Madonna was a “weirdo” at school, and felt “isolated and alienated” from the other children. The ‘Celebration’ singer spoke out against bullying, when she appeared on ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ on US TV. She told the host how she could sympathise with young people who feel alone, saying: “I can totally relate to the idea of feeling isolated and alienated. I was incredibly lonely as a child, as a teenager. I have to say I never felt like I fit in, in school. I wasn’t a jock. I wasn’t an intellectual. There was no group that I felt a part of. I just felt like a weirdo.”

«POP ART IS FOR EVERYONE»

Robin Hall, the executive producer of the parade, said in a telephone interview that Mr. Murakami was one of a handful of artists Macy’s sought out when it started its series of balloons designed by internationally recognized artists in 2005.
The parade, Mr. Hall said, “is a snapshot of American culture.” While much of its roster is dedicated to readily identifiable figures like SpongeBob SquarePants and Dora the Explorer, he said, “I do believe there’s room in this parade — and have always believed this — for high art.”In that spirit the sculptor Tom Otterness created a Humpty Dumpty balloon for Macy’s in 2005, depicting that nursery-rhyme character suspended upside-down in a perpetual tumble. In 2007 the parade added a shimmering silver rabbit designed by Jeff Koons, and the following year incorporated a giant Keith Haring figure holding up a heart, to mark what would have been the artist’s 50th birthday.

STEVE JOBS AND APPLE COMPUTER (WITH KEITH HARING & ANDY WARHOL)

The Interview was all but complete when I met Jobs at a celebrity-filled birthday party for a youngster in New York City. As the evening progressed, I wandered around to discover that Jobs had gone off with the nine-year-old birthday boy to give him the gift he’d brought from California: a Macintosh computer. As I watched, he showed the boy how to sketch with the machine’s graphics program. Two other party guests wandered into the room and looked over Jobs’s shoulder. ‘Hmmm,’ said the first, Andy Warhol. ‘What is this? Look at this, Keith. This is incredible!’ The second guest, Keith Haring, the graffiti artist whose work now commands huge prices, went over. Warhol and Haring asked to take a turn at the Mac, and as I walked away, Warhol had just sat down to manipulate the mouse. ‘My God!’ he was saying, ‘I drew a circle!’But more revealing was the scene after the party. Well after the other guests had gone, Jobs stayed to tutor the boy on the fine points of using the Mac. Later, I asked him why he had seemed happier with the boy than with the two famous artists. His answer seemed unrehearsed to me: ‘Older people sit down and ask, “What is it?” but the boy asks, “What can I do with it?”‘

IT'S USELESS TO BE YOUNG WITHOUT BEING BEAUTIFUL AND VICE VERSA....

«THINGS SHOULD BE MORE SEXUAL»

Penthouse, started by Bob Guccione in England in 1965, took a different approach. Women looked indirectly at the camera, as if they were going about their private idylls. This change of emphasis was influential in erotic depictions of women. Penthouse was also the first magazine to publish pictures that included pubic hair and full frontal nudity, both of which were considered beyond the bounds of the erotic and in the realm of pornography at the time. In the late 1960s, magazines began to move into more explicit displays often focusing on the buttocks as standards of what could be legally depicted and what readers wanted to see changed. By the 1970s, they were focusing on the pubic area and eventually, by the 1990s, featured sexual penetration, lesbianism and homosexuality, group sex, masturbation, and fetishes in the more hard-core magazines such as Hustler.Magazines for every taste and fetish were soon created due to the low cost of producing them. Magazines for the gay community flourished, the most notable and one of the first being Physique Pictorial, started in 1951 by Bob Mizer when his attempt to sell the services of male models; however, Athletic Model Guild photographs of them failed. It was published in black and white, in a very clear yet photographic manner celebrating the male form and was published for nearly 50 years. The magazine was innovative in its use of props and costumes to depict the now standard gay icons like cowboys, gladiators and sailors.

Richard’s Interview covers made him a magnet. Henry Geldzahler, (the late, wildly influential Metropolitan Museum of Art curator, critic and public official whose  name was synonymous with the art scene in New York for three decades, the man who influenced and publicized the careers of painters like Willem de Kooning, Jasper Johns, Larry Rivers, Frank Stella, Andy Warhol, and David Hockney said of Richard: ‘…Take his Interview (Magazine) covers, for instance, for which he(Richard) gained his greatest notice, the difficulty there was to stand in for Andy Warhol’s own trademarked portrait style without either betraying it or parodying it. It is exactly this ‘difficulty,’ this conundrum that Richard faces so successfully. His Interview cover paintings quote Warhol’s style without aping it...’

ROY Lichtenstein's 1964 painting Ohhh … Alright … has sold for a record $US42.6 million, soaring past his previous auction peak of $16.3 million. The late pop artist's comic-strip-inspired rendering of a pouty redhead, once owned by actor and art collector Steve Martin, was sold by American casino magnate Steve Wynn. The painting comes from a series of breakthrough works Lichtenstein created using images from comic books. Many of the paintings feature stock female types, often paired with a dialogue bubble. Though the work was an instant commercial hit, with the $US4000 canvases flying off the walls at New York's Leo Castelli Gallery, the artist's brazenly banal subject matter and mechanical Benday-dot style irked the mainstream. In 1964, Life magazine ran an article about Lichtenstein headlined: ''Is he the worst artist in the US?''

«I JUST READ EVERYTHING»

In market terms, there are Pop Art works important for their rarity, originality or quality, such as Warhol's giant prints of Marilyn, Elvis and Mao, and his car crash pictures or Lichtenstein's comic-book paintings. But much of what one might call the diffusion market in contemporary art seems to rest on the taste of a very few collectors, such as Peter Brant, Philippe Niarchos and Steve Wynn, and on dealers, such as Larry Gagosian and Jose Mugrabi, who are strongly committed to particular artists. Indeed, Mr. Mugrabi, who sold "Men in Her Life" on Monday, bought a "Jackie" for $1.65 million and a "Marilyn" for $4.45 million later in the week. Such "support" has been likened to dollar-averaging in equities or as an indication of faith that the work and its value will endure and grow; the more cynical see it as a deliberate distortion of the market. Whether Pop Art remains the gold standard of the art world, or collapses like the subprime-mortgage market, it has become what Warhol prophesied and intended: the dominant global consumer brand. Will it be as enduring as Campbell's Soup or Coca-Cola? Time will tell

The contemporary art world was taken by storm this week after paintings by pop artists Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein battled it out at Christie's and Sotheby's in New York City. Not only did Lichtenstein's "Ohhh...Alright..." comic strip painting of a redhead woman clutching a phone sell at $42.6 million, but it also trumped earlier in the week.  Once owned by actor Steve Martin, the 1964 painting was sold on Wednesday night by Las Vegas Casino resort developer Steve Wynn to an anonymous woman on the telephone. The Lichtenstein sale also smashed a previous record for Lichtenstein set in 2005, when his work In the Car fetched $16.2m. Other highlights from the week include the sale of Lichtenstein's 1972 "Still Life with Palette" and "Girl in Mirror" paintings where telephone bidders paid $6.8 million and $4.8 million, respectively.

Artwork by Damien Hirst

«GOOD BUSINESS IS THE BEST ART»

NEW YORK — Pop art mainstay Roy Lichtenstein's painting "Ohhh... Alright..." has sold at Christie's in New York for a record 42.6 million dollars. The oil and magna on canvas, painted in 1964, set a new high for the much sought-after artist, whose previous record price was 16.2 million dollars back in 2005. The cartoon-style painting, featuring a close-up of a beautiful young woman holding a telephone and saying in a speech bubble, "Ohhh... Alright...," went to an anonymous phone bidder, Christie's said. "'Ohhh...Alright...' characterizes the Lichtenstein's captivation and inspiration with techniques of commercial printing and reproduction articulated in his signature Ben-Day dots," Christie's said. The sale was the star of the contemporary auction held at Christie's the day after rival Sotheby's sold an Andy Warhol painting titled "Large Coca Cola" for 35.3 million dollars.Christie's hotly anticipated sale of another Andy Warhol, "Big Campbell's Soup Can with Can Opener (Vegetable)," proved a disappointment. It had been expected to sell for between 30 and 50 million dollars, but eventually went for 23.8 million dollars.

And there's so much more. The global environmental consequences of Chinese industrialization are troubling, the apparent determination of China to play strategic mercantilist games with key natural resources is provocative, and the difficulty, historically speaking, that reigning great powers have often encountered when coming to terms with rising contenders is unsettling. The world is being remade before our eyes, and massive transitions are never easy. And yet the sight of hundreds of millions of people emerging from backbreaking poverty and joining the party that the West has been throwing ever since the Industrial Revolution is an amazing, inspiring triumph. China's had a hard couple of centuries -- but finally, nearly a quarter of the world's population is in the middle of a major status upgrade. It's long overdue, and the contributions to science and literature and art that will be made by these newly affluent billions is something that we should be excited about, instead of fearful.

According to Brett Gorvy, deputy chairman of Christie's, the top of the contemporary art market is "conservative" and "focused on quality". He explained: "There is no difference from the move to buying gold, in a way: people are being drawn to things whose value is tried and tested."Whereas the boom up to 2006 and 2007 saw speculation on new names, buyers are now attracted to 20th-century art history."Pop is the overriding movement at the moment," said Gorvy. "Warhol is huge, and Lichtenstein is globally popular."The star of Christie's New York sale is a Roy Lichtenstein canvas. The star at Sotheby's is a Coca-Cola bottle by Andy Warhol with an estimate of $20m-$25m.Part of the point is that pop art can transcend cultural boundaries and appeal to an international audience; the art embodies clear, simple messages. "It is very instant in terms of understanding," said Gorvy.
