«ONE THING I MISS IS THE TIME AMERICA HAD BIG DREAMS ABOUT THE FUTURE»

Romney vs Obama and still the 50 years old debate about less government intervention? Let's be clear here. Do you think that if any big company making military material is about to go bankrupt, that company will not be saved by the government? The rest is as Tom Wolfe once said like a train on the rails. Sometimes a little bit to the left, sometimes a little bit to the right but still basically always on the same track.

«I JUST READ EVERYTHING»

I agree with Camille Paglia that many feminists have underestimated the power of hormones in human behaviour and the creative power of sexual desire. I agree with her that many feminists have a Rousseau-ian view of human nature where they expect to be able to dress as they like, and go where they like, and drink as they like, and never come to harm. I agree that women who stay in abusive relationships are complicit in the violence. I even agree with her about the link between male obsession and achievement. I think it's quite possible that there is "no woman Mozart because there is no woman Jack the Ripper." And I absolutely agree about the damage postmodernism and its boring theories have done to culture and art.

"In the 21st century," she says in her brilliant new book, Glittering Images, "we are looking for meaning, not subverting it. The art world, mesmerised by the heroic annals of the old avant-garde, is living in the past." We are living, she says, "in the age of vertigo." We must, she says, "relearn how to see." And so, as you might expect, she shows us how. In a survey of artworks from ancient Egypt to contemporary America, she argues for the need to bring history and scholarship back into the teaching of art. "What I'm trying to show," she tells me, "is how it's possible to combine everything in one form of approach, to literature and art."

Gagosian and Castelli knew each other, played cards together and, at one point, owned a gallery together. (Gagosian also represents Edward Ruscha, Serra, Cy Twombly and Warhol, all once in Castelli’s stable.) Castelli introduced Gagosian to one of his wealthiest customers, billionaire S.I. Newhouse. While Castelli rarely played in the so-called secondary market (for work previously sold), Gagosian often did, putting his own and others’ money at risk. That tactic helped put him on the fast track to riches. Come 1988, Gagosian bid $17 million on behalf of Newhouse for Johns’ “False Start” (1959) at a Sotheby’s auction. “Everybody is stunned, and for me the price is unexplainable,” a dealer told The New York Times the next day.

YOUTH WITHOUT COCKINESS IS NO YOUTH AT ALL

PHILOSOPHY FOR THE 21st CENTURY: BEST HAIR

How can a woman's magazine have an article about «your best hair EVER» for 36 months in a row?.....

ARTISTIC FREEDOM

To young people, Warhol represents artistic freedom.   It is a freedom to cross boundaries--to paint, to create a magazine like Interview, to express yourself through music, like that of the Velvet Underground."
Another opinion is that Warhol is the successful model of the multi-media artist.  The photographer Cindy Sherman, a photographer, has made a film.  Gianni Versace, the fashion designer, designed books, and mounted installations. Musician Michael Stipe has become a successful film producer, and fashion designer Isaac Misrahi is beginning to focus on his acting career.
For performance artist Paul D. Miller, a.k.a. "D.J.Spooky that Subliminal Kid," Warhol  is the first true multi-media artist, and continues to inspire.  Miller performed at The Warhol in June, and in an interview on May 31 with Jordan Weeks, for Pittsburgh City Paper (vol. 10, no. 23), Miller theorized that now the issues surrounding digital media and the way different people control history make Warhol more relevant to him. "I’m fascinated by how Warhol was able to create a social milieu around his art that actually gave the art a different kind of life."    Even though, "the Warhol scene was operating in ‘50s and ‘60s America of ultra-conservative stuff, …he was able to slip in such subversive, strange things, that he’s now viewed as an establishment figure, which is really hilarious, you know?"

«Fame might be the best aphrodisiac but I wasn't famous enough to excite anyone except the rare individual. Where I was younger and less celebrated I had more success. Straight men might envy or compete with male sucesss but gay men seek out trophy boys».

WHY JERSEY SHORE GUYS CAN FUCK LOTS OF BABES

Being rude is a categorically negative behavior by most standards, and to suggest otherwise–that is, to mount a defense of rudeness–would be a really strange thing to do. But psychology research is often at its best when it endorses positions that at first glance seem awfully strange.
And so it is with rudeness, because while most of us deplore it, research suggests that we also see it as a sign of power. A study published in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science indicated that the ruder someone acts, the more convinced observers become that he or she is powerful, and therefore does not have to respect the same rules the rest of us bow to.

«POP ART IS FOR EVERYONE»

WARHOL AS THE JOKER

A gay guy in a fright wig hangs out with a bored rich girl named “Baby Jane.” It’s not Andy Warhol and Jane Holzer but a story arc on the 1960s TV version of Batman. In two episodes that aired in March 1967, the Joker (Cesar Romero) takes up art and has an unwitting partner in “Baby Jane” Towser. That name can’t be a coincidence: Warhol superstar “Baby Jane” Holzer had already appeared in several Warhol films, notably Batman Dracula (1964), and been profiled by Tom Wolfe. One Batman episode’s title, “Pop Goes the Joker,” is a clear reference to the pop movement.
Despite that, there’s no pop art per se—unless you count a fight-scene title card that rips off Ed Ruscha’s 1962 OOF. It seems the Joker has traditionalist tastes in art (“I swear it on a stack of Blue Boys!”) and covets Renaissance paintings. To get them, he turns to the most monstrous of all cons—contemporary art, naturally. The result, credited to TV writer Stanford Sherman, is a time capsule of middlebrow views on the avant-garde. In a weird way, it can be read as an allegory of postmodernism.

Aug 15 (Reuters) - A decade ago, the questions Annelien Bruins got from clients who wanted help building art collections were about how to find pieces they'd love.
Bruins, an art consultant and chief operating officer of Sarasota, Florida-based Tang Investments LLC, said buying art then was a "passion purchase." Nowadays, it's become more about love and money.
As investors grow frustrated with tepid returns of traditional asset classes, art has become an alluring option, and demand is outstripping supply in the high end of the market.
U.S. billionaire Leon Black, for example, paid an eye-popping $120 million for Edvard Munch's masterpiece "The Scream" in May, according to the Wall Street Journal.

«I LIKE EVERYBODY'S ART»

POST WARHOL PREDICTION: IN THE FUTURE READERS OF THIS BLOG WILL NOT HAVE POSTED ONE SINGLE COMMENT OF APPRECIATION OR ENCOURAGEMENT.

«I JUST READ EVERYTHING»

The spotlight turning back on Haring is a welcome antidote to the concerns of today’s art world, which seems so depressingly obsessed with wealth and power. Haring frequently said that “art is for everybody,” and he meant it. You could see that belief in action in his public works—such as his dynamic Crack Is Wack mural in Harlem River Park—and his crowded Pop Shop, where he sold Haring art that anyone could afford, on buttons, posters, T-shirts, and more. He worked more like a performance artist than a traditional painter, often creating enormous pieces in front of an audience, with a boom box blasting, and he had real faith in art’s ability to transform people’s lives. Anyone, any age, anywhere can understand a Haring. His pared-down, instantly recognizable iconography—from crawling babies to men bedding men—is vibrant with a profound sense of social engagement. Yet it also represents a moving personal and collective journey, especially when it comes to issues of self-acceptance, which were such a big part of the gay movement in the late 70s and early 80s. Perhaps this explains the work’s surprising, haunting beauty. Idealism shines out of every one of Haring’s bold, sure lines—even in one of his last finished paintings, titled Unfinished Painting, which has a vast passage of emptiness, as if to signify all the great work that his death meant he’d never have the chance to do.

WARHOL AND BASQUIAT

One commentator, after seeing the 1985 show at which the Basquiat-and-Warhol's paintings were publicly exhibited for the first time, griped, ''Everything . . . is infused with banality. Who is using whom here?''
Perhaps they were both using—or hoping to benefit from—each other. The godfather of Pop Art was "always seeking the advice and ideas of friends for possible subjects in his art," says Matt Wrbican, chief archivist at The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. "Working with the younger artists such as Basquiat, [Francesco] Clemente, and Haring invigorated his work." What's more, in 1983 Basquiat inspired Warhol to paint "free-hand" with a brush—without using a silkscreen, stencil, or other device—for the first time in more than 20 years.
The younger artist got something out of the relationship too: a parental figure who helped to promote his career and enhance his star quality. But whether Warhol deterred the young painter—who died of a heroin overdose at age 27, in 1988—or helped him to develop his exceptional talent is another question.

«I NEVER READ. I JUST LOOK AT PICTURES»

IMAGINARY DIARIES OF A POP ARTIST

August 13 2012

Gee, these young olympic athletes were so great. I love this new generation. They smoke  pot and then, win medals. How do they do that? And why are they all so good-looking? Went to the office. Worked on my Michael Phelps portrait. And oh, this lesbian writer who loves me so much Camille Paglia will have a new book out in october. Maybe I should do her portrait too. Read an article by a french art critic who said I killed the avant- garde forty years ago. What does that mean?I mean I just wanted to be famous so it was kind of avant- garde back then. Maybe I should just have more sex, so intellectuals would love me more.

«IT'S CALLED GOSSIP AND OF COURSE IT'S AN OBSESSION OF MINE»
