«I LIKE MONEY ON THE WALL»

The New York spring Impressionist and Modern Art Evening Sale on May 4 totalled an astounding £335.6 million. The sale saw a new world record for the most expensive artwork ever sold at auction with Pablo Picasso’s Nude, Green Leaves and Bust from the Collection of Mrs. Sidney F. Brody, which sold for US$106,482,500 (£70,278,450). The work is from Picasso’s celebrated 1932 series of paintings depicting his muse and mistress Marie-Thérèse Walter.
The May 11 sale of The Michael Crichton Collection of contemporary art was a ‘white glove’ (100 percent sold) sale with a total of US$231,907,000 (£157,696,760). Buyers proved their interest in iconic American works by Andy Warhol, Ed Ruscha and Jasper Johns, among others. The sale was led by Jasper Johns’ Flag which set a new auction record of US$28,642,500 (£19,476,900).
