«I JUST READ EVERYTHING»

So much for the ‘New Man’ concept or the so called ‘metrosexual’, it seems that women are still turned on by a real man. A study published in the journal Psychology of Men and Masculinity (PMM, Division 51 of the American Psychological Association) claims that women see modesty in men as an evolutionary weakness and are therefore attracted to the macho man.The study was based on the reactions of viewers watching footage of actors responding to questions in a job interview scenario. Where men showed any modesty they were less liked, but women showing modesty was not seen as a disadvantage.
The psychologist who led the study, Corinne Moss-Racusin, said “Historically and cross-culturally, men have been stereotyped as more independent and self-focused than women. Women are allowed to be weak while this trait is strongly prohibited in men”.The study claims that modesty in men is seen as something that could adversely affect his earnings so is a poor male character trait. Also, according to a survey by MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, many females still long to be a ‘kept woman’. In the survey 28% of respondents wanted their male partner to bring home the bacon for them to go out shopping.

When Andy Warhol said in 1968 that "everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes," he may have foreshadowed YouTube.
The popular video-sharing website now says it is ready to increase the limit it places on video uploads to 15 minutes — from 10.Joshua Siegel, a YouTube product manager, said in a blog post that increasing the time limit had been the No. 1 requested feature by contributors."We've heard you," he said.

«OH, ART IS TOO HARD»

To fully appreciate world art, one must learn how to respond to religious expression in all its forms. Art began as religion in prehistory. It does not require belief to be moved by a sacred shrine, icon, or scripture. Hence art lovers, even when as citizens they stoutly defend democratic institutions against religious intrusion, should always speak with respect of religion. Conservatives, on the other hand, need to expand their parched and narrow view of culture. Every vibrant civilization welcomes and nurtures the arts. Progressives must start recognizing the spiritual poverty of contemporary secular humanism and reexamine the way that liberalism too often now automatically defines human aspiration and human happiness in reductively economic terms. If conservatives are serious about educational standards, they must support the teaching of art history in primary school--which means conservatives have to get over their phobia about the nude, which has been a symbol of Western art and Western individualism and freedom since the Greeks invented democracy. Without compromise, we are heading for a soulless future. But when set against the vast historical panorama, religion and art--whether in marriage or divorce--can reinvigorate American culture.

Picasso had multiple homes in the south, first with his lover Francoise Gilot (a twentysomething artist), then with Jacqueline Roque, who became his second wife. From the pottery town of Vallauris, where he made his earliest ceramics, he moved in 1955 to a villa in the hills above Cannes, then bought a chateau in Provence in 1958, where he and Jacqueline are now buried. A final villa was bought in 1961 in Mougins, away from the overdeveloped coast. A regular guest of the Picasso household was Richardson, whose three-volume A Life of Picasso is considered the artist's definitive biography. The fourth volume, which starts in 1932-33 and may lead all the way up to the artist's death in 1973, is in progress, says Richardson. So what was Picasso like? ``With his friends, Picasso was the most generous, warmest, the most fun,'' says Richardson, who is tanned and younger-looking than his 86 years. ``He was touchy-feely. I mean, huge hugs.`If there were eight of you having lunch in the studio, you'd watch him work the room -- young girl, older woman, man he'd known forever, kids, even the dogs,'' recalls Richardson. ``He'd get everybody's energy.''

YOUTH WITHOUT COCKINESS IS NO YOUTH AT ALL

«I JUST READ EVERYTHING»

There has always been a strong correlation between religious fundamentalism and lack of education, although saying so leaves you open to charges of "elitism," now the dirtiest of words. The better educated Americans are, the more likely they are to be affiliated with religions that have made room for secular knowledge (even if the latter contradicts some "sacred" book) or adherents to no religion at all. About 45 percent of Americans who have no education beyond high school believe in the literal truth of the Bible, while only 19 percent of college graduates do. Two-thirds of college graduates, but only one-third of high school graduates, believe that living beings have evolved over time. This is the main reason why fundamentalists are supporters of kindergarten-through-college right-wing schools: in those institutions, fundamentalists can control the message. The sneer in Sarah Palin's voice when she calls Barack Obama a "professor" is most evident when she speaks to people who share her enthusiasm for old-time religion and her contempt for education and learning.

A private collector, bidding by telephone, bought Munch’s Expressionist lithograph “Madonna” at the Bonhams July 13 print sale. The 1.3 million pounds ($2 million) price, with fees, was a U.K. auction record for a print and doubled the 500,000-pound low estimate, based on hammer prices, said Bonhams. The Norwegian artist’s quasi-religious portrayal of a seductress was inspired by his mistress, Dagny Juel. After numerous affairs, Juel was shot dead at the age of 33 by a young lover in a hotel in Tbilisi.

HOW TO SOLVE THE PROSTITUTION QUESTION IN THE 21st CENTURY

«I think the girl who's standing on the street corner should pay the guy who comes up to her, because she's hot, right? The guy's not hot, she's hot, right? She's the prostitute, but she's hot and she should pay the person that wants it. She should be on easy street and pay the person for doing it to her, don't you think. I think it should be that way.

ANDY WARHOL: THE FREAKISHLY BRILLIANT PHILOSOPHER AND....FORMER DUMB STUDENT

In fact, males and females appear equally intelligent, on average. But on standardized intelligence tests, more males than females get off-the-chart test scores—in both directions. The greater variance of males on intelligence tests is one of the best-established findings in psychometric literature. More males are mentally deficient, and more are freakishly brilliant. The difference in variation isn't huge, but it is large enough and consistent enough that a fair selection process should produce more boys than girls in a gifted and talented program.

«I JUST READ EVERYTHING»

To be really crude about it, in the United States, if you do anything and say that it's because it's my religious belief, there is some kind of hallowed ground that you cannot touch, because everybody must be able to do what they want in religion. And to make an equally crude generalization of what happens in Europe, they spent some 500 years fighting over religion and trying to get rid of the church in their lives, so the last thing they want is to justify anything in terms of religion. So it's the opposite obsession almost -- to keep religion out of everything. But what really disturbs me about the European context is that the ban is driven almost solely by xenophobic right wingers who I know very well don't give a toss about women's rights. What they're doing is they're hijacking an issue that they know is very emotive and very easy to sell to Europeans who are scared about immigration, Europeans who are scared about the economy, Europeans who don't understand people who look and sound different than them. They've taken advantage of this and done it very well. I'm very disappointed with the left wing and liberals in Europe for not speaking up and saying, the burqa ban has everything to do with women's rights. We are fighting against an ideology that does not believe in women's rights, and we will not allow the right wing to hijack this issue for their own purposes.

«I JUST READ EVERYTHING»

(Journalist Melanie Phillips author of Londonistan)

So what inspired you to write Londonistan?

Phillips: I was just appalled by the fact that, not only had Britain become the key European hub of Islamist extremism and terrorism during the 1990s under the noses of the British authorities, but even after both 9/11 and last year's suicide bombings in London the British political and security establishment is still appeasing Islamist extremism, and remains in a state of denial about the threat to the west. After the London bombings, when home-grown British Muslim boys set out to murder as many of their fellow British citizens as possible, a senior London police officer went on TV and said that the words Islam and terrorism did not go together. If a threat is so badly misunderstood in this way, it will not be defeated.

FP: Can you talk a little bit about the collapse of traditional British identity and of the destructiveness of multiculturalism?

Phillips: This is absolutely a key issue. Multiculturalism has turned Britain's values inside out -- and the root cause of the problem is the deconstruction of Britain's identity. For decades, the British elite has been consumed by loathing of its national identity and values which it decided were racist, authoritarian and generally disagreeable. Much of that was due to our old friend, post-colonial guilt. The elite was therefore vulnerable to the predations of the left, which had signed up to Gramsci's insight that a society could be suborned by replacing its normative values by the mores of those who transgressed them or were on society's margins.

This gave rise to multiculturalism and minority rights, which held that all cultures were equal to each other and which thus provided minorities with an enormous weapon with which to force the majority to give in to their demands. One of the consequences of this was moral inversion, which holds that since minorities are weak they must always be victims of the majority because it is strong. So even when minorities behave badly, it's always the majority's fault. Translate that onto the world stage, and you arrive at the view that even when third world people commit terrorist outrages against the west it must be the west which is to blame. That's why multicultural Britain said, after 9/11, that America 'had it coming to them' -- and why, after the London bombings last July, it said the reason British Muslim boys had blown up the London transit system was because of Britain's support for the US in Iraq.

FP: What is your perspective of the alliance of the Left and radical Islamism?

Phillips: It's remarkable, to put it mildly, that the left -- with its obsessions with issues like gay rights, equality for women and sexual licence -- should have forged an alliance with radical Islamists who preach death to gays, the subjugation of women and the stoning of adulterers. It is an eye-opener to see, on the streets of London, so-called 'progressives' marching shoulder to shoulder with radical Islamists under the metaphorical banner of human rights and the literal banners of Hamas. Both the left and the radical Islamists have put aside their differences because they recognise the value of using each other in pursuit of their common objective, the destruction of western society.

Good news for Philadelphia: Claes Oldenburg is planning to paint the town...well, he has yet to settle on a color. The artist will erect a towering paintbrush sculpture for a new plaza planned by the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. The steel and fiberglass brush, angled upward and reaching the roofline of a nearby academic building, will be accompanied by a dollop of paint on the ground below. "It's not exactly a dab," said Oldenburg at a recent press conference. "It's more like a glob." He's also playing with the idea of illuminating the brush's bristles with LED lights. As for why Oldenburg settled on this particular utensil to join his two other public works in Philadelphia, the iconic "Clothespin" (1976) and "Split Button" (1981), Stephan Salisbury of The Phildelphia Inquirer explains: "What suggested itself here was a paintbrush because a paintbrush is a symbol of a type of art that has kind of gone out of fashion," Oldenburg told [a media gathering]. He contended that no one paints anymore, that artists perform or make objects and installations instead. But fortunately, he added, there are art schools and museums where the idea of the paintbrush remains "something in the minds of many."

«MY FAVORITE THING TO BUY IS UNDERWEAR»

BOB COLACELLO ON DENNIS HOPPER

“Dennis was passionate about art from Day 1,” recalled Bob Colacello, the writer who interviewed him shortly before his death for a story in this month’s issue of Vanity Fair. “He bought Ed Ruscha’s first Standard gas station painting, which is now in Sid Bass’s collection, and one of Andy’s Campbell’s soup cans for $75 in 1962.”In the early 1960’s, Mr. Colacello said, Hopper transformed his house in the Hollywood Hills into a haven for Pop Art. He bought several billboard images and literally wallpapered the house with them. The home was filled with art by Warhol and Rauschenberg, Lichtenstein and David Salle. “He would mix real art with folk art and found art,” Mr. Colacello said. But after his marriage to Brooke Hayward dissolved in 1969, “she got most of the collection in the divorce and has been selling it off piecemeal,” Mr. Colacello said. And that was just his first marriage. It proved tough keeping a collection together through four more. (He was estranged from his fifth wife, Victoria Hopper, when he died.) His estate has consigned what is left to Christie’s, which will be auctioning it off Nov. 10 and 11 in New York. Highlights include a portrait of Hopper that Andy Warhol painted in 1971, which is estimated to bring $800,000 to $1.2 million, and a 1987 Basquiat painting expected to sell for $5 million to $7 million. All the works are estimated to bring $10 million.

«IN THE FUTURE EVERYONE WILL BE FAMOUS FOR 15 MINUTES»

It's too bad Warhol isn't around today. I'd like to read his updates on Twitter or Facebook. I bet we'd see quirky videos, like the one of him eating a hamburger. But that said, I think his quote about 15 minutes is dated and needs to be revised. Celebrity is taking on a whole new dimension in the Internet era. Blogs, posts and status updates allow our thoughts to hang out in cyberspace forever. I'm not sure we're capped at 15 minutes anymore. It's more about how often we get re-tweeted. So with this in mind, I humbly offer the following update to Warhol's classic: In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 140 characters.

Warhol's Sex Life

The second half of the book's title is only marginally more accurate than the first, since interviewees generally prove unwilling or unable to divulge much about the artist's sexual habits, but Wilcock occasionally elicits some tabloid fodder. “Everything is sexual to Andy without the sex act actually taking place,” writer Charles Henri Ford says. “He doesn’t like to take his pants off or for anybody to touch him.” Superstar Ultra Violet offers this rather politically-incorrect comment: “I think a very creative homosexual has a … very necrophilic sort of tendency. Some of his Flowers are very beautiful, but I’ve seen some that are sort of mauve and blue and almost poisonous.” (Bizarrely, Polk states, “I definitely do not think Andy is a fag.) Amaya says that he first heard about Warhol when the artist was working on a “cock book,” in the late 1950s, at the start of Warhol’s career as a fine artist, when he was “going around town drawing everybody’s cock.” He concludes, “[H]e was very ahead of things.”

Hopper also helped Schnabel make his first movie, "Basquiat," by agreeing to play a small role, Swiss art dealer Bruno Bischofberger. "He did me a favor — he was the first actor to sign on to do the movie, so other actors were more comfortable doing it," Schnabel said. Schnabel by this point sat in the show's central gallery, the heart of the show. He has stacked more than 150 photographs by Hopper in rhythmic groupings on angled walls, which in some sections look like film strips and altogether feel like a big photo collage."A typical museum curator might not feel comfortable taking this kind of liberty with the artwork," Deitch said. "It takes an artist like Julian, who really shared Dennis' sensibility."Schnabel sees the grouping as an expansive, inclusive Whitman-esque portrait of America from California to New York — "actors mixed with painters, Hells Angels mixed with Freedom Riders, Martin Luther King mixed with bullfighters."Bringing together the high and low, famous and forgettable, beautiful and ugly, has a Beat feel to it, added Schnabel, who offered that the entire show could have been called "On the Road."

An Amedeo Modigliani sculpture took 43.2 million euros ($53 million) at Christie’s in Paris in June.

«I NEVER READ I JUST LOOK AT PICTURES«

WARHOLIAN QUOTE OF THE DAY

«I love playing bitches. There's a lot of bitch in every woman - a lot in every man. »

-Joan Crawford.

«I JUST READ EVERYTHING»

Today in "hey, didn't we already know that?" is a recent study out of the University of Texas showing that women hit a sexual peak in middle age. But the reason might surprise you. According to the researchers, what's ramping up the libidos of women in their 30s and 40s is their declining fertility. Women of a certain age, says study author David Buss, have a psychological urge to "facilitate conception before the window of opportunity closes."Buss and his team of psychologists surveyed over 800 women and found that women ages 27 to 45 were more likely than either their highly fertile younger sisters (ages 18 to 26) or the menopausal set (over 46) to "have frequent sexual fantasies," "think about sexual activity," or display "a willingness to have casual sex." And from an evolutionary biology standpoint, the researchers argue, that makes sense -- in order to propagate the species, women with declining fertility recognize, consciously or otherwise, that if they want to have children, well, they'd better snap to it. In other words, when your biological clock says jump, you better, uh, run off and have lots of sex.

«POP ART IS FOR EVERYONE»

In a chapter heading in Generation X, (Douglas) Coupland might have declared “Shopping is Not Creating,” but now, 48, he finds himself in agreement with younger artists for whom “to use retail as a mode of creative expression just seems utterly natural.” Besides the clothing and accessories, twenty regular Roots stores across Canada — as well as pop-up shops in Toronto (at 680 Queen Street West) and Vancouver (at 36 Powell Street) operating until July 28 — will carry furniture designs, such as tables with line tower bases and tops of concentric circles inspired by rinks for hockey and curling.Ever since he was a child, Coupland was interested in pop art and the magic of commerce. As a teenager in 1979 visiting New York for the first time, he went to the Fiorucci store, an emporium famous for its colourful array of products. It “blew my mind, like a Leo Castelli gallery had exploded, and these were the fragments that came out of it.”

WARHOLIAN QUOTE OF THE DAY

«Hockey is a sport for white men. Basketball is a sport for black men. Golf is a sport for white men dressed like black pimps.”

– Tiger Woods

YOUTH WITHOUT COCKINESS IS NO YOUTH AT ALL

MEN IS THE NEW DUMB

The sad fact is that we're producing a whole sub-species of men that nobody wants. Employers don't want them. Society doesn't want them. Women don't want them. Or only for their sperm. Which, of course, ensures that the whole damned merry-go-round of boys with no fathers, and few male teachers, and few male role models (except a bunch of preening idiots who are famous for being famous and footballers who are famous for being rubbish) judders miserably on.

«I THINK THE YOUTH OF TODAY ARE TERRIFIC»

«GOOD BUSINESS IS THE BEST ART»

The recovery in the global art market slowed at the latest bellwether auctions of Impressionist and contemporary works where overpriced lots struggled to attract bidding, dealers said. Expectations for two weeks of London sales had been raised by recent auction records for works by Alberto Giacometti, Pablo Picasso and Amedeo Modigliani and reports of brisk business at the Art Basel fair in Switzerland. Sellers pushed up estimates at a time when choosy buyers are now only willing to pay the largest sums for the best trophy works, dealers said.

«ANYONE CAN TAKE A GOOD PICTURE»

Julian Schnabel was an art-superstar before turning his hand to writing, music, film, and architecture. A true renaissance man, Schnabel is now touting his large-format Polaroid photographs in a 100-image exhibition at the NRW-Forum in Düsseldorf, which runs through July 11, and an impressive, new Prestel monograph, which releases June 30.Turning the 20 x 24 Polaroid camera on friends and family over the course of six years, from 2002 to 2008, Schnabel captured fleeting moments in his Manhattan, Montauk, and Brooklyn studios and other locations related to his art and interests. Schnabel’s pals Mickey Rourke, Christopher Walken, and Lou Reed are caught on camera hanging out with the artist, while Takashi Murakami, Max von Sydow, and Dick Cavett are documented dropping by the studio to visit.Impressionistic views of Schnabels’ paintings and sculptures in his various studios and interior shots of his design projects, such as the Gramercy Park Hotel and Palazzo Chupi, as well as a selection of “crazy people” complete the instantaneous, snapshot-like oeuvre. Occasionally marked with paint, Schnabel’s Polaroids offer a behind the scenes look at one of the most motivated creative forces of the past 40 years.

«OH, ART IS TOO HARD»

If you feel a giddy rush of nostalgia at MoMA's new show, then you were probably around (and conscious) in the '60s and '70s. It was a time when current events -- war, social unrest and creeping gentrification -- found their way onto canvas, and folks such as Robert Rauschenberg, Yoko Ono and Robert Mapplethorpe were thinking way out of the box.
Those three and nearly 60 others are represented in "Contemporary Art From the Collection," a show that's, by turns, provocative, poignant and stupefying. From the 150,000 or so objects in MoMA's collection, curators Kathy Halbreich and Christophe Cherix have plucked 130 works dating from the late '60s to the present. Many, either for lack of space or context, have languished in MoMA's storage lockers for years. So it's thrilling to see, say, Kara Walker's 50-foot-long installation with a title nearly as unwieldy: "Gone: An Historical Romance of a Civil War as It Occurred b'tween the Dusky Thighs of One Young Negress and Her Heart," a slyly subversive take on Victorian-era silhouettes, suffused with sex and violence

It appears Enrique Iglesias and Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino have really hit it off. After the cast of MTV's "Jersey Shore" worked their fist-pumping skills in Iglesias' video for "I Like It" (also featuring Pitbull), the Latin hitmaker says he'd totally be open to a collaboration with the ab-tastic "Shore" star."I wouldn't mind it," Iglesias told E! Online about teaming with the Situation for a track. Sorrentino has been branching out from his gym, tanning and laundry duties, dropping a Baltimore club-influenced single called "The Situation Rap," replete with wheezing alarms and Fatman Scoop's amped-up hollers. Iglesias explained that a potential collaboration hinged on the type of track they came up with, but conceded that hooking up with Sorrentino would be a blast.

«EVERYTHING IS BEAUTIFUL»

Artwork BY Robert Mapplethorpe

WARHOLIAN QUOTE OF THE DAY

«I don't think when I make love».

-Brigitte Bardot.

IS WARHOL PORTRAIT OF «JEWS OF THE 20th CENTURY» GOOD FOR THE JEWS?

Thirty years ago, Andy Warhol's "Ten Portraits of Jews of the Twentieth Century" opened in New York to critical derision. The curmudgeonly Hilton Kramer famously chipped away at Warhol's already diminished reputation, which was in free fall until Warhol's death in 1987. At the time, Kramer and others ridiculed Warhol's project as one more example of cynical spuriousness by the artist. This scorn for Warhol's late period work is partially recounted in The New York Times story published only a few weeks ago and taped to one of the exhibition walls at the Oregon Jewish Museum, where Warhol's portrait show of great Jewish individuals has re-emerged. Looking at them now, the 10 portraits don't seem fresh, but they hardly seem the stuff of controversy. They're benign, hollow works. There's no there there. But that was the complaint issued by critics then. These were some of the century's most extraordinary figures, after all -- Sigmund Freud, Gertrude Stein, Golda Meir, Albert Einstein and George Gershwin among them. They deserved gravitas, depth, meaning. But Warhol depicted them with laissez-faire, without too much thought. The portraits are soulless and rightly fuel the perception that they were like a lot of late Warhol works -- about the bottom line. But that's true of much of Warhol's oeuvre, and in retrospect, what's so puzzling about those criticisms at the time. Warhol's genius was conceptual -- it was about the art of commercial marketing and manipulation, crafting public perception. Indeed, Warhol's art was about the craft of meretriciousness, which Damien Hirst has since brilliantly made into his own kind of currency.

«ATHLETES ARE GOING TO BE THE NEW MEDIA STARS»

POST WARHOL PREDICTION: IN THE FUTURE EMERGING NEW ARTISTS WILL SELL THEIR WORK AT WAL MART AND IN SUPERMARKETS

«GOOD BUSINESS IS THE BEST ART»

Andrew Ong, an architectural designer based in New York, has discovered up-and-comers by seeking out art that challenges him. When he began collecting in the 1980s, he coveted sculpture by established minimalist artists Dan Flavin and Donald Judd that he couldn’t afford.Instead, he bought one of four identical stainless-steel sculptures titled “Fisherman Golfer” by a relative unknown named Jeff Koons at a Los Angeles gallery for $15,000 in 1986. In May of this year, another of the sculptures, which ended up in the collection of the late best-selling author Michael Crichton, fetched $434,500 at Christie’s in New York.“I bought that Koons because it was really interesting and new,” Ong, 54, says. “It was the art of my generation.”
Ong has bought early works by Richard Prince and Felix Gonzalez-Torres for a fraction of what they would cost now. Ong’s advice to new collectors: Follow your eyes and ignore what’s fashionable at the moment.“To have a strong feeling about something -- loving or hating it -- that’s what I am looking for,” he says.
