THE JEWISH ART OF RECOGNIZING ARTISTIC TALENT FIRST
Everything about the Fisher Collection, the tip of the iceberg of a major gift of 1,100 works to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art by the founders of the Gap, signals its importance. The works on view in "Calder to Warhol" are big, expensive, seminal and, for the most part, corporate. They represent a coup for the San Francisco museum. Adding to its impressiveness is the depth of holdings by some of America's most important modern and contemporary artists. Not one Chuck Close but two rooms full. Two rooms of Warhols, early and late. Gerhart Richters of every type the chamelionlike artist has produced. A career survey of works by Philip Guston. An arcade of Calder mobiles dancing overhead.
