PHILOSOPHY FOR THE 21st CENTURY: POLITICS

As long as the political elites of the West won't understand and publicly acknowledge the danger of a Human Rights concept that is not systematically applied around the world (especially in some muslims countries) they're going to expose themselves to what happened in Switzerland yesterday when people voted for the interdiction of building new minarets.

Details asked, “Why Does Every Woman in America Want to Sleep with Adam Lambert?” in response to his huge, ardent straight-chick fan base. A fan base to whom he is unfailingly sweet, if not adorable. Cagily, Lambert talks about how “pretty” women are, and how, when he is drunk, he will make out with girls. “Yeah I'm gay,” he says. “But I like kissing women sometimes.”Perplexed, I talked to a Toronto-based circuit queen, Baby Couture, who tells me he is often propositioned, while in full drag, by straight women. He finds it ridiculous, and he finds Lambert's equivocations offensive and counter-political. The key to Lambert's appeal? “Adam doesn't pose a threat to teen girls. He is a gay who is never going to give them the time of day … but they can throw themselves at him because of his non-threatening persona.” His female fans are far more threatening than he is; they are sexually depraved and forever throwing bras and panties at him.

In my blog about the film, Milk and about homosexual passion in American film, I noted that for much of middle-aged middle-America, it's not so much about homosexuality per se (a stereotype, an abstraction), so much as it's about homo-SEXUALITY, (the up close and personal, concrete stuff). It's that sexuality, that onscreen kissing stuff, that humping, simulated oral stuff that really gets ‘em riled up.On the AMA show, the dancer simulating going down on an enabling Lambert in that now-notorious number, didn't just push heterosexual, Middle-America's envelope for popular culture, it set it on fire

As Ed Hardy clothing has become more famous, so has Audigier. The designer, who started his career working for 80s brands such as Fiorucci and Naf Naf, is as flamboyant as the sparkling T-shirts and hooded tops that have made him rich. Britney Spears, Pamela Anderson and Michael Jackson were guests at his 50th birthday party last year. In an interview with American GQ last month, Audigier said he was due to appear in a film with rapper 50 Cent and to record an album with Kanye West. He told GQ: "Obama was 200% advertising. I promote myself to sell my brands. Because now I am a kind of celeb. I am in a different world than the fashion industry. I am with Mick Jagger, Michael Jackson, Madonna. “I THINK EVERYONE SHOULD BE BUGGED ALL THE TIME...BUGGED AND PHOTOGRAPHED”

«GOOD BUSINESS IS THE BEST ART»

INSKEEP: how much excitement does a Warhol generate when it comes up for auction?

Ms. THORNTON: Well, you know, every season sees a dozen or so Warhol's and he made about 10,000 works in his lifetime so they're not all the same. And subject matter tends to define what's most coveted. That subject matter then is kind of pinned on to the quality of the screen, the vibrancy of the color, the size of the painting as well as rarity and date.

INSKEEP: I wonder if it is the fame that Warhol generated for himself that underlies the value of the painting now? Because if you're buying this painting as an investment, as an asset, that you want to at least hold its value of not increasing value over several years, you want to make sure the artist is still going to be famous in five or 10 or 15 years and you can feel pretty confident that Warhol will be.

Ms. THORNTON: I think that's absolutely true. I think fame and the media is probably under researched as a topic in art history, and now that we have a global art market, the media can be even more important.

DRESS JUST SLUTTY ENOUGH AND GET A MAN!

Striking the right balance between revealing too much and being too conservative in how much skin is on show has long been a dilemma for women when choosing the right outfit for a night out. However, a study by experts at the University of Leeds has come to the rescue by calculating the exact proportion of the body that should be exposed for optimum allure.
The findings were based on work by four female researchers, who discreetly observed women at one of the city’s biggest nightclubs from a balcony above the dance floor. Using tape recorders hidden in their handbags, the researchers took note of what female clubbers were wearing and how many times they were approached by men asking them to dance. For the purposes of the study, each arm accounted for 10 per cent of the body, each leg for 15 per cent and the torso for 50 per cent.
Women who revealed around 40 per cent of their skin attracted twice as many men as those who covered up.However, those who exposed any more than this also fared worse. Experts believe that showing too much flesh puts men off because it suggests they might be unfaith.

«MORE THAN ANYTHING PEOPLE JUST WANT STARS»

Urban theorist and famed author of The Rise of the Creative Class, Richard Florida, refutes Anderson's position saying that rumours of the death of celebrity due to digital media's saturation Hollywood coverage are much exaggerated. While the proliferation of celebrity sites may have redefined our conception of celebrity, Florida reminds us that "with every new technology - from the rise of film, recorded music, talking pictures, transistor radios, FM radio, cable TV, and now the digital revolution - experts have predicted the death of celebrity. But each advance has generated celebrities bigger than the past. New technologies, as the work of German economist Peter Tschmuck has shown, open up new distribution channels and new markets that give birth to ever bigger stars." Far from burying celebrity, Florida predicts the rise of the super-celebrity: an interent-enabled mega-star of unprecedented global reach.

On Saturday night in Los Angeles, Lady Gaga brought her music and sense of style to the art world when she performed at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art's 30th Anniversary gala. The singer performed the ballad "Speechless," from her forthcoming album The Fame Monster, side by side with dancers from Russia's Bolshoi Ballet.Other A-listers on hand to celebrate the museum's anniversary included Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale, James Franco, and Jessica Biel. According The Wall Street Journal, Gaga played a piano designed by artist Damien Hirst while the dancers wore outfits designed by architect Frank Gehry, fashion designer Miuccia Prada and filmmaker Baz Luhrmann. The performance art piece was conceived by artist Francesco Vezzoli. Gaga wore a silvery gray ball gown with what appeared to be a papier-mâché headpiece.

«I JUST READ EVERYTHING»

There have always been societies that favored boys over girls. Ours may be the first to deliberately throw the gender switch by preferring girls. Little boys are politically incorrect. It begins in elementary schools, which are increasingly female-friendly domains -- boys are there on sufferance. Just to give one example: boys, far more than girls, enjoy rough-and-tumble play. And that means running, chasing, fleeing, playful fighting, and wrestling. It's a very positive behavior, it is a critical part of boys' healthy development. And it is very different from aggression. In rough-and-tumble play, the children enjoy themselves, there is a lot of laughing, and the participants part as friends. In aggression, there is no laughter, children are often hurt, and they part as enemies.Increasingly, parents and teachers are failing to make the distinction. The failure of parents and teachers to respect and understand the distinction poses a serious threat to boys' welfare and normal development. Teachers have always rightly prohibited rowdiness in their classrooms, but they made proper allowances for it on the playground. That is changing. Today, many educators regard the normal play of little boys with disapproval and some ban it outright.

POP ART VS ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM (THE REAL SUBTEXT)

A lot has been written about the relationship of Cage and Cunningham, even more about a mid-century affair between Rauschenberg and Johns, but not much about the quartet. Together, they formed a clique of gay artists that ultimately overthrew the macho posturing of the Abstract Expressionist set that dominated mid-century America. Rivalry between the two camps was fierce: Famously, Rauschenberg once erased a Willem de Kooning drawing. While Jackson Pollock and friends hung out at Cedar Tavern on New York's University Place, the four set up camp at rival Dillon’s Bar down the very same street. At nights, they’d drink, cast the I Ching, and hold bowling tournaments on coin-operated machines. One rainy morning in 1953, Rauschenberg woke up to see Fulton Street empty of traffic. He instructed Cage to peel down the street across 20 feet of paper, with the front tire of his Model A Ford coated in house paint. The resulting artwork, Automobile Tire Print, was party a snide takeoff on the works of Ab-exer Barnett Newman.

«I JUST THINK ENTERTAINMENT IS THE BEST MESSAGE»

As a post-music pop star in the manner of Lady Gaga, music takes a back seat to spectacle. Lambert’s AMA climax wasn’t a commercial for his new album; it was, in the Norman Mailer phrase, an “advertisement for myself.” As he did on Idol, Lambert simultaneously connects himself to pop history (his look, demeanor, and his multiple vocal styles gather together Elvis, Elton, Labelle, Pin-Ups David Bowie, with a dash of Lou Reed circa Transformer and Rock N Roll Animal) and disconnects himself from any earlier tradition.A day after the AMA broadcast, he’s all anyone wants to talk about, and his was the only performance worth considering in multiple ways. Conventional measures of “good” and “bad” went out the window for a few moments. Flouting convention: how rock & roll. Using TV instead of music as a way for a singer to maintain prominence: how pure pop. Nice job, Lambert.

UPDATE: Barbara Walters and Elisabeth Hasselbeck just slammed Lambert on this morning’s The View (Elisabeth: “there was a sexual aggression there”). I repeat: Nice job, Lambert.

WOMEN IN REVOLT

We all know that Hollywood is run by a cabal of homosexuals (or Jews, or liberals, or something), right? Well, apparently, it's not the homosexuals that you think, because it's not gay men – but (cue threatening music, speedy close up and dramatic turn of the head) gay women.

According to the New York Times, America is happier to watch gay women than gay men, citing the inevitable example of Ellen DeGeneres, whereas the American equivalents of, say, Graham Norton are notable by their absence...."People look at gay men . . . and all they see is [anal sex]," is the rather abrupt answer. The temptation to say, "Actually, I think most Americans see someone who can teach him how to have a queer eye and choose a faaaaabulous end table for the living room," is great. But let's not interrupt."They look at Ellen and they don't know what she does with [her wife] Portia," concludes the "openly gay" Dan Savage. Well, I think we all know what Ellen and Portia do: at night they lie next to each other in tightly buttoned-up pyjamas reading books about feminism, hairily and humourlessly. I mean, what else could they do?

NEW YORK — In a remarkably successful auction of post-World War II and contemporary art, 39 paintings, drawings and three-dimensional works sold on Tuesday at Christie’s for $74.15 million. The total nearly matched the middle estimate and only seven lots failed to find takers. The enthusiastic response elicited by works of every possible description was reminiscent of pre-recession days. The auction began with a small “Untitled” sketch on paper board signed by Robert Rauschenberg in 1961. Only about 11.5 by 10 inches, or 29.2 by 26 centimeters, its small size and its support did not make it the kind of work that usually sells easily. Estimated to be worth $100,000 to $150,000 (plus the 25 percent sale charge), it shot up to a stupendous $938,500

I'm going to share a little secret with you about gay men: We're men, real men, just like straight men. We're good at having sex without getting emotionally attached — some of us are a little too good at it — and a single gay man, like a single straight man, rarely passes up a chance to get with someone he's attracted to, even if he wants more than that person can give. About the only thing that gay men are better at than straight men — besides deep-throating — is maintaining friendships with exes, one-night stands, friends-with-benefits, fuck buddies et al.

«POP ART IS FOR EVERYONE»

Murakami's style, called Superflat, is characterized by flat planes of color and graphic images involving a character style derived from anime and manga. Superflat is an artistic style that comments on otaku lifestyle and subculture, as well as consumerism and sexual fetishism.

Like Andy Warhol, Takashi Murakami takes low culture and repackages it, and sells it to the highest bidder in the "high-art" market. Unlike Warhol, Murakami also makes his repacked low culture available to all other markets in the form of paintings, sculptures, videos, T-shirts, key chains, mouse pads, plush dolls, cell phone caddies, and $5,000 limited-edition Louis Vuitton handbags. This is comparable to Claes Oldenburg, who sold his own low art, high art pieces in his own store front in the 1960s. What makes Murakami different is his methods of production, and his work is not in one store front but many, ranging from toy stores, candy aisles, comic book stores, and the French design house of Louis Vuitton. Murakami's style is an amalgam of his Western predecessors, Warhol, Oldenberg and Roy Lichtenstein, as well as Japanese predecessors and contemporaries of anime and manga. He has successfully marketed himself to Western culture and to Japan in the form of Kaikai Kiki and GEISAI.

Rebels are challenging and mysterious

Women don't dig men that are pushovers. They also don't like men that they can see coming a mile away. Contrary to the belief women like men they can read and men that provide them with a sense of security, women actually LOVE to guess! It is challenging for them, and it is one of the elements of the bad boy that keeps them coming back for more!

Rebels are very masculine

This often goes hand-in-hand with being confident, indifferent, exciting, adventurous... etc. Bad boys are often rugged and in-control. That doesn't mean controlling; they just know how to get what they want. They speak clearly and confidently, they look you in the eye, they are passionate about what they believe in... but most importantly, they still know how to treat a lady.

Rebels give women a feeling of power

The illusion of control is often more powerful than control itself. Power within a relationship, power outside of a relationship - it doesn't matter - being with a bad boy, encompassing all of the above traits, gives women an air of strength and togetherness. Essentially the confident, cocky bad boy image rubs off a little bit on her - and she laps it up!

«ATHLETES ARE GOING TO BE THE NEW MEDIA STARS» (ONE OF MY PAST ARTICLE)

"Sex, itself, is not a problem. What really affects an athlete are the drinking and the lack of sleep that sometimes go with sex".

Pelé

— Sex and the sports jock! Nothing better to get the media going. Today, it's almost automatically assumed that athletes (especially professionals ones) can get as much sex as they want. Jason Williams, the ex-NBA star, once said that, basically, the guys in the NBA were no more sex addicts than your average Joe working at IBM; it was just a lot easier for them. As for the ex NBA bad boy, Dennis Rodman, he once commented, "Sex is 50% of the life in the NBA. Money is the other 50%."

Whether one is Black, Latino or white, the groupie experience and the opportunity for easy sex is universal -- if you're a pro athlete. That doesn't necessarily make it a bad thing. Actually, research shows that the more one is at the top of his career -- be it in politics, sports or art -- the more likely it is that person has a very strong sex drive. The great Wilt Chamberlain still holds the record for the most points in one basketball game (100). And, as it has been notoriously reported, he was far from being a eunuch. Picasso, arguably, the greatest artist of the last century, throughout his life, routinely visited brothels and had many, much younger wives. Hollywood, today, is the worldwide capital of entertainment and its citizens are among the richest and the most powerful. Is there somebody out there who still doesn't know that Hollywood is "50% about sex and 50% about money?"Of course, some excesses are not acceptable. No more than certain kinds of behavior. But, there's a big difference between a respectful jock with a healthy sex drive and another athlete who gets into trouble because of sexual harassment.Today, many would like to see successful athletes more politically inclined. Some in the public would like the athletes to take a position and make a social statement à la Muhammad Ali. But it would be good to remember that a social statement is not only in the strict political meaning of the word. As well, we too often forget that declarations about sex could be quite political. When Dennis Rodman said that he didn't care if other people thought he was gay, it was a social statement. When he said that white women want to date black guys because they think the sex is going to be better, it was a social statement against existing political correctness.

Everybody knows groupies are around every stadium and arena. How does it work exactly? In one of my favorite sport books, "Loose Balls," Jason Williams give us an indication: "Next time you watch a pro basketball game, watch us talking during the layout drills. [You can] see us sometimes looking in the stands. What's happening is the players are seeing if they spot a woman they might want to meet. If they do, most of the time, they send a ball boy over. The ball boy goes over says, 'Here's a pass. Meet so and so at the gate after the game.' And, yeah, almost every time, they show up."

OK, so he's probably a bit of a jerk. And his petty sniping in Vanity Fair and countless other outlets has managed to make us actually feel a tad sympathetic to Sarah Palin. But lord help us, we have something for that butch Alaskan hockey stud. He's like the laid-back, chill hottie who just keeps stretching and yawning in your living room, scratching his belly while everyone wonders if he's ever going to leave. But we can't force him to go, and heck, maybe we don't want him to. Every time the self-proclaimed "fuckin' redneck" lobs some incendiary bit of gossip onto the airwaves, Sarah Palin barrels at him, guns blazing. He's gotten under her skin. And he's gotten under ours, too... He's a tease, a provocateur, a punch line. But it seems he might eventually rise to embrace his obvious destiny -- not as the president's son-in-law but as future gay icon.

Well I'm not, I love ladies," Contactmusic quoted the unnamed hairstylist, as telling the Daily Star. However, the former Spice Girl was quick to change her behaviour when she realised her mistake. The hairdresser said: "The sight of her standing there in her bra and knickers was embarrassing, so I told her to get dressed so I could focus. She was then embarrassed too and once she'd got her clothes on, she was quite rude.
He added: "I started to feel really uncomfortable being in her home. Not surprisingly, she never called me back. A week later, I found she'd hired my gay friend."

BUT...IS HE STILL WITH JEN?

The only thing the average British music fan knows about (John) Mayer is that he's had, or is having, an on-again, off-again relationship with Jennifer Aniston. The more informed might know him as a middle-of-the-road singer-songwriter. The average American music fan, by contrast, reckons the 32-year-old is one of the sharpest songwriters and finest guitar players of his generation, that he makes music that connects and unites blues guitar buffs, girls seduced by his lovelorn vulnerability, and guys who feel that listening to a Mayer album is like opening a series of supportive letters from an elder brother. Having convinced a mass audience of his talent, he now faces the problem of proving that he's still talented now that he's supermarket-magazine-cover famous in the States."You can't make music as a famous person," he says. "Famous people make really bad records – so I make music as a musician. I've read people say I was the shit, and I've read people say I am shit. I don't have to prove anything any more – all I have to do is play. Now my motivation is not so that people know my name, it's not so I can make money, it's not so I can meet girls – my motivation is to prove to people that you can buck the trend: that it's not an absolute that if you can be really successful, then you're gonna start sucking."

These people, like Man Ray, were natural sophisticates with an enormous range of interests, from art to music to theatre to politics. Duchamp is quite a different case, and there are questions to be asked. When Duchamp attempted to place a urinal in the 1917 exhibit of the Society of Independent Artists (it was turned down) his act had some shock value. When Man Ray photographed Duchamp in drag as "Rrose Sélavy" -- Eros c'est la vie -- or, Rose Levy -- it was a witty reference to a cross-dressing Jew, it had some double entendre humor. But now the shock seems dated. Third rate Hollywood movies abound in bathroom scenes with an actor pretending to defecate, cross dressing has invaded Halloween, pretending to be a Jew is hardly daring. What remains when shock dies? Duchamp, the chess playing showman, was a mass of contradictions. His outer veneer was of an Greenwich Village aesthete, existing on the bare bones of living conditions. Yet Duchamp first lived off his father's trust fund, then married two substantial heiresses. He made a fetish of not making new works, yet spent his last twenty years in a single effort -- constructing in secrecy Etant Donnés, a female nude reclining, that is, trapped in a bed of leaves. The female is meant to be the Brazilian sculptor Maria Martins, who after their five year love affair rejected him.

PHILOSOPHY FOR THE 21st CENTURY: WOMEN

If the brain is the biggest sex organ for women why do we say smart women must be boring in bed? Of course it's the exact opposite. The smarter the girl is, the better the bitch in bed.

Doctors testing a new anti-depressant found it was useless as a mood brightener - but was unexpectedly effective at boosting the female libido. The accidental discovery mirrors that of Viagra, which was being tested as a heart medicine in the 1990s when the male subjects prescribed it discovered it had a pleasing side effect. However, fibanserin is different in that it works on the brain rather than on the genitals, according to John Thorp, professor of obstetrics and gynaecology at the University of North Carolina. Doctors have long known that in women, the brain is the most important sex organ.

Guessing who the winning bidder was for Andy Warhol’s “200 One Dollar Bills” in a recent Sotheby’s auction is becoming something of a parlor game, with the names of several high-profile investors, including the hedge fund veteran Steven A. Cohen, being bandied about. The 1962 silkscreen painting incited a bidding war among five collectors and ultimately sold for a staggering $43.7 million (including Sotheby’s fees), more than three times its $12 million high estimate.Officials at Sotheby’s and Christie’s said there were buyers from Russia and Asia — parts of the world that were barely represented six months ago — as well as the United States, The New York Times’s Carol Vogel reported. But only the auction house knows for sure who took home the Warhol. Some dealers said it might have been Mr. Cohen, the head of hedge fund SAC Capital who collects contemporary art like Damien Hirst’s famous shark, or Philip Niarchos, the contemporary-art collector who is a member of the Greek shipping family.Others said it was a Russian oligarch like Roman Abramovich, who is said to have bought a $86.3 million Francis Bacon triptych in May 2008.Or maybe even Victor Pinchuk, the Ukrainian billionaire and contemporary art collector.

Whenever you stand back for a panoramic look at the contemporary art world — that confection of bucks, puff and street smarts — you realize afresh that Andy Warhol was the daddy of it all. And that was confirmed yet again at Sotheby’s on Wednesday night, when his 1962 silk-screen painting “200 One Dollar Bills” sold for $43.7 million (including Sotheby’s fees).

«ATHLETES ARE GOING TO BE THE NEW MEDIA STARS»

As much as the promotion and the media have tiptoed around the fact that Khan, the WBA's light-welterweight champion, is a Muslim and Salita, his mandatory challenger, is an orthodox Jew, there was no escaping the issue in a respectful and dignified meeting. They meet in Newcastle on 5 December, long enough after sunset to conform with Salita's strict religious observance of the Jewish Sabbath. "Amir is an excellent boxer with a great amateur pedigree," the unbeaten New Yorker, born in Ukraine, said. "I have respect for Amir inside the ring and outside the ring, 100%. This is what we have been doing since we've been kids. In the ring it doesn't make any difference who you are, what you are. It's just two guys punching each other."The media shouldn't make something out of this that it's not. If anything, it's a positive event, where two people from different backgrounds come together."Khan said: "He's a nice guy. Boxing is a sport and we respect each other. It's a fight I wanted as much as Salita wanted. Going into this fight there's only one thing on my mind – to win the fight, regardless of the religion."
As the promoter, Frank Warren, observed, "If you could end wars in the boxing ring, there'd be a lot of happy mothers around. These are two very, very nice guys."

«There is no gay gene – that is the biggest crock out there at the moment. I’m making a call to other gay writers, to say the period of identity politics is over. I’m saying to everyone, use your talents – if you’re gay, black, Asian, whatever – use them to address universal human questions. Stop trying to push young gays back into the ghetto: let them out, let them think of addressing and speaking to a general audience – that’s the true mission of the gay intellectuals of the 21st century – yes they’re gay, but they’re intellectuals first.’

WOMEN IN REVOLT

London, Aug 13 (ANI): Majority of women employees prefer having a male boss, a new study has revealed. The study, conducted by OnePoll.com, revealed that two thirds of women prefer working for male bosses because they are better managers and less prone to moods. Many female employees also like having a man in charge because they are ‘more authoritative’ and ‘more straight-talking’ than their female counterparts.Women rated men ‘tougher’, ‘better at delegation’ and also more likely to regularly dish out praise.hey even said that men are better decision-makers and have more grasp of the business overall than women do.The poll also revealed that four out of ten women who have female bosses believe they could do a better job than their immediate superior. The study of 2,000 women in full or part-time employment asked whether they would prefer to have a man or woman as their immediate line manager.

While the average 23-year-old allegedly buys up to 31 pairs a year "of all styles, tightness and colours", and even 40-year-olds manage a dozen pairs in as many months, once you reach 44 (I'm 46) Debenhams reckons you give up the habit for life. Not because by then you have bought 284 pairs (based on the survey's figures) and never need to fork out for Y-fronts or tangas ever again, but because a woman is doing it for you. "Even the most macho men delegate the duty of buying underpants to women as soon as they can," claims Rob Faucherand, the store's head of men's accessories buying. There's obviously some truth in this: a married friend the same age as me admitted that he couldn't remember the last time he bought his own pants. But the survey leaves some questions unanswered. Firstly, what about men who love men? Who buys their smalls? Just as importantly, what about all the single straight blokes out there?

«I LIKE MONEY ON THE WALL»

Nov. 11 (Bloomberg) -- Andy Warhol’s 1962 “200 One Dollar Bills” fetched $43.8 million tonight at Sotheby’s contemporary- art auction in New York. The seller was London-based collector Pauline Karpidas, according to two people familiar with the situation. Karpidas couldn’t immediately be reached for comment. The work, estimated to sell for $8 million to $12 million, is among the artist’s earliest silkscreen paintings, a process that became his signature technique. The 7 1/2-foot wide canvas comprises repetitive images of 200 actual-sized one-dollar bills, reproduced in tones of black on grey, with a blue treasury seal.

(AFP) – 5 hours ago

NEW YORK — A 1984 Michael Jackson portrait by pop-art icon Andy Warhol surpassed estimates to fetch 812,500 dollars at auction on Tuesday, but two headline pieces at the Christie's sale in New York flopped.
Warhol's "Tunafish Disaster," a 1963 silkscreen depicting two housewives who died from poisoned tuna, had to be withdrawn when bidding stumbled at around 4.7 million dollars. It had been expected to go for six million.
Even more disappointing was the failure to find a buyer for Jean-Michel Basquiat's "Brother Sausage," a giant six-panel painting by the late African-American graffiti artist expected to fetch up to 12 million dollars. The rest of the bidding was lively and the sale made a total of 74.1 million dollars, well within the range of pre-auction estimates. The 46-lot auction was boosted by the sale of a 1996 painting by the Scottish artist Peter Doig, "Reflection (What Does Your Soul Look Like)," for more than 10 million dollars.Warhol's silkscreen Jackson portrait, painted during the era of the singer's wildly successful "Thriller" album, was owned by the Andy Warhol Foundation before being acquired by the seller, a Christie's spokeswoman told AFP.Believed to be one of four similar paintings, Christie's had valued the portrait at between 500,000 and 700,000 dollars.

«ART IS WHAT YOU CAN GET AWAY WITH»

The art world is in crisis. First there was too much money; now there isn't enough. Newspapers and print media are in crisis. Theory is in crisis (does anyone have time to do more than look at the pictures in magazines nowadays?). Curating is in crisis. The professional critic is in crisis (they are dropping like flies in north America). Artists – well, they're always in crisis, drama queens that they are.But crisis is good. Crisis is sexy. Crisis shakes you up. And if it changes our habits when it comes to looking at art, reading about it, or even making it, then that's probably good, too. Artists, if they're any good, are engaged in a war against habit, complacency and indifference.

Economists at both the Department of Education and the College Board agree that, to ensure high future earnings, men and women have an equal need for college degrees, and yet only women are getting that message. The numbers are startling. This summer the Center for Labor Market Studies at Northeastern University published the results of a study tracking the students who graduated from Boston Public Schools in 2007. Their conclusion: For every 167 females in four-year colleges, there were 100 males. In theory, the surge in the number of educated women should make up for male shortcomings when we're looking at the overall prospects for the economy. But men and women are not the same. At the same levels of education, women remain less inclined to roll the dice on risky business start-ups or to grind out careers in isolated tech labs. Revenue generated by women-owned businesses remains less than 5% of all revenue. And while the number of women taking on economically important majors is rising, women still earn only a fifth of the bachelor's degrees granted in physics, computer science and engineering.

BASQUIAT

In a modestly sized apartment on the Lower East of New York, the writing remains on the wall. Despite a childlike charm, they're no ordinary scribblings and the resident, Nicholas Taylor, has no intention of whitewashing over them. Originating from the hand of Jean-Michel Basquiat, they're a reminder of a close friendship that was curtailed by the untimely passing of the artist, aged 27 in 1988. Taylor was part of a very small tight-knit circle of friends that Basquiat trusted as his career spiralled. "All Jean wanted was someone to sit and watch him paint. To be quiet with him," reminisces Taylor.

"Any straight guys horny tonight? Need to bust a nut with no strings? On your way home from work and need to release some stress? Looking for a cool, in shape str8 guy who is discreet and in need of some hot, safe fun. Don’t even need to talk—just drop by, undress, sit back, and enjoy. Just be 20 to 50 the kind who has wife/GF at home and no one would guess you like this too.”Dude Sex.I didn’t coin it, and I’ve already heard how offensive the term is. But according to the all-knowing Internet, that is what it’s called when straight-identified men have sex with other straight-identified men.New phenomenon? It certainly wouldn’t appear so, but Dude Sex seems to have been brought into the mainstream by sites like Craigslist. I lifted the above ad from the Casual Encounters section. A WHORE IN THE BEDROOM

Not surprising then that many women look for the bad boy image and all it brings with it when choosing an Fbuddy. Reasons cited for this are a heady mix of boldness, self-confidence, passion and being eager to try new things. Andy Hammonds, Founder of My-Fbuddy which is an upbeat and light-hearted adult dating site, explains further, “When it comes to sex buddies women don’t worry so much about the flip side of the coin and head straight for men who are up for anything and often use women just for sex – things that may not seem right in a long term relationship are a huge turn on whilst enjoying some no strings fun.” So it seems what’s good for the goose is good for the gander; both wanting a one night stand with the unpredictable excitement of the gigolo type for her and, yes you guessed it, a ‘whore in the bedroom’ for him.

LONDON—A new Web site, www.myandywarhol.com, has been created by Joe Simon, who owns an Andy Warhol self-portrait that had been rejected by the Andy Warhol Art Authentication Board, reports Artnet. Simon, a U.S. film producer now living in London, purchased the 1964 portrait for $195,000 in 1989. The black and white image on a bright orange-red background had been authenticated by former Warhol employee Frederick Hughes, but rejected by the board and stamped "denied," making it far less valuable. In July 2007, Simon filed a lawsuit against the Warhol board for $120 million, and his story has been written about in Vanity Fair, ARTnews, the Art Newspaper, and elsewhere.

Thanks to a Harvard study we find that male attraction to exaggerated masculine or feminine features (depending on the man's sexual orientation) is part of biology's big master plan. According to the study of 900 men and women, published online in the journal Archives of Sexual Behavior, both gay men and straight men are hard-wired to find faces that are "sexually dimorphic" the most appealing. Sexual dimorphism is the accentuation of the preferred sex's most traditional features. Think a "broad jaw, broad forehead, and more pronounced brow ridge" in men and "tapered chin, larger lips, and a narrower forehead" in women.

«EVERYTHING IS BEAUTIFUL»

«GOOD BUSINESS IS THE BEST ART»

By JOANN LOVIGLIO (AP) –

PHILADELPHIA — Even in these trying financial times, you're not going to see many going-out-of-business sales like this one.
On Sunday, hundreds of works from the art collection of failed banking giant Lehman Brothers will go on the auction block at Freeman's auction house in Philadelphia. The 200-plus pieces of modern and contemporary art up for bid once lined the corridors and graced the board rooms of Lehman's offices in New York, Boston and Wilmington, Del. Highlights of Sunday's sale include prints by Claes Oldenburg, David Hockney, Robert Indiana, Frank Stella and Roy Lichtenstein.
Anne Henry, vice president of the 204-year-old auction house, valued the collection at $500,000 to $750,000. There is no reserve price on most of the art, save for about a dozen pieces estimated at $10,000 and up. "Our phones have been ringing off the hook," she said. "The pieces are interesting, in great condition and appeal to all kinds of collectors."

«I BELIEVE MEDIA IS ART»

Over the summer, David Hockney has been lying in his bed in Bridlington, East Yorkshire's answer to Malibu, and trying to capture the sun rising over the bay on his iPhone. He uses an application called Brushes, and his thumb. When he's finished a drawing, he'll send it to 20 or so friends, straight off, by email. On good days each of his friends has been getting half a dozen original works by Britain's best-loved artist well before breakfast. Were they suitably appreciative, I wonder. "Well, I think so," says Hockney, whose accent seems even more lived-in since his return to his home county. "Someone said that if they see an email from me they know they don't have to answer it, it's a bit of pure pleasure and it's free. So that's all right, I suppose."

«SEX IS MORE EXCITING ON THE SCREEN AND BETWEEN THE PAGES THAN BETWEEN THE SHEETS»

TOY BOY

You may be in charge at work, but things are different at home. I've been married to someone 19 years older than me, someone exactly the same age, and my partner of the past 11 years clocks in nine years less than me – and I know what works best: give me youth every time. In between I fell for a couple of really younger men – more than two decades younger, in fact – and the press delighted in referring to them as my "toy boys", as if I'd temporarily lost my mind. I admit, one turned out to be a big mistake, but the other affair was thoroughly delightful until it had run its natural course. There are plenty of reasons to celebrate younger men. They usually do their own ironing. They know what they are going to wear. They like different music, so your taste gets broadened. So what if they've got weird friends and aren't interested in your old mates from yesteryear? There's nothing but pluses in my opinion. For a start, it keeps me on my toes and stops me moaning too much – which is far too ageing.
