«GOOD BUSINESS IS THE BEST ART»

In the audience sat the men of the Mugrabi family — the patriarch Jose and his sons, Alberto and David — New York art dealers for whom the evening was not so much a transitional moment as simply another high-stakes day at the office. The Mugrabis own what is believed to be one of the largest and most valuable private collections of art in the world. By their estimate, it includes more than 3,000 works. They have built the collection over the past 25 years, since Jose, an Israeli-born fabric merchant who raised the family in Colombia, moved his wife, Mary, and their two sons to America and got into the art business full time.

The core of their collection is a staggering 800 works by Andy Warhol — “easily the biggest Warhol collection in the world after ours,” says Tom Sokolowski, the director of the vast Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh — and roughly 100 each by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Tom Wesselmann and George Condo. At 69, Jose remains largely interested in artists with connections to the Pop movement.

SHOWING OFF FOR 15 MINUTES OF FAME

“IT'S CALLED GOSSIP AND OF COURSE IT'S AN OBSESSION OF MINE”

Big Movie years will come again, but never again will the Oscars provide a thrilling, once-a-year-only unmediated peek into the lives of Hollywood royalty.Back when the likes of Jack Nicholson and Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway reigned over the event, the Oscars were the pinnacle of celebrity culture – not that such a concept had even been invented yet. Now we have armies of prying, sanctimonious celebrity magazine editors who revel in exposing stars’ foibles and creating insta-narratives out of their everyday ups and downs. We have thuggish teams of paparazzi to provide the anywhere-any-time photographic goods. We have obsessive, lightning-fast bloggers who live to express their instantly formed opinions on celebrities’ choices in fashion and romance. When don’t we see Hollywood unmediated? It just may be that the “celebrities without makeup” movement killed the Oscars. That unglorious historical march was begun by Bonnie Fuller, when she turned Us Weekly from an earnest Hollywood-publicist-approved profile magazine into the latest word on which Oscar-winning actress has cellulite, which up-and-comer holds a Starbucks with one hand while pushing a stroller with the other.

“IT'S CALLED GOSSIP AND OF COURSE IT'S AN OBSESSION OF MINE”

It looks like people are finally catching on: Porn sells! In their latest ads for their jeans, Rufskin Denim prominently features Johnny Hazzard—looking as delicious as ever—modeling their new Press-On Stretch denim jeans as if he's posing for a Rascal Video shoot. But Johnny's not the only triple-X stud featured in the campaign: Black Scorpion exclusive (and upcoming Men magazine cover stud) D.O. and RandyBlue's Leo Giamani both get dressed up—or down, as the case may be.
Now that gay porn stars are making the jump to modeling clothes, it can't be all that long before they're hawking detergents, breath fresheners and Preparation-H. We can see it now: "Hi, I'm Johnny Hazzard. I'm not a doctor, but I have given a lot of oral exams..."

BRIGID BERLIN

The Andy Warhol Museum has just opened a delightful little exhibition titled "Breaking News: Brigid Berlin, A Retrospective."
This small retrospective of Warhol's closest friend and self-appointed social outcast, and the work she created from the 1960s to the present, includes her early Polaroids, handmade "trip books" and "black books," tape recordings, audio recordings and recent needlepoints that depict sensationalist covers of the New York Post, New York Daily News and Newsweek.Berlin, 69, is the daughter of Richard Berlin, who was the director of the Hearst empire for 52 years. She was raised in New York's elite social circles. Persecuted by her socialite mother who was overly concerned with what everyone else thought of her overweight daughter, Berlin came to shun the upper crust at an early age.

Lou Reed wrote the Velvet Underground song “Candy Says” with her in mind and included a verse about her in his “Walk on the Wild Side.”And she inspired Jeremiah Newton, now the film, television and video liaison at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, to begin assembling the only known archive of items associated with Candy Darling, including diaries, letters, photographs and her cremated remains. After providing the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh with part of the collection a year and a half ago, Mr. Newton delivered the rest of the items last week.

«GOOD BUSINESS IS THE BEST ART»

The world may be embroiled in a crippling credit crisis, but that didn't stop collectors from paying record prices at what Christie's is calling the "sale of the century." The auction house brought in $262 million in its first night of the three day sale of Yves Saint Laurent and partner Pierre Berge's 733-piece art collection. During the sale's first night, collectors acted as if they were dancing on the Titanic, paying record prices for Brancusi, Matisse and Mondrian. A three-foot Brancusi wooden sculpture went for $36,792,835 (realized price without fees). The most recent Brancusi record was for "Bird in Space" which sold for $27.4 million in 2005. Other sales records from the night:

HENRI MATISSE Les coucous, tapis bleu et rose: $45,264,579

Confirming their reputation for stylishness and modernity, Barack and Michelle Obama are searching for paintings by living artists to hang in their private quarters in the White House. The Sunday Times has learnt that the works that have caught their eye include paintings by Jasper Johns, best known for his iconic 1950s images of the American flag, and Ed Ruscha, one of the originators of pop art, which belong to the National Gallery in Washington. The final selection has not been made yet, but paintings by the late Robert Rauschenberg, a sometime lover of Jasper Johns who died aged 82 last year, are also under consideration.

The comments from David Nahmad, a Monaco-based dealer who is possibly the biggest in the world, come as art buyers reel from the collapse of the contemporary market...Mr Nahmad, who is reputed to have a £2bn collection of some 5,000 paintings, including 300 Picassos, told The Independent on Sunday: “There are a lot of embarrassed people who bought art that is now not worth what they paid for it. For the past three or four years it’s been a very, very thin market, with just two or three buyers pushing up prices by bidding against each other.“Unfortunately, a lot of people knew the game. So those people who did not know are realising it now. It’s almost a fraud. I would never advise my clients to buy contemporary art.”

Mr Nahmad and his family have made billions of dollars trading art. They specialise in the works of great modern artists such as Picasso, Matisse and Rothko. He added that he doesn’t think any artist since Francis Bacon had pushed art forward. The last notable artists were Lucio Fontana and Yves Klein, he said. “There is the real art market, with real artists, and then there is the stupid art market which uses publicity to make some artists become very expensive. That doesn’t mean they are good. Damien Hirst’s diamond skull at $100m was a stupid thing; $100m is an offence. Hirst started with $10,000 – that’s OK. But $100m? That’s ridiculous.”

Worked till 8;00 on my 13 year old dad portrait and decided to watch TV after. And there was Edmund White talking about his book about Rimbaud. And oh, everybody is talking about that model who fell on the runway. They should have a show of only models falling on the runway one after another. His thoughts and perceptions about mass production, the commercialization of art, the repetition of images in media and the very nature of fame and celebrity framed" modern American culture. Even though he is very much of a certain time and place, says Kristen Evangelista, associate curator at the San Jose Museum of Art, "his work appeals to people of all ages."

Fascination with the famous seems to be a human phenomenon that goes as far back as recorded history. In ancient Greece and Rome, people created their gods as very human-like beings, complete with character flaws and drama. Through the Middle Ages, the celebrities were royalty and nobility. When Madame Tussaud opened her wax museum in 1835, it was a huge hit, with people lining up simply to look at the visages of famous people. Humans are captivated by those they see as glamorous. We build up myths about humanized images, or people, and then observe their every move, looking to expose every shred of humanity inside them.

“IT'S CALLED GOSSIP AND OF COURSE IT'S AN OBSESSION OF MINE”

Barack Obama was sworn in on 20 January with a historic mandate for change. Extraordinary times call for bold actions and visionary ideas. Big government is back. Hopes are for an administration that is not only more progressive, but also smarter.
This could be good news for the arts—as long as they can build a convincing case that they serve the public interest. Long banished to the periphery of public affairs, arts policy is poised to make a comeback under various 21st-century guises: from economic stimulus programmes to “soft diplomacy” initiatives to digital-age intellectual property regulation. The opportunity to rethink government’s role comes at a time when it is readily acknowledged among arts professionals that cultural support in America is outdated in its assumptions, sclerotic in its methods, biased in its outcomes, and inefficient in its use of philanthropic and taxpayer dollars. It’s time to move on.

Such strong reactions are a function of the failing economy, the anonymity provided by the Internet, and the sense of community created by having one's feelings supported by others, says Dr. Jeff Gardere, a psychologist who has appeared on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and "The View." "We all look for diversions," Gardere says, "especially now in this very tough economy. We need things that take our mind off of our problem. We get into this hero worship or hero hating, villain hating, with a lot of these pop culture so-called icons. They can be so irrelevant whether we like them or hate them. We allow ourselves those types of emotions without feeling guilty about it."
