«MUSCLES ARE GREAT;EVERYBODY SHOULD HAVE AT LEAST ONE THAT THEY CAN SHOW OFF»

«ANYONE CAN TAKE A GOOD PICTURE»

[Dennis) Hopper’s photographs -- many of which will be seen in an exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in July -- speak of vitality and looseness, artistic freedom and energy. They straddle the Beat era and the culture of Pop, Kerouac and Frank on one side, Warhol on the other. He credited Duchamp, whose first retrospective he saw in 1963 at the Pasadena Art Museum, as a seminal influence. “The whole idea of the ready-made and that the artist of the future could be somebody who points their finger and says ‘it’s art’ and it’ll be art,” Hopper recalled in a conversation published in 2001.

“I think of that with my photographs. I think of them as ‘found’ paintings because I don’t crop them, I don’t manipulate them or anything. So they’re like ‘found’ objects to me.”

Elton John's Moroccan fans gave the British pop icon a warm, rapturous welcome in the city of Rabat on Wednesday night, despite a political group's criticism of his presence in the north African country."I thank Morocco, the royal palace and the festival for inviting me. I am proud to be singing in Morocco," John said in French as he launched into a three-hour performance at the Mawazine Festival. The 63-year-old, who performed hits like I'm Still Standing, Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word and Candle in the Wind, did not make any reference to the controversy over his visit to the French- and Arabic-speaking nation.

MEN ARE FUCKING DUMB, THAT'S WHY IT'S FUN TO HAVE SEX WITH THEM!

Jersey Guido: Lionized on MTV's "Jersey Shore", you can ID this species by their buff bodies as well as their ever-so perfectly groomed eyebrows and hair. Their main mission every summer is to try to get as many hot girls as they can, which makes them extremely dangerous. Guilty of being a Guido lover myself, I can tell you from experience they are all bad news. They will usually always put their crew of boys first and would rather dance to beats then buy a pretty girl a drink.

LEO CASTELLI AND THE EARLY POP ART

Castelli didn't open his own gallery — actually, a converted bedroom in his Upper East Side apartment — until 1957, and it was another year before he made his biggest splash, the first solo exhibition of a promising Southerner not yet 30: Jasper Johns. Castelli had seen his work in a group show at New York's pioneering Jewish Museum, but the "discovery" came only when Castelli was taking a studio tour of another young Southerner who'd also shown in the museum's exhibition: Rauschenberg. The two artists (neither Jewish) were neighbors and shared a fridge. When Castelli wanted ice in his drink, there was Johns, surrounded by his painted flags and targets and alphabets. Castelli signed them both.

David Hockney's 1967 A Bigger Splash sold in 2006 for £2.6 million. Back in 2002, Roy Lichtenstein's 1964 Happy Tears went or $7.2 million. And if you want to really dig deep, Jasper Johns's 1959 False Start commanded a staggering $80 million in 2006. As did Andy Warhol's 1964 Turquoise Marilyn (of Marilyn Monroe) in 2007. With prices like these, do the rest of us stand any chance of buying some original Pop Art? Well, the answer is a guarded "yes". Early, strictly limited edition silkscreen prints of many of these iconic works can set you back tens of thousands of pounds. But there are more accessible pieces to be tracked down as well. You can pick up a signed silkscreen print, from a limited edition of 100, of Sir Peter Blake's Got a Girl (which depicts Fabian, Avalon, Ricky Nelson, Bobby Rydell and Elvis Presley) for around £2,500. Or a signed screen print from a limited edition of 500 of his Sergeant Pepper cover for around £1,500. But when buying any fine art or high-end antiques, I would strongly recommend you cultivate a relationship with a good specialist dealer before buying in earnest.

«DON'T PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT THEY WRITE ABOUT YOU. JUST MEASURE IT IN INCHES»

NEW YORK—“Don’t pay any attention to what they write about you,” Andy Warhol once advised. “Just measure it in inches.” By that gauge, he would likely be pleased with the number of words that have been written attempting to make sense of his life and his work. And with the eminent publication of the third volume of his catalogue raisonné that mass of material is about to get a even larger. Art publisher Phaidon has announced that the book, which covers Warhol’s paintings and sculptures from 1970 to 1974 — as the artist was returning to painting with his series of portraits of Mao after a period of devoting himself to film — will be released in June. Clocking in at 544 pages and retailing for $495, it is a hulking work by almost any measure.

LITTLE JOE

Little Joe is a documentary, plain and simple, tracing the life of Joe Dallesandro, who as a young man become an underground star, a potent symbol of the 60’s-inspired free love sexual revolution and an object of lust and icon of the emerging gay community.“In my movies, everyone’s in love with Joe Dallesandro,” noted the late Andy Warhol, who met Dallesandro at 17, and whose associate, Paul Morrissey, one of Warhol’s main collaborators at New York hangout known as The Factory, made young Joe a star of sorts in films like Lonesome Cowboys and Flesh. The documentary, directed by his stepdaughter, Nicole Haeusser, takes us back to the early 1970s, when Dallesandro was a streetwise youth with a sculpted body and an arrestingly beautiful face who unashamedly bared all for the camera. The tattoo he sports on his right shoulder — Little Joe — he did himself during a brief stint in reform school and earned him the lifelong moniker. His survival skills on the mean streets of New York earn him a special place in music history as Little Joe in Lou Reeds’ famous “Walk on the Wild Side,” a song that was exceedingly daring for its time. Through a series of interviews, Dallesandro weaves a fascinating tale of a life in which he is photographed by world-famous photographers like Richard Avedon, becomes an object of desire for Tennessee Williams, meets Sir Laurence Olivier and works with famed French director Louis Malle (in one his lesser known works.)

«GOOD BUSINESS IS THE BEST ART»

Warhol remained the market’s workhorse. “He’s the real volume trade in our market, the artist who sells the most by volume,” said Cappellazzo of Christie’s. That market could be deepening, as the high price for Self Portrait, from 1986, the year before Warhol died, reflected new interest in the artist’s later work. In case its price didn’t make the point, Mayer predicted that the haunting picture would have the same importance in art history as Claude Monet’s Water Lilies.

«I LIKE EVERYBODY'S ART»

LONDON — The Tate Modern celebrates its tenth birthday on Wednesday having firmly won a place among the must-see attractions of London. When it was opened by the Queen on May 12, 2000 in a gargantuan former power station on the banks of the River Thames, few would have predicted the museum would attract more than 45 million visitors in its first decade.
The museum has hosted 52 temporary exhibitions featuring the work of the biggest names in modern art, including Edward Hopper, Frida Kahlo, Matisse, Picasso, Mark Rothko, Salvador Dali and Arshile Gorky.Tate Modern filled a gap -- before it opened London was the only major European city without a top-quality museum of modern art, perhaps because the British public was still suspicious of the genre. Michael Craig Martin, a former Tate trustee and a conceptual artist, said people immediately took a liking to the openness of the enormous space."It's hard not to remember just how much suspicion and unease there was about contemporary art before, whereas now it's everywhere -- it has become a part of the cultural life of the country in a way that was unimaginable 20 years ago, and the Tate has played a very big part in that," he told the Daily Telegraph.

BASQUIAT

BASEL, Switzerland — American painter Jean-Michel Basquiat, who died in 1988 of a drug overdose at only 27, once admitted that he did not know how to characterise his phenomenally successful work."I never know how really to describe it except maybe -- I don't know, I don't know how to describe my work, cause it's not always the same thing," he said.Indeed the onetime graffiti artist, who went on to collaborate with Andy Warhol, packed his works with a mish-mash of ideas ranging from music to contemporary culture to social commentary about racism and injustice. To mark his 50th birthday, the biggest retrospective yet of Basquiat's work has opened at the Beyeler Foundation in the northern Swiss city of Basel with more than 100 pieces on show, before moving onto Paris. Many of the works, drawn from both private and public collections around the world, display Basquiat's signature comic-like figures in bold colours."When you get into it, there's so much knowledge inside, a lot of contemporary inside," said the curator of the Basel show, Dieter Buchhart.

Miley Cyrus gave a 44-year-old gay director a lap dance. Isaac Mizrahi grabbed Scarlett Johansson's boob. Gay men and straight girls: Keep stray hands, butts, and body parts to yourselves. Just because there's no sexual tension doesn't mean it's OK.Among the greatest pitfalls of the gay guy-straight girl friendship (right after the odious phrase "fag hag") is the notion that, because they do not want to fuck each other, gay men and straight women can violate each others' personal boundaries. It happens all the time. It is unwelcome. Straight girls, I don't care how many times you saw Megan Mullally squeeze Sean Hayes' ass on Will and Grace. Just because you're directing your skankadoodle energy at a man who will not take you up on the offer doesn't mean your skankiness does not count—or that he wants to be subjected to it. Do not touch gay acquaintances' butts. Do not grab their junk. Even if you have one of those relationships where nonsexual pawing is the norm, think of the innocent onlookers—think of the children, forced to flee the room with covered eyes when 16-year-old Miley bumped and grinded with 44-year-old Adam Shankman. Even if Miley and Adam knew nothing illegal was about to happen, it's still gross for the rest of the world to witness a child dirty dancing with a man old enough to be her father. Oh, who are we kidding, old enough to be her grandfather. She's a Cyrus, after all.

«I LIKE MONEY ON THE WALL»

NEW YORK, NY.- The quality, scope and innovative vision of the late author Michael Crichton’s collection of contemporary art compelled buyers at Christie’s on May 11. The focal point of the sale was Jasper Johns’ Flag, 1960-1966, selling for $28,642,500 million (£19,476,900/€ 22,627,575) (estimate: $10 million-$15 million), the highest price ever achieved for a work by Johns at auction. The collection realized $93,323,500 (£63,459,980/€ 73,725,565) and sold 100% by lot and by value, becoming one of the most significant. Four bidders vied for the flag which took two minutes to sell ending at 6:55 pm. The winning bidder was a member of the U.S. art trade. Completed by Johns in 1966, the work, executed in encaustic, was purchased by Crichton over thirty years ago from the artist’s own collection. It was last seen in public in 1992 and was a key piece in the comprehensive and prized collection cultivated by the best-selling author of Jurassic Park. Johns’ iconic American flag are credited with jumpstarting the Pop art movement; paving the way for the avant garde works of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein in the mid 1960’s. The previous record was for Johns’ Figure 4, 1959, encaustic and printed paper collage on canvas, sold at Christie’s in May 2005 for $17.4. Another record was set for Mark Tansey’s Push/Pull, 2003, sold for $3, 28300 (₤2,188,580/ € 2,542,615) (estimate $800,000 to $1.2 million). The previous record for a Tansey was $3,040,000.
Further highlights included Ed Ruscha’s Voltage, 1964 that sold for $1,650,500 (₤776,900/ € 902,575) (estimate $700,000 to $1 million), Robert Rauschenberg’s Trapeze, 1964 which went for $6,354,500 (₤ 4,321,060/€ 5,020,055) (estimate $5 million to $7 million) and Andy Warhol’s Mao, 1973 that sold for $2,378,500 (₤ 1,617,380/ €

Toronto's Art Gallery of Ontario plans a major retrospective of American artist Julian Schnabel this fall. The artist, best known for films such as Basquiat and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, says he thinks of himself primarily as a painter. The AGO show, which will take in his work from the 1970s to the present, will look at how cinematic personalities and themes run through his work as a painter."It has become abundantly clear, as Julian Schnabel's painterly vision has evolved, that cinema has served to germinate his pictorial imagination, inspiring his paintings in diverse and dynamic ways," David Moos, the AGO's curator of modern and contemporary, said in a statement announcing the retrospective.Schnabel himself will curate a film series running in conjunction with the exhibition, Films that Matter to Julian Schnabel. He'll also appear at Cinematheque to introduce his own 2000 film Before Night Falls and Pixote, a 1981 Brazilian film about street kids and criminal gangs directed by Hector Babenco.

RECORD prices make big headlines. And they don’t come bigger than the story of Christie’s sale in New York on May 4th in which eight private collectors, including one Russian and another from Asia, fought over a richly coloured portrait Pablo Picasso painted of his young mistress during an unusual spurt of creativity in the spring of 1932, when he was 50 years old.
“Nude, Green Leaves and Bust” had belonged to the same American family since 1951. It had been shown just once in public and had only ever been photographed in black-and-white. The five-foot-high painting sold for $106.5m, the second $100m-plus price achieved for a work of art at auction this year (see article). NEW YORK — The Whitney Museum of American Art has received a major gift of more than 350 works of art from a longtime benefactor. The museum said Friday the donation was made by philanthropist and art collector Emily Fisher Landau. The 367 pieces include works by Carl Andre, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol and Willem de Kooning. The museum says it plans an exhibition of the works in early 2011. It says the gift will fill important gaps in its holdings. Fisher Landau is a longtime benefactor and trustee of the Whitney. In 1995, she established an endowment to support the Whitney Biennial exhibition.

«MORE THAN ANYTHING PEOPLE JUST WANT STARS»

Oh, to live the life of David LaChapelle. Ever since he ran away from his strict upbringing in Connecticut at 14 to live it hard and fast in New York with Andy Warhol and the Studio 54 set, it's been a rollercoaster ride of gay sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll. He's shot more than 150 covers for Rolling Stone magazine and worked with almost every celebrity misfit and music icon that popular culture has given us. Stories of his epic partying, not to mention his stint as a rent boy and his three mental-institution sojourns, only add to the legend. This new exhibition, a collection of satirical photographic tableaux centered on religion, corruption and exploitation, consolidates the more message-driven and artistic direction his work is taking.
In the Nineties he segued into shooting album covers and music videos for the likes of Mariah Carey, Gwen Stefani, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera and it emboldened him to make his first film. But it wasn't the celebrity-fest his fans were expecting — the thoughtful and critically acclaimed documentary Rize (about the urban dance craze popularly known as “krumping”) gave a voice to South Central Los Angeles's poverty-stricken, gang-ridden inhabitants.

(Reuters) - Fueled by international collectors and Wall Street investors reaping soaring profits, the beaten-down art market appears poised for a remarkable comeback after an 18-month stumble. Rare buying opportunities to buy works by such modern masters as Jasper Johns and Mark Rothko will spur stiff competition and hefty spending by deep-pocketed collectors at the critical spring sales hosted by auction powerhouses Sotheby's and Christie's, art experts predict."You're going to see records set," said Baird Ryan, managing director of the private financial and consulting services firm Art Capital Group.
"I think we're going to be surprised by buyers' excitement," he said. "The international money exists, and there has been a secular recovery in the U.S., particularly in capital markets. Wall Street has had a really good year."Top hedge fund managers -- who played no small role in the sustained art market boom that ended precipitously with the 2008 financial crisis -- recorded their best year ever in 2009. The annual ranking by AR: Absolute Return + Alpha showed the top 25 managers earned more than $25 billion.

Do you think you have to advertise the magazine differently for straight women and gay men?

DN: I was handed a great gift with Playgirl, because it appeals to both straight women and gay men. So straight men feel more comfortable with it—it’s not like I’m driving up in a van for Honcho or Inches magazine. If I did that, I’d get things thrown at me. I consider Playgirl to be the classic American brand. It comes out of a feminist background from the 1970’s, and so there’s a lot of goodwill toward it. So I’m just really trying to find the most interesting, attractive guys for the magazine and promote it that way. When I came onto the magazine, Playgirl wasn’t really acknowledging its male readership. I succeeded in getting rid of the “Entertainment For Women” byline—it was doing a disservice to the gay readers. Now, we’re the most open to both. Playgirl was the first magazine to be doing this male erotica in the mainstream, and now, we’re embracing our gay guys, straight women, and smattering of straight guys that buy the magazine—believe me, there are a few of those. And we’re very proud of the fact we really put a dent in Sarah Palin’s reputation. We’re very, very proud of that.
