«SEX IS MORE EXCITING ON THE SCREEN AND BETWEEN THE PAGES THAN BETWEEN THE SHEETS»

DAY TWO
6 a.m.: A text from another young one. Late 20s with a peroxide blond faux-hawk, blue eyes, and the most perfect bubble butt possible on a white boy. Met him through CL. Our usual: He comes over, gets all coked up, and talks incessantly about Britney Spears. He eventually splays himself on the bed and serves up that perfect butt. I go down on him for what seemed like hours, lovin' every minute of it. (The coke always throws a wrench in the gears of sex.) He texts how much he misses our times together.
11 a.m.: At the Met. Enjoying the usual selection of hot-bodied, dickless Greek and Roman statuary.
11:35 a.m.: A security guard, an Italian Bear type, gives me a look and quick grab of his crotch. I stand there and let him go through the whole ceremony; stopping, looking back, eye contact, another series of crotch grabs — each more suggestive than the last. I give him a nod. He walks off. I know to follow.
11:45 a.m.: He has access to the employee elevator and we try a few men's rooms he knows of that are closed to the masses. We end up at urinals right off the Modern Art wing, stroking. He finally bends over and starts blowing me, but someone comes in and we have to go. I tell him I'm off to have lunch.
12:58 p.m.: Near the cafeteria, he finds me again. Tells me he has a fifteen-minute break and knows where we can go. Through the American wing and up to a floor of all offices. We find the men's room, and go into a stall. He crawls up on the seat and gives me some awesome head until he comes in his pants. It was good, but I needed longer to get off.

FROM A CAMPBELL SOUP CAN TO LADY GAGA

“I spent every dollar I made on my music, my art. Every dollar,” GaGa insisted. “I don’t wait to get budgets from the label. I do it on my own. I don’t give a f**k about money. Unless it’s on the stage, I don’t want it in my hand.
“Pop music is commercial art the way Andy Warhol’s Campbell’s soup cans were commercial art. I don’t know why everyone is so against pop music. I love a good chorus – sue me. It’s that f***ing simple.

«POP ART IS FOR EVERYONE»

«Andy was the pope of Pop and Reagan was the first pop president. A movie star as president was a Warhol fantasy come true. It wasn’t that Andy was politically aligned with Ronald Reagan, but the idea of someone who came out of a Hollywood star system and was “created” by Warner Brothers becoming president is very Warholian. They also both came from very poor families in obscure places in the middle of America. Both were mama’s boys. Their mothers’ lives both revolved entirely around their church (in Andy’s case it was the Eastern Rite Catholic Church and Reagan’s it was the Disciples of Christ). And both seemed so nice and harmless in a way. I think they were both underestimated. »

«I JUST READ EVERYTHING»

Jobs, and the preparation of students for them, should be front and center in the thinking of educators. The idea that college is a contemplative realm of humanistic inquiry, removed from vulgar material needs, is nonsense. The humanities have been gutted by four decades of pretentious postmodernist theory and insular identity politics. They bear little relationship to the liberal arts of broad perspective and profound erudition that I was lucky enough to experience in college in the 1960s.
Having taught in art schools for most of my four decades in the classroom, I am used to having students who work with their hands—ceramicists, weavers, woodworkers, metal smiths, jazz drummers. There is a calm, centered, Zen-like engagement with the physical world in their lives. In contrast, I see glib, cynical, neurotic elite-school graduates roiling everywhere in journalism and the media. They have been ill-served by their trendy, word-centered educations.

NEW YORK— Perhaps the could be faulted for not being sufficiently engaged with trends in new media art, but when it comes to the institution's own tech the Modern has tried to live up to its name — most recently with the introduction of an iPhone app. MoMA is now offering a free download that allows access to 32,000 works, a dictionary of art terms, artist bios, an event calendar, audio tours, and more.

WOMEN IN REVOLT

As a proud lesbian feminist I have campaigned for years against the beauty industry and cosmetic surgery. I have never worn makeup, except once, as an experiment for these pages, and for years I even refused to wear a bra – until I had to dress up in vaguely smart clothing occasionally for work. But we all have an achilles heel, and mine is facial hair. I hate it, both on myself and other women. I have a particular terror of fuzz appearing on my face, and always carry one lone item of beauty equipment: tweezers. Luckily, I am not particularly afflicted, although in recent years I have noticed one long black hair that sprouts from my left cheek, another under my chin, and a few barely noticeable ones above my lip. The second they appear they are instantly torn asunder. My fear of the fuzz is hardly unusual. Even in the thick of the late 1970s women's movement, I remember a close friend – a fellow lesbian and hard-line feminist – confessing, "I'm so glad I discovered electrolysis before feminism!"

PICASSO

In the years after the Second World War, for instance, Picasso was so wealthy that he used to haul around a red-leather Hermès trunk stuffed full of millions of francs so that he would never be short of the cash to “buy a packet of cigarettes”.
He was frequently photographed leading a sun-soaked, playboy lifestyle on the white-sandy beaches of the Riviera (a part of the world which, incidentally, had never been a summertime holiday destination until Picasso and his smart friends started staying there during the hottest months of the year during the Twenties). In other words: by the final decades of his life, Picasso had become a brand. His name had developed into shorthand for ceaselessly inventive artistic genius, understood by people who would not recognise a Picasso in a gallery.

Also in 1982, Bischofberger took Basquiat to meet Andy Warhol in his studio. Basquiat asked his dealer to take a Polaroid picture of him together with Warhol. Two hours later, he returned to Warhol’s studio bearing a still-wet oil painting: his interpretation of the double portrait. Said an impressed Warhol, "He works faster than I do!" The two would go on to form one of the most famous (and financially rewarding) partnerships in contemporary art, collaborating on paintings that filled two exhibitions — a relationship that Basquiat would soon end, however, due to some initial negative reviews. Eight years, 1,000 canvases and 2,000 drawings after his first exhibition, Jean Michel Basquiat died in his loft of an overdose. He was twenty-seven years old. Death rounded out the myth: the young, presumed genius, hyped and idolized but apparently always misunderstood, was dead before he could truly prove his talent.

DYNASTY

WOMEN IN REVOLT

Preliminary findings from Teela Sanders and Kate Hardy of the University of Leeds show that nearly 90 percent of women who perform lap dances (a much raunchier affair than in the states) had completed at least one higher education course and 25 percent had undergrad degrees. Putting some weight behind the stereotype, they found that 14 percent were stripping to help pay their way through school. The Sun reports that "most said flexibility was the main attraction of the job" (ha).
The most controversial finding is that they feel empowered by their work. Sanders, whose research often focuses on sex work, says: "These young women do not buy the line that they are being exploited, because they are the ones making the money out of a three-minute dance and a bit of a chat." Ooh, them's fighting words! Let the inter-generational feminist debate begin once again.

PARIS — Top US art dealer Larry Gagosian, known for his eye for contemporary and modern works, is to open his first gallery in Paris in a new sign that the recently flagging Paris market is at last picking up. The influential 65-year-old, who has opened eight art galleries worldwide since setting up his first in Los Angeles in 1979, is to open a swish Paris dealership October 20 just off the prestigious Champs-Elysees avenue. Paris, said Serena Cattaneo, co-manager of the new gallery, "is a historic art capital"."It was an old dream of his and on top of that there's been a change in Paris. The city is on the way to re-establishing its place on the international art circuit thanks to its great museum shows," she told AFP. "Artists love coming to Paris and showing their works."Gagosian currently has four galleries in the United States, three of them in New York, one in Los Angeles, two in London, one in Rome and one in Greece, which opened last year.

Entitled “RSTW” (Rauschenberg, Ruscha, Serra, Twombley, Warhol, & Wool) and curated by Anne Baldassari, president of the Foundation Picasso, the exhibition explores not only American postwar art, but also the “collector behind the art dealer”, according to Tourism Development & Investment Company, the organizer of the show. “This ‘contemporary collection’ parallels the idea of Abu Dhabi as a place of accelerated progress, raising debates about the definition of contemporary in a space which is always in the process of becoming new.”

DAVID BAILEY

Bailey has collected art, especially tribal masks, since the early 60s. He takes me round the art in his house. "Not many photographs here because it's too damp," he says, as we breeze through the living room's display of masks. "You're the first journalist I've let in. That's rubbish. That's rubbish. That's good. I got that from New Guinea when I spent four weeks with some cannibals. That's rubbish. That's rubbish. I've got truth-telling Tourette's, you see. That's a lovely mask from Benin. That's rubbish. That's an Arp, that's Irving Penn. That's by my favourite photographer, [Manuel] Bravo."
We wander into a bedroom. "That's a dead bear," he says pointing to the pelt on the bed. "That's a dead tiger. And that," he says, pointing to a doll from the second Austin Powers film, "is little me." Bailey clearly accepts Mike Myers's back-handed tribute. It's time to go. What will you do if the critics give your sculptures a pasting? "I don't mind if people don't like my things. I do it for myself nowadays. It's only a few nutcases who do art for themselves, like Van Gogh. But I'm not going to cut off my ear."

«I LOVE ALLEN'S THINGS...HE'S SUCH A GREAT POET»

Allen Ginsberg, along with Marshall McLuhan and Norman O. Brown, was one of the central figures of my college years in the '60s. He had enormous influence on my intellectual development, and I would be proud to call him my guru. I was introduced to Ginsberg's masterpieces, "Howl" and "Kaddish," by a brilliant teacher, the poet Milton Kessler, whose fierily rabbinic recitations of those bardic lines are emblazoned in my psyche. Ginsberg's hallucinatory imagery, incantatory rhythms and jazz syncopations are the ultimate, operatic expression of 20th century sexual and political radicalism. I raptly studied and treasured the small, black-and-white City Lights Books editions of the two poems as if they were sacred texts from the Jerusalem that was then avant-garde San Francisco.

THE JEWISH ART OF RECOGNIZING ARTISTIC TALENT FIRST

Everything about the Fisher Collection, the tip of the iceberg of a major gift of 1,100 works to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art by the founders of the Gap, signals its importance. The works on view in "Calder to Warhol" are big, expensive, seminal and, for the most part, corporate. They represent a coup for the San Francisco museum. Adding to its impressiveness is the depth of holdings by some of America's most important modern and contemporary artists. Not one Chuck Close but two rooms full. Two rooms of Warhols, early and late. Gerhart Richters of every type the chamelionlike artist has produced. A career survey of works by Philip Guston. An arcade of Calder mobiles dancing overhead.

«I JUST READ EVERYTHING»

Q- Oliver Stone once said that every gay man thinks they're a film critic, and Quentin Crisp said that he went to the movies "incessantly and reverently." Yet, as far as I know there's no particularly deep relationship between cinema and lesbian culture. How would you account for this?

A-I noticed this odd phenomenon while I was still in college. I had a community of response to film with gay men but virtually zero with lesbians. It's partly why my dating life was such a frustrating blank. My theory is that gay men, unlike lesbians, have an innate, hyper-acute visual sense. It's related to what I have speculated to be the genesis of much (but not all) male homosexuality: an artistic gene that ends up isolating sensitive young boys and interfering at a crucial moment with the harsh dynamics of schoolyard male bonding.

«PERSONNALY I LOVED PORNO AND I BOUGHT LOTS OF IT ALL THE TIME"

SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N.J.—The train wrecks that are the cast members of MTV’s reality show “Jersey Shore” have apparently unintentionally helped propel several adult industry companies into the mainstream spotlight.Initally, the 20-something inspired four porn parodies: Taryn It Up Entertainment’s Jersey Shore XXX: A Porn Parody, Zero Tolerance Entertainment’s Official Jersey Shore Parody, Grind House’s Jersey Shore XXX: A Black Parody, and a gay incarnation, Jersey Score, from Jet Set Men. But now, their forays into the world of adult are getting more attention. Just this week, photos of Jenni “JWoww” Farley, Deena Cortese and Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi trying on skimpy costumes at an adult store in Seaside Heights, N.J. were plastered across news websites and celebrity blogs. Snooki and her co-horts were followed by the paparazzi last weekend as they tried on outfits from Coquette and Hustler. Snooki even liked her baseball-themed Hustler costume so much she wore it home … giving photogs an ample view of her home plate as the breeze blew up her short skirt. «THERE SHOULD BE COURSE IN FIRST GRADE ON LOVE»

In an article published on Out magazine's website today, Cintra Wilson introduces us to Alex Beecroft and "Erastes," two straight, married female authors who write dirty stories starring men sticking it to other men. But they aren't doing it for the boys who like boys. These homo bodice rippers are meant for the types of suburban ladies who pick up those paperbacks with Fabio on the cover. The trend has become so popular that most of the major romance novel publishers have caught on and started lines of M/M romances for the demanding public. The phenomenon emerged from "slash fiction," a type of fan fiction that imagines two popular male fantasy or sci-fi characters in a romantic relationship. Think Spock and Kirk exploring each others' bodies rather than some planet in outer space. But just what is it about reading about two guys getting it on that has women so worked up? Wilson explains it as such:Since women are not equal to men in society, a straight romance narrative—the usual machinations that bring a brutish alpha male and a wasp-waisted young female beauty to the point of bodice-ripping penetration—can't deliver the same heady emotional frisson as a "bromance," which slashers and M/M authors alike view as a courtship between equals, which culminates in the emotional jackpot of a true love based on loyalty, trust, caring, and mutual respect.

«OHHH ELIZABETH TAYLOR OHHH SHE'S SO GLAMOROUS» -ANDY WARHOL

In the new book, Furious Love, about the fervent, stormy romance between Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton that has been optioned for film, the lovers have a quarrel about Judaism. In one scene, the joint biography by Sam Kashner, a contributing editor at Vanity Fair, and Nancy Schoenberger, an author, depicts Taylor and Burton having one of their usual, theatrical spats—over who was more “Jewish.”The authors write: Burton had referred to the Welsh as “the Jews of Britain”, a comment on their self-identity as the outsiders of the United Kingdom. [Note: Burton was Welsh]“You’re not Jewish at all,” he told Elizabeth in one of their very public fights, “If there’s any Jew in this family, it’s me!”“I am Jewish,” she answered, “and you can fuck off!”
Taylor, the irreverent and dazzling actress was raised a Christian scientist, but converted to Judaism at age 27. Though some say the decision was motivated by marriage to her third husband, Mike Todd—born Avrom Goldbogen, the grandson of a Polish rabbi, according to Time Magazine—Taylor famously denied it, insisting she had always been interested in Judaism. In her book, Elizabeth Takes Off, Taylor tried to set the record straight, and according to Wikipedia wrote: “[Conversion to Judaism] had absolutely nothing to do with my past marriage to Mike [Todd] or my upcoming marriage to Eddie Fisher, both of whom were Jewish. It was something I had wanted to do for a long time.”

In a recent interview Marc Sorrentino stated, “He’s got what people consider a great body, hence his name ‘The Situation’, so we decided what better way for people to get their own situation.”

Today, researchers have issued an alert to women: Beware of the man who makes much less than you. Also: Beware of the man who makes much more than you. These are signs that he'll cheat, according to a study that finds a link between income disparity and infidelity. Study author Christin Munsch suggests this might have something to do with the masculine ego. "At one end of the spectrum, making less money than a female partner may threaten men's gender identity by calling into question the traditional notion of men as breadwinners," she said. There is also the issue of access: "At the other end of the spectrum, men who make a lot more money than their partners may be in jobs that offer more opportunities for cheating like long work hours, travel, and higher incomes that make cheating easier to conceal."

POST WARHOL PREDICTION: JEWISH MAG: ARE PAKISTAN FLOODS GOOD FOR THE JEWS?

IT'S USELESS TO BE YOUNG WITHOUT BEING BEAUTIFUL AND VICE VERSA....

«I JUST READ EVERYTHING»

Men’s professional sports are a fascination (obsession is more like it) to many millions of men, because they offer extreme competition, performance, and heroics. Women’s professional sports, however skilled and admirable, cannot compare in Promethean drama.Even women prefer watching male teams. Few women follow the sports pages and ESPN, but many enjoy attending live games—featuring male athletes. According to Sports Business Daily, 31 percent of the NFL’s “avid fans” are women.Nyad and the USC study authors demand that television cover women’s sports “fairly and equitably,” but the study never once mentions the word “attendance.” Shouldn’t fan interest in the games drive the media stories? Economist Mark Perry, my colleague at the American Enterprise Institute, looked at the numbers. For the 2009 season, the NBA got 92.3 percent of the total attendance for pro basketball (NBA plus WNBA), while the WNBA got only 7.7 percent of the total attendance (see chart below). But according to the USC study, the WNBA received 22.2 percent of the coverage. Perry’s conclusion: “So women’s pro basketball got a hugely disproportionate share of media coverage. Total attendance at NBA games was 12 times greater than attendance at the WNBA games, but media coverage was only 3.5 times greater for men than for women.”

WOMEN IN REVOLT

What does it take these days to inspire women to self-hate? Not only to self-hate, but to take it to such industrial levels that they are manufacturing their own misogyny? Last week, it took a study by www.ukjobs.net, which interviewed 3,000 men and women, finding that three-quarters of men preferred to work for male bosses; two-thirds of women agreed. Their reasons were that men were more straight talking and reasonable, less bitchy, cliquey and prone to mood swings, and (this one made me laugh) less likely to feel threatened if others were good at their jobs. Yeah, that's what I've noticed about men too – they're so non-competitive.

"The new album is my absolute greatest work I've ever done, and I'm so excited about it," Gaga said of her still-untitled album. "The message, the melodies, the direction, the meaning, what it will mean to my fans and what it will mean to me in my own life — it's utter liberation. I'm on the quest to create the anthem for my generation for the next decade, so that's what I've done."While the singer has frequently worked with producers like RedOne ("Bad Romance" and "Just Dance"), Gaga plans to keep her sound fresh with a line of new producers on the forthcoming project. But she's keeping them a secret, saying, "I will never tell because as soon as I tell, everyone starts working with them.

«I LIKE MONEY ON THE WALL»

The art market always follows the money. These days that means courting new collectors from emerging economic superpowers. Auction houses aren't just wooing them with Warhols. They're also whipping up buzz about art from their native countries. And it's working. The value of pieces from Brazil, Russia, India, and China, the so-called BRIC countries, has skyrocketed in recent years, mirroring each country's economic growth. Auction houses have helped feed the frenzy by extracting BRIC art from their other categories, hosting specialized sales designed to spark the patriotism of the BRIC nouveau riche. Sotheby's (BID) has more than doubled its BRIC-oriented offerings in the past decade. Christie's, which says it has Chinese-speaking staff members at all its auction houses, has also significantly upped its collection. In April, Phillips de Pury held the first auction dedicated exclusively to art from all four BRIC nations, bringing in nearly $11 million. Another BRIC auction is scheduled for next April in London.

«EVERYONE MUST HAVE A FANTASY»

«I LOVE ALL MUSIC. CLASSICAL, COUNTRY, OPERA, EVERYTHING»

Traditionally it is no secret that visual art and sonic art have fused to inspire and create cultural art movements. A few examples are John Cage's influence of chance and electronic music in the Fluxus movement, the experimental rock of the Velvet Underground's influence on Pop art, Phillip Glass and Steve Reich's impact on the Minimalist movement to name a few. The anti-bourgeois, anti-war and anarchistic Dada movement in the early 1900's is the groundwork to abstract art and sound poetry, a starting point for performance art, a prelude to postmodernism, an influence on pop art, a celebration of antiart to be later embraced for anarcho-political uses in the 1960s and the movement that lay the foundation for Surrealism. In this movement Kurt Schwitters developed what he called sound poems and composers such as Erwin Schulhoff, Hans Heusser and Albert Savinio wrote Dada music, while members of Les Six collaborated with members of the Dada movement and had their works performed at Dada gatherings.

«OH, ART IS TOO HARD»

Paul Rusconi: I think fashion is art. The dialogue I am concerned with as an artist has more to do with the art and artists that I've been influenced by. I can't help but be affected by all the art that I've seen. Some paintings and sculptures have had long lasting retinal impressions forever etched in my mind. Warhol's White Mona Lisa paintings, his 'Blue Jackie' series, Sol Le Witt's 'Variations of a Cube' from the 60's... Some references sneak in to my work unconsciously and others are much more direct. I photographed a white Sol Le Witt sculpture from 1967. I was interested in the multitude of whites the sculpture emanated from its lightest areas to its shadows and used many variations of those whites to make the background colors for a series of 'White Kates (Moss)'. I think it's interesting when people call the work 'vapid' and 'empty'. Knowing what is under the surface - both literally and figuratively, I'm comfortable and confident that my job as the author of this work is thought out and complete. I've also used the color of Britney's Spears nail polish and lipstick in the work - so, there you have it...

THE 1980'S

The Brooklyn show features clips from Andy Warhol's TV and copies of Interview magazine (which he founded), showing us that, good or bad, Andy's vision was big and complex. If Marcel Duchamp was the art world's Einstein, Warhol used his formula to make the bomb, and changed the art world forever. This doesn't mean, though, that all the work is good. For example the "black and white ads" series on view at Brooklyn is a return to some of his earlier work. (They are images of newspaper ads for soup, or for "99-cent steaks" or "$24.99 Pumas.") The works are hand-painted, we are often told. Why that would matter is the real question, since Warhol's great works were screened, not painted. Who cares if he painted them? I don't. This series is dry and lacks any energy; I've never liked them, and even in the show they still fall flat. Swiss art dealer Bruno Bischofberger once said that some of the paintings look as if they are waiting for Jean-Michel Basquiat to apply some colorful faces and words, and he's right. I do not subscribe to the view that every late picture is a great picture; in fact, much of the late work is tired, lifeless and mechanical-but the exceptional pieces here are some of Warhol's best.

Men who scored the highest on the narcissism test were more likely to view women as conniving gold diggers, as teases who tempt men with sex and don't deliver, or as seductresses with plans to trick men and "get them under their thumb," Keiller said. "Narcissistic men hold overtly hostile, adversarial ideas about women," Keiller said. While narcissistic men also showed rancor toward gay men, their hostility toward them was no worse than that of other straight men. About the only group that escaped narcissistic men's anger were lesbians, possibly because straight men tend to eroticize them, Keiller said. Jean Twenge, a professor of psychology at San Diego State University and author of "The Narcissism Epidemic: Living in the Age of Entitlement," said the study fits with other research on narcissists.

ATLANTA — A new exhibition opening exclusively in Atlanta explores artist Salvador Dali's late work, including several major pieces that haven't been seen in the U.S. in half a century.Dali is best known as a surrealist, his melting watches an iconic image of that movement. But after about 10 years, his relationship with that group grew strained in the late 1930s for a variety reasons both artistic and political. "Salvador Dali: The Late Work," opening at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta on Saturday, focuses on the period from 1940 to 1983."It's become a really interesting area for investigation because you have Dali's career which spans almost all of the 20th century, but historically people have really only looked at the 1930s," said exhibition curator Elliott King. "It was almost like he died in 1940."

YOUTH WITHOUT COCKINESS IS NO YOUTH AT ALL

JULIAN SCHNABEL NEW MOVIE

The trailer for Julian Schnabel’s Miral is out and it is great, great stuff. The story concerns a young Palestinian girl who becomes invested in political activism after she is awoken to the struggle of her people. The film addresses love, violence, and a daughter torn between her father's wishes and her newfound calling to fight for justice. It looks gorgeously shot and the music in the trailer is excellent.

GERARD MALANGA

By the time Gerard Malanga arrived at Andy Warhol's studio in 1963--accepting a job for $1.25 an hour to help with Warhol's large-scale silk-screen paintings--the 20-year-old was already an accomplished poet. By his own account, he had been encouraged by poets such as Daisy Aldan and W.H. Auden (the latter told Malanga he was the best American poet under 25 writing today), been "robbed" of a poetry award in a competition at Mount Holyoke College, and was studying with the poet Willard Maas at Wagner College on Staten Island.Since Malanga had experience working in a screen-printing shop, he decided to make some money on the side at the nascent Factory. Soon, his work evolved from printing and cleaning screens to pulling newspaper images of car crashes and other disasters--the source material for some of Warhol's best-known paintings of the period--to collaborating with Warhol as he experimented with his new movie camera, a 16-millimeter silent Bolex. As Warhol's Factory became a social hub as well as the site of production for the artist's paintings, its focus shifted from paintings to film, and the people who inhabited the studio became the subjects of hundreds of films. Malanga then became a filmmaker. From 1964 to 1966, Warhol and Malanga shot 472 Screen Tests.

«Women are sex objects, but that’s only a part of who they are. If women weren’t sex objects, then we’d never have a second generation. It’s that interaction between the two sexes that makes the world go 'round. It is the center of civilization. It’s why women wear lipstick. And it’s playing a game of semantics to take the notion that women are objects of desire, which they are, and to then infer that that is dehumanizing to them. Clearly it isn’t. Quite the contrary, it’s the essence of being human. It’s the attraction between the sexes. It’s the celebration of that sexuality. And I think we need more of that, to be honest with you. The notion that images of that kind are considered obscene while images of war and maiming and killing aren’t indicates how sick we are. That too is a reflection of our puritanical attitude towards sexuality. It indicates how sad and confused we are.»

William MacFarland was a product marketing manager for Campbell's at the time Andy Warhol turned their soup cans into a now-iconic work of art. In 1964, MacFarland took pen to paper to write this letter to the artist (full transcript below)—sent to 1342 Lexington Avenue, site of the first Factory. In it Warhol is told that MacFarland wishes he could afford one of his paintings, and then informs him that, "I have learned that you like Tomato Soup. Dear Mr. Warhol:

I have followed your career for some time. Your work has evoked a great deal of interest here at Campbell Soup Company for obvious reasons. At one time I had hoped to be able to acquire one of your Campbell Soup label paintings - but I'm afraid you have gotten much too expensive for me.I did want to tell you, however, that we admired your work and I have since learned that you like Tomato Soup. I am taking the liberty of having a couple of cases of our Tomato Soup delivered to you at this address.

«I BELIEVE MEDIA IS ART»

MARK COLVIN: So does the digital age make us all like that to a degree? Are we all now forced to be very public in that way?

STEPHEN FRY: Well, yes and no. It's not, you know, I hear the wings of Andy Warhol's 15 minutes of fame fluttering above us and I'm not sure that it does really mean that. Of course it gives everybody access. It gives everybody a printing press. But then people have had, you know, stencils and roneos and ways of reproducing ideas and if they wanted to go out and push them through everybody's letterbox they always could have done. But how you get read and noticed on the Internet is still a mystery. And in the end technology's always about talent. I'm very lucky in the time, a friend - or certainly a sort of affectionate acquaintance - of the English painter, David Hockney and David over the last three or four months has become unbelievably excited about the iPad and he paints every day using his fingers on the screen of an iPad. And he sends to some of his friends the works that he does. And so most days I get a David Hockney in my inbox. And they are stunningly beautiful. I'll show them to you if you like on my phone. I've got, I carry them with me because they are so lovely. Now the fact is the technology that produces - it's a piece of software called Brushes that you can run on your iPad - and it allows you, you know, to have this immense feel of oils or water colours and extraordinary precision that you can paint and draw with your fingers and colour. It's just marvellous what you can do. But you do have to be David Hockney. It's not good me having that any more than it's any good me having a sound studio with midi channels and keyboards and every voice and sound and software patch for every instrument in the world. It would be hopeless because I just don't have the talent to use it.
