts.

WOMEN IN REVOLT

Stephen Marche has a strong hunch that women are closing their legs now that feminism has won them some real-world power. In an article for Esquire, he declares this nothing short of a "disaster for men."If a guy finds that a boner-kill, it's no wonder he isn't getting laid. You might ask: Wasn't it just yesterday that feminist or post-feminist or post-post-feminist females were supposedly slutting it up to the detriment of civil society? That women's looseness was being blamed for limp dicks, "Darwinist dating," male pigs and a return of medieval masculinity? Well, despite the article's headline -- "Where have all the loose women gone?" -- it seems Marche isn't talking about all women, but rather smart women. "Brilliant, funny, and powerful women are retreating from sex as never before," he writes. (Leaving, what, only stupid sluts?)
The only woman he successfully uses to illustrate this thesis isn't a real woman at all -- she's a TV character: "30 Rock's" Liz Lemon, played by Tina Fey. "The most complicated and intelligent woman in television comedy barely ever has sex," he writes.

The event started in February, but came to national attention after the New York Times wrote about it. The police are now promising to keep a close eye on the cummings and goings at the restaurant.“That [Times article] was the first I heard of [Fondle] night,” Captain Kenneth Corey of the 76th Precinct said. “We’re going to determine the legality of it. If they’re outside of it, then we’re going to take action.”South Brooklyn Pizza may be in violation of cabaret license regulations.“It doesn’t bother me,” said Omarr Stewart, who lives in the neighborhood. “I like to think of myself as a progressive.”“To each his own,” added Michael Rosario, who works at a neighboring restaurant.
