POST WARHOL PREDICTION: IN THE FUTURE COSMOPOLITAN MAGAZINE WILL BE HONORED BY GLAAD AS THE GAYEST MAGAZINE EVER

«IT'S CALLED GOSSIP AND OF COURSE IT'S AN OBSESSION OF MINE»

There are a lot of differences between the various generations of queers, like how the older ones grew up reading Cosmo while the newer ones only bother with serious financial digests and video games. But I feel the main contrast lies in underlying attitudes towards sex. Old queens grew up with very little gay visibility in the media and a heightened sense of gayness being something taboo and even (in society's eyes) sinful and downright sick. They came of age feeling that gay was something to hide or to "get over," and often felt more attracted to anonymous, shame-based sex than to open, long-term connections. Those hoary attitudes still pop up, but mainly the younger gays have grown up with queer iconography everywhere they turn and with gay marriage seeming to become an eventual reality as society progresses. They have healthier views about sex and seem unencumbered by the urgency to hide and slink around in dark alleys. In fact, they generally want long-term relationships more than their predecessors did (though they'll gladly spice up those relationships with shameless online hookups, albeit often with their partner's permission--or even inclusion

TOM OF FINLAND

Until his death in 1991, Tom of Finland, who was born Touko Laaksonen, produced thousands of homoerotic images depicting men before, during and after fetishistic sexual activity. His work has always had a cult gay following — the photographer Robert Mapplethorpe was a major promoter — as well as considerable impact within the fashion community. Vivienne Westwood famously used his drawing of two naked cowboys on a T-shirt, and designers like John Bartlett and Jean-Paul Gaultier have also mined his aesthetic.Though “XXL” probably won’t find its way onto a ton of coffee tables, its publication, with essays by Camille Paglia, John Waters, Armistead Maupin and Edward Lucie-Smith, should help establish Tom of Finland’s work within a broader community. As Paglia writes, “His fantastic action figures, recalling the superheroes of comic books, belong to the graphic tradition of animation — an ever-expanding genre that may be currently eclipsing the fine arts in prestige and influence».

PERSONNALY I LOVED PORNO AND I BOUGHT LOTS OF IT ALL THE TIME"

Earlier this week, adult film star Barrett Long became the latest public figure to cause a bit of a stir on Howard Stern's infamously inflammatory radio show. Long, who has performed in over 100 gay porn videos for studios such as Falcon, and who has recently been seen in some straight adult films, told Stern that he has on occasion accepted money in exchange for certain sexual favors, in particular for allowing male clients to perform oral sex on him. One of these clients, he claimed, is or was a member of the Dallas Cowboys NFL team Although Stern's lackey Artie Lange immediately shouted out numerous guesses as to who the unnamed brokeback benefactor might be (key players Tony Romo and Terrell Owens were among the barrage of names), Long denied that any of Lange's suggestions had taken a ride on his famously oversized disco stick.
Long insisted multiple times during the interview that he was "100% straight," but blogs such as Towleroad and Outsports Jock Talk rightly pointed out the discrepancy between  100+ gay films (most of which feature Long having anal sex with other men, a sparse few times on the receiving end) and "100% straight."

The once-mighty Detroit Three that dominated North America for generations will shrink to the Detroit Two, and a collapse into bankruptcy protection that will cut the auto industry down looms in 30 days. Those were two of the key developments in a watershed day for Detroit that culminated with the U.S. government effectively ordering Chrysler LLC and General Motors Corp. to shape up and address fundamental problems they have been unable to solve for decades.By the end of April, Chrysler will be in bankruptcy protection if it doesn't complete a strategic alliance with Italian auto giant Fiat SpA and further cut costs. GM has 30 days beyond that to undertake a more dramatic and sweeping restructuring than it has already proposed and to come to a new deal with its bondholders and the United Auto Workers.“It is a failure of leadership – from Washington to Detroit – that led our auto companies to this point,” U.S. President Barack Obama declared as he rejected restructuring plans the two companies submitted in February, while giving them a bit more time to do their own repair jobs.

SHOWING OFF FOR 15 MINUTES OF FAME

«IT'S CALLED GOSSIP AND OF COURSE IT'S AN OBSESSION OF MINE»

Strong word-of-mouth and no direct comedic competition led to another strong showing over the weekend for "I Love You, Man," which grossed $12.7 million, a decline of just 29 percent from its opening weekend. Compare that to bigger-budgeted fare such as "Watchmen," which declined 68 percent in its second weekend and another 62 percent the weekend after.
"I don't always feel like I have to make R-rated or PG-13; I just think it's whatever the story calls for," Mr. Hamburg says. "But this was fun because it is an adult movie and it deals with people talking about sex, and you don't have to skirt around it. Most people I know live in an R-rated world, you know? "He aimed for a mature R. There's no casual nudity or over-the-top violence, just a stream of profanity that some may find shocking. Others will simply recognize it as the patois of the thirtysomething young professional.

Ever so clever and tapped into the zeitgeist, the German publishing house Taschen recently sent out an e-mail blast promoting a new art book. KOONS FOR THE POOR! read the subject heading. At almost 600 pages, the book showcases the American king of kitsch art's "entire oeuvre to date, at a decidedly unKoonsian price" of $70, the e-mail read. (On Amazon, it's $44.10.) In 2007, the artist's "Hanging Heart (Magenta/Gold)" sold at auction for $23.6 million, setting the record at the time for a sculpture by a living and still very productive artist. Just last summer, a buyer paid $25.7 million for Koons's "Balloon Flower (Magenta)."

«IT'S CALLED GOSSIP AND OF COURSE IT'S AN OBSESSION OF MINE»

It's a familiar sight at New York Fashion Week: The women who rule the runways arrive in chauffeured cars with darkened windows. They stop on 40th Street beside the Bryant Park tents and emerge like the clone girls in a Robert Palmer music video, Aphrodites floating in on scallop shells, Starbucks skinny half-caf in one hand, Balenciaga bag in the other. Light bends around them. People know them by name. You never see their male counterparts -- or more accurately you never think you see them. They arrive almost unnoticed on foot from the Bryant Park Metro station, Eastpak backpacks slung over their shoulders. It's only when they're underground, congregated in twos and threes and riding the trains in New York or Paris or Milan that they stand out: 6-foot-2 packs of cheekbones and confidence, giraffes among the wildebeests.

«I LIKE EVERYBODY'S ART»

Artwork by Jeong Hwa Choi

VOYEURISTIC GENIUS

Warhol’s women are usually more interesting than his men. “He admired women. He wanted to be one. He wanted to be involved in their creation,” suggested Geldzahler. Among political portraits, the greatest are the 16-panel mourning canvas “Jackie”, based on newspaper shots taken hours after Kennedy’s assassination, painted in the blues and greys of civil war America, and the spectacular, shifting, Technicolor images of Mao, imbued with sexual ambiguity and a sinister play on the link between eroticism and power.

Understanding this relationship lay at the root of Warhol’s voyeuristic genius. “He cringed from physical contact. It was that celibacy that gave him enormous manipulative power over the magnificently beautiful people he brought together,” recalled his Factory friend Gerard Malanga. Detachment, the aestheticising stare of the ascetic as well as the dandy, determined the neutrality with which Warhol fixed the materialistic, spiritually bankrupt mood of western late capitalism, co-opting even Mao into his vision of psychedelic emptiness.

STRAIGHT GUYS IS THE NEW GAY

Paul Donahoe was dismissed from the Nebraska wrestling team after a blog posted pictures of him taken from a website that features photos and videos of naked male athletes for a gay audience. At first, it shattered Donahoe's world but now the unapologetic athlete is fighting his way back. He has transferred to Edinboro University and was reinstated by the NCAA after sitting out a semester."I didn't do anything illegal," he tells Boston Globe. "I didn't hurt anyone. I don't think I did anything wrong. Who should I apologize to?""We've all made mistakes," says Edinboro University athletic director Bruce Baumgartner. "Not that I condone what he did, but there are players all across the country on college teams that actually have broken the law or harmed people that are still competing."Donahoe has been the butt of many jokes and ridicule on the Internet after he showed off his goodies online."I am straight, but on the forums people make a lot of gay jokes about me," he says. "I'm not too concerned. They can talk about me all they want, it doesn't matter. If a guy wants to be with a guy, who cares?"

«WOMEN IN REVOLT»

Call them cougars or call them MILFS, just don't call them over. Let's discuss Demi Moore, 46, and Madonna, 50. The two Kabbalists are the envy of younger women everywhere. Demi, for her sexy, un-plastic-surgery-looking looks and devoted 15 years-younger, GORGEOUS husband, Ashton Kutcher, 31, who Twittered this shot of her over the weekend, and Madonna for her rock hard body and years younger lovers, A-Rod, 33, and Jesus Luz, 22.

Now, let's just contrast all this hotness and intrigue with the slew of bland 20-somethings, trying to compete to get on magazine covers and into the nation's consciousness. Megan Fox, Jessica Alba, Heidi Montag, Natalie Portman, Anne Hathaway, Blake Lively, Audrina Patridge, Jessica Biel, and even Kim Kardashian, — do they honestly have even the depth of deep hotness and complexity as our 40-somethings?

Still, it's a big step up from the standard box placement on the right, which has sometimes sold for as little as $60,000 a day. We've been hearing about YouTube's plans from agency insiders for some time. Adam Stewart, Google's industry director for media and entertainment, said the video site is still experimenting with formats, and it'll watch its new "cross talk" unit to see how it performs and how users interact with it.
It's no surprise an entertainment company was the first to give the new format a whirl. YouTube gets 30 million visitors to its home page daily, all looking for video and many right smack in the middle of studios' favored demographics.

Our economy is driving some people to suicide. It's driving others to panic and/or desperation.Desperate times call for desperate measures and a growing number of college educated women have become desperate. The Associated Press is reporting that as our economy tightens, more educated women are using their bodies to help turn a profit. There has been a rise in the number of white collar women turning to the porn industry as well as to the seedy world of strip clubs: Employers across the adult entertainment industry say they're seeing an influx of applications from women who, like Brown, are attracted by the promise of flexible schedules and fast cash. Many have college degrees and held white-collar jobs until the economy soured.   "You're seeing a lot more beautiful women who are eligible to do so many other things," said Gus Poulos, general manager of New York City's Sin City gentleman's club. Of those questioned, ages 12 to 19, 71 percent said that arguing was a normal part of a relationship; 44 percent said fighting was a routine occurrence. The results of the survey, conducted by the Boston Public Health Commission across the city and equally among boys and girls, are startling for local health workers who see a generation of youths who seem to have grown accustomed, even insensitive, to domestic violence."I think you'd have to be pretty jaded if you weren't startled by it," said Casey Corcoran, director of the health commission's new Start Strong program.

“I THINK EVERYONE SHOULD BE BUGGED ALL THE TIME...BUGGED AND PHOTOGRAPHED”

LONDON — Jade Goody, a dental assistant turned reality-TV star whose whirlwind journey from poverty to celebrity to tragedy became a national soap opera and morality tale in Britain, has died. The 27-year-old had cancer and died in her sleep early Sunday at her home in Essex, southeast England, her publicist Max Clifford said.Goody gained fame at 21 in 2002, when she joined the reality television show "Big Brother," in which contestants live together for weeks and are constantly filmed. Loud and brash, she became a highly divisive star — initially mocked as an ignorant slob, then celebrated as a forthright everywoman by a hungry tabloid press. It was a pattern of praise and condemnation that followed her for the rest of her life. Goody became a national touchstone who sparked debate about race, class and celebrity in Britain. For some, Goody was a survivor who had overcome a tough childhood on a London housing estate. Her father was absent and often in jail, and her mother struggled with drug addiction. But she also was reviled in the press during her stint on "Big Brother" for her weight, her big mouth and her apparent lack of general knowledge — she branded the English region of East Anglia "East Angular," and asked whether it was abroad. She didn't win the show, but she did become a celebrity, earning millions through television and magazine appearances, an autobiography, a perfume and a series of exercise videos. It was during a follow-up stint on a celebrity version of "Big Brother" in 2007 that Goody was labeled a racist bully for her treatment of another contestant, Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty. Goody bad-mouthed Shetty's cooking of Indian food, mocked her accent and referred to her as "Shilpa Poppadom." While complaints against the show skyrocketed, so did ratings.

“THEY ALWAYS HAD GREAT GIRL MODELS BUT NOW THE BOY MODELS ARE JUST AS GOOD“

“ONE THING I MISS IS THE TIME AMERICA HAD BIG DREAMS ABOUT THE FUTURE"

The problem has been evident for a long time. Executive compensation, the most evident manifestation of this legal corruption of management, was labelled scandalous by Fortune magazine more than 20 years ago, and repeatedly ever since, to no avail. While America escalated its love affair with leadership, its corporate leaders singled themselves out for increasingly obscene pay packages, all the while extolling the virtues of teamwork and sustainable enterprise.
Alongside this came all that "downsizing": Fail to make the targets, no matter how profitable the company remained, and out the door went thousands of employees, those "human resources." So conveniently called, in fact, because while managers have to be careful about human beings, they can dispose of human resources like any other resources. But at what cost? Rather high, because these people carried out much of the critical knowledge of their companies, as well as those companies' hearts and souls. A robust enterprise is a community of human beings, not a collection of human resources.

March 14 (Bloomberg) -- American International Group Inc., the insurer saved from collapse by taxpayer bailouts, was ordered by the U.S. Treasury to scale back bonuses and reimburse the government for some 2008 payments, according to a person briefed on the matter.Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner telephoned Chief Executive Officer Edward Liddy on March 11 to demand changes to New York-based AIG’s bonus payments, an administration official said separately. The people declined to be identified because discussions weren’t public. Liddy told Geithner in a letter that retention payments for 2009 -- designed to keep employees from leaving AIG -- will be cut at least 30 percent, and that some payments can’t be stopped because they’re binding contracts.“I do not like these arrangements and find it distasteful and difficult to recommend to you that we must proceed with them,” Liddy wrote to Geithner in the March 14 letter, which said that the agreements predated his appointment by the U.S. “With the benefit of hindsight, I would have designed these differently and at significantly lower levels.” Liddy wasn’t among those entitled to a bonus. AIG had expected its retention payments would cost about $1 billion, according to a March 2 regulatory filing. The payments, reported earlier by Bloomberg, drew criticism from U.S. lawmakers who objected to giving individual employees as much as $4 million at a company whose wrong-way bets on credit- default swaps helped deepen the global credit crisis. AIG had said the payments were needed to keep talented people.

“IT'S CALLED GOSSIP AND OF COURSE IT'S AN OBSESSION OF MINE”

PARIS (AFP) — Yves Saint Laurent's partner Pierre Berge has removed four Andy Warhol portraits of the fashion designer from a major Paris exhibition on the US pop art giant only days before the launch of a show.Berge told AFP on Friday that he had asked for the series of 1974 works to be removed from a section of the show featuring other Warhol portraits of designers, such as Giorgio Armani or Sonia Rykiel, under the title "glamour"."I don't think Yves Saint Laurent comes under the category of 'glamour'", Berge said."Warhol's Wide World", opening at the Grand Palais on March 18, is shaping up as one of the year's top art happenings, with some of the 150 works coming out of private collections, such as Berge's, for the first time.
"I told the curator I did not see things this way, either he changed Saint Laurent's place or I would withdraw the paintings. Apparently this was not possible for one reason or another and so I withdrew the four works," Berge added.
Berge said the YSL portraits instead could have been hung in a section titled "artists"."I don't deny he was a designer, that was how he described himself, but I think he was more than that."Alain Cueff, curator of the show which claims to be the first Warhol portrait exhibition, told AFP that "I regret these portraits will not be on show for the public."

«THERE SHOULD BE COURSE IN FIRST GRADE ON LOVE»

It’s over between John Mayer and Jennifer Aniston, again, People reported. A source told the magazine the rocker, who is currently at work on the follow up to his 2006 studio album “Continuum,” broke up with the actress when she returned from promoting “Marley & Me” in Europe.Another source suggested to the mag it was a mutual split.“They had some disagreements and decided to not continue to see each other,” the second source said. “Jen is moving on with life like she always does. She seems happy.”Jen and John previously split last summer, and the musician told the paparazzi not long after that he was the one who ended the relationship. However, the two rekindled their romance in November 2008.

The tabloid media, of course, have always peered into the excesses of the rich and famous with a mix of puritan disapproval and voyeurism. But these outlets and other news organizations are now recording troubling uses of taxpayer money at country clubs, private airports and glamorous retreats and, in so doing, explicitly tapping into a fierce populist anger at corporate America, and even pressuring Congress to hold companies accountable. TMZ, a Web site better known for unflattering paparazzi shots of Britney Spears and Rihanna, drove mainstream coverage and Congressional outrage with a blog post late last month that exclaimed, “Bailout Bank Blows Millions Partying in L.A.” The site reported that Northern Trust, a bank that received $1.6 billion in taxpayer money, had hosted hundreds of clients and employees at a golf tournament and a series of parties in Southern California. “Your tax dollars, hard at work,” the site wrote.

“IT'S CALLED GOSSIP AND OF COURSE IT'S AN OBSESSION OF MINE”

Celebrity worship syndrome grew out of the celebrity worship scale devised by US psychologist Jim Houran in 2003.
The scale, based on research involving 20,000 people, describes the level to which people can become obsessed with celebrities. The syndrome has three stages, according to Houran. The first is "a healthy interest (in celebrities) that is a form (of) escapism", but also has a social role because it encourages interaction around the water cooler. The second phase is addiction. Here, the sufferer can withdraw from reality and begin to find fulfillment in stories about their favourite celebrity rather than social interaction. The third stage borders on pathological. Obsessive behaviour and celebrity stalkers are found at the extreme end.

As a self-hating gay adolescent in 1950s America, Edmund White was inspired by Arthur Rimbaud. He too wanted to swap his provincial home for metropolitan Bohemia, be befriended and supported by an older man, and forego the drudgery of a long apprenticeship to make his mark while still in his teens.Like most writers, White had to wait far longer for literary success than Rimbaud, who wrote his entire oeuvre between the ages of 15 and 19. Now in his late sixties, he pays tribute to his mentor in a short monograph which, as he freely admits, draws largely on secondary sources to tell the familiar story of the prodigy who changed the course of poetry before abandoning literature, spending the last decade of his short life as a trader and gun-runner in Africa.

I asked him what would be his definition of a good picture now: «I deleted every idea I ever had about pictures so I can make and see good ones in 2009». Gee, that's great.

But Neil Tennant believes reality television is stifling creativity and bands like the Pet Shop Boys cannot survive any more. He said: "I think it promotes a very limited, formulaic view of pop music."I think it is best regarded as a game show."It doesn't really have anything to do with music."

If you are interested in the over 200 gay and bi videos he has written and directed, check out his website at DonnerInc.com. His master(bate)pieces have been nominated for 58 awards, and he received 22. He has been labeled “gay adult cinema’s most controversial director and writer, and he has been called the Frank Capra of gay porn. What I love about his book is the thread of humor running rampant, even though we’re not supposed to laugh about sex. Donner gives insider tips such as: “Tell the director if you are close to cumming. It’s called a money shot for a reason. Blow it, and you’ve just blown a couple thousand dollars of the producer’s investment.” Regarding talking dirty, “Only do it if you know more than three phrases and sound butch. A queeny ‘That’s fierce’ won’t work.” Are you in a scene with someone you aren’t attracted to? “Close your eyes and they look just like Brad Pitt.” His advice concerning agents and the casting couch: “Don’t do anything you wouldn’t do in a job interview.” Well, not quite. “Show yourself in your naked glory and verify the length of your ‘resume,’ but that’s it!” In doing bi movies, “If a vagina scares you, stay away. Your erection deficiency will hurt the scene and your paycheck.” Dean Phoenix warns of shaving too much: “I’ve seen pubes that look like Hitler moustaches!”

NEW YORK (AP) — Owners of expensive art are increasingly using their collections as collateral to obtain a much-needed cash infusion.Works by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and Andy Warhol are among the pieces collectors have been leveraging in recent months. The Metropolitan Opera put up two Marc Chagall murals in its lobby as collateral. And renowned photographer Annie Liebovitz recently borrowed $15 million against her entire collection of images. Art brokers say people are doing it for a number of reasons. They include financial issues, raising money for businesses or buying more art.

“MORE THAN ANYTHING PEOPLE JUST WANT STARS»

Her singing was dominated by a backing track. Her moves were nothing special -- defined by much strutting and stripper-like shimmying, with the minimum amount of acrobatics to prove her mettle as a dance-pop queen. Her physical form, still beautiful, didn't take one's breath away the way it did when she was 17.

But on Tuesday's opening night of her "Circus" tour at the New Orleans Arena, Britney Spears, the mighty Aphrodite with the troublesome tawdry streak, nonetheless renewed her claim as one of the world's most adept manipulators of the public interest. Powering through a 90-minute show that integrated her impetuous teen hits with the more perverse material from the albums she released after a very public breakdown that made her a constant in the tabloids, the Louisiana native flashed her famous good ol' girl smile at the fans, mostly female, who still find her a worthy patron saint of the erotic arts.

PARIS (AFP) — Paris is tipping its hat to pop art legend Andy Warhol, whose portraits of movie stars, world leaders, soup cans and other American icons made him one of the most emulated artists of his time."Warhol's Wide World", an exhibition opening at the Grand Palais this month is already shaping up as one of the year's top art happenings, with some of the 150 works coming out of private collections for the first time. It also marks the first time that a French museum showcases Warhol since his death in 1987, bringing a French perspective to the works of the quintessential American artist, said curator Alain Cueff.

It may seem that Liz Smith being put out to pasture marks a generational shift, particularly after James Brady, the creator of Page Six, died in late January at age 80. But these are uncertain times for the entire trade. Circulation of In Touch Weekly and Star are spiralling downwards. Even the new scandal-mongering stars have been fading as online gossip has become a commodity business. After a brief moment in the sun, Perez Hilton seems to have burned out, thank God. Last week, having failed to find a buyer for Defamer.com, Gawker Media simply folded the Hollywood site into its main Gawker.com operations. One of Defamer's bloggers said there are just too many others trying to cover the same beat.

JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT

Basquiat was indeed cool. He didn't try to be: he just was. He had interests ranging from hip-hop, jazz, baseball and boxing through to French poetry, the drawings of Leonardo da Vinci and highbrow modernist art. It was the appreciation of the latter, and most likely his encounter with the art of American abstract expressionist painter Cy Twombly that gave Basquiat the confidence to go from graffiti to fine art.

By the early 80s Basquiat was gaining a significant reputation for his paintings. Not only were they highly individualistic – a mixture of words, crudely drawn cartoonish figures and daubs of coloured paint – they were paintings. That was pretty radical. At the time art had disappeared down an intellectual cul-de-sac, where abstract, minimalist sculptures, devoid of any discernable humanity, were very much the order of the day. Basquiat's art wasn't so much a new chapter; it was a whole new book.

PERSONNALY I LOVED PORNO AND I BOUGHT LOTS OF IT ALL THE TIME"

-The argument about straight guys in gay porn is constant and unending. Have you worked with gay-for-pay models?

-I work with them a lot and what I’ve found is that, of course they’re not really straight. But it’s the strangest things because, honestly, I think they’ve convinced themselves that they are actually straight and they’re doing this for the money. There’s a very interesting psychology behind it. They’re in such denial. Because the thing is, if you really need money, there are other things you can do but take a big dick in your ass.

-Would you go straight-for-pay, like gay porn star Blake Riley did recently?

- I thought about it, but it’s not a direction I want to go in. I occasionally am into a girl, but it’s rare, and it doesn’t happen enough that I think I would do it on video.

ALLENTOWN, Pa. (AP) — A 7-foot painting that may or may not be the work of famed pop artist Keith Haring went on sale on eBay Friday night. Opening bid: 99 cents. The seller is a Pennsylvania man, Ed Oswald, who believes the "Hope" painting to be an original Haring. But his cousin Kermit Oswald, a childhood friend of Haring and one of the world's leading authorities on his work, has long said it's a knockoff. As a result, the eBay listing does not claim the painting is an authentic Haring. Instead, buyers will bid on "an original painting on board from the 1980's in a remarkable likeness and style of a Keith Haring, with a very interesting story & provenance."
