THOSE GREAT RICHARD BERNSTEIN COVERS

Richard’s Interview covers made him a magnet. Henry Geldzahler, (the late, wildly influential Metropolitan Museum of Art curator, critic and public official whose  name was synonymous with the art scene in New York for three decades, the man who influenced and publicized the careers of painters like Willem de Kooning, Jasper Johns, Larry Rivers, Frank Stella, Andy Warhol, and David Hockney said of Richard: ‘…Take his Interview (Magazine) covers, for instance, for which he(Richard) gained his greatest notice, the difficulty there was to stand in for Andy Warhol’s own trademarked portrait style without either betraying it or parodying it. It is exactly this ‘difficulty,’ this conundrum that Richard faces so successfully. His Interview cover paintings quote Warhol’s style without aping it...’
