«BEAUTY IS A SIGN OF INTELLIGENCE»

«MORE THAN ANYTHING PEOPLE JUST WANT STARS»

Britney is still the most talked about celeb, according to USA Today. Personal troubles or no, Britney Spears is still the hottest human being on Planet Earth, according to USA Today's annual Celebrity Heat Index, which measures how much exposure a star gets in print and online. Brit got more media attention than anyone else for 11 weeks this year, meaning she earned the top spot on the index for the second year in a row. That coverage included everything from her infamous breakdown last January to her best-selling album, just released on Dec. 2. It's just another feather in Britney's cap, following her selection by People readers as having the "best comeback" of 2008 as well as being the "most talked about celebrity."

PHILOSOPHY FOR THE 21st CENTURY: POETRY

With its ideas of instantaneity, juxtaposition of seemingly disparate elements & flash ever present in today's pop culture and music videos, poetry is once again the most relevant art form in the 21st century.

Dec. 31 (Bloomberg) -- Damien Hirst’s record “Beautiful Inside My Head Forever” sale and collapse of Lehman Brothers Inc. in September marked the turning of the art market in 2008.The financial-market rout curtailed spending by U.S. and European art collectors. Falling commodity and equity prices suppressed demand from buyers from the emerging economies of Russia and the Middle East. In 2007, Sotheby’s and Christie’s International’s regular mixed-owner sales of contemporary art in New York and London totaled a record $2.4 billion with fees. This year, because of a slowing of demand in the final quarter, the equivalent auctions totaled less than $2 billion, a decline of 17 percent, according to figures compiled by Bloomberg News.

«WASTING MONEY PUTS YOU IN A REAL PARTY MOOD» -ANDY WARHOL

So Madoff got the brilliant idea to start a money management business on the side. He didn't charge any fees, explaining that he would just make money trading stocks on the securities side of the business. Merrill Lynch (nyse: MER - news - people ) and every retail brokerage player perfected this business model years ago--it's called churning. And the gerries fell for it. Now, all of a sudden, Madoff is a macher (a big shot, a mover). The ability to make someone money moves you to the top of the cocktail-party list. Madoff didn't advertise; he kept it exclusive, adding to its mystery and allure. And he didn't swing for the fences, he "produced" tortoise-like (steady) returns: 13.72% one year, 9.82% another. Goldilocks-esque. Not too hot or cold, just right. It became known as the "Jewish T bill." Never mind that his option split strike conversion strategy was completely bogus.

MADONNA'S toy-boy lover has a randy secret - he starred in a Brazilian porn flick just weeks before they met. British tabloid the Daily Star revealed model Jesus Luz, 20, played a boozed-up jilted boyfriend in the sizzling cable telemovie in which three hot babes act out viewers' fantasies. Luz featured as Diogo, who is taken to a house party by his girlfriend but passes out on a chair after drinking too much. Once the party ends, his frustrated lover starts flirting with another man - and the action goes on from there. Director Candé Salles said: "He acted very well. He is excellent." Luz and Madonna, 50, reportedly met on the Brazilian leg of the singer's Sticky & Sweet tour.

According to Forrester Research, Web users spent about $1.3 billion on online porn in 1999. That represented about 8 percent of all Net commerce that year, and more money than people spent online on books or plane tickets. Back then, it was the Internet's leading industry. By 2006, however, Net porn was generating just $2.8 billion in revenues--a much smaller piece of the online pie, which had grown to $150 to $200 billion.

Two-thirds of the 1,125 billionaires on Forbes' 2008 list are self-made, many from backgrounds as modest as (George) Soros'...It's hard to believe that media mogul Oprah Winfrey was born impoverished in rural Mississippi. When her parents split, she shuttled between various households, at one point living on a pig farm.Despite the fractured family, Winfrey excelled in school. She set her sights on a career in media and never looked back. She started working as a radio DJ while still in high school. At 19, she began anchoring a local Nashville news show. In 1984, she moved to Chicago to host a morning talk show. Her ability to empathize with guests and her accessible demeanor made her a hit. Now her work airs in 135 countries and draws 46 million viewers a week in the US alone. Thanks to its success and other media ventures, including a magazine, Forbes estimates Winfrey's net worth at $2.5 billion. Not bad for a farm girl from Mississippi.

HOW EMPTY GOSSIP IS KILLING CELEBRITY GOSSIP CULTURE

By late December, even celeb site Jossip raised the white flag in a post called, "Gossip's Dead and It's Everyone's Fault." The item offered a brief summation of the fallen soldiers on the field: "Ben Widdicombe was the first to go, ankling his post as the New York Daily News' most respected gossip columnist. Next were Rush & Molloy, the married gossips who since 1995 had also penned a column for the Daily News -- they wanted to focus on other stories for the paper. Then Jo Piazza, whose scuttlebutt replaced Widdicombe's, quit, too. Jossip's gossip-oriented sister site Mollygood shut down, much like the short-lived PageSix.com before it. Also, tabloid sales continued to shrink." Layoffs hit Gawker and its sister site Jezebel. TMZ, which had so zealously launched its own TV show in 2007, ended the year with a decrease in readership -- a rare occurrence online, where new users appear by the minute. It seemed deeply symbolic when Mr. Blackwell -- the bitchy tabloid queen responsible for "The Worst Dressed List," a Schadenfreude tradition that gave birth to a gazillion "fashion police" -- passed away in October. It was fitting, almost. The end of an era. Or, depending on your perspective -- an error.

HOW TO MARKET A NEW MUSIC STAR IN THE 21st CENTURY

Santa Barbara-born songbird Katy Perry shot from obscurity to notoriety this year, thanks to her breakout hit “I Kissed a Girl.” But Perry’s bi-curious lyrics alone didn’t make her a star. Her flamboyant style of dress (skimpy retro) also helped distinguish her from a sea of pop princesses. Perry's rise to stardom, however, was not without controversy. The lyrics to both of Perry’s hits -- "Ur So Gay" and "I Kissed a Girl” – incensed some listeners. With lyrics like, “You need SPF 45 just to stay alive / You’re so gay and you don’t even like boys," they asked, was Perry rebelling against gender stereotypes, or reinforcing them?

THE MERGER OF HIGH AND LOW CULTURE

Behind all these cultural trends lies a clear demographic factor: more of us are going to university than ever before. We may fritter away much of our time while we're there, standing in the students' union bar drinking subsidised beer, but at the very least those years plant a seed of curiosity and a sense of possibility. Twenty-five years on, several of my contemporaries are now going back to university for more. Kingsley Amis famously said that in higher education more would mean worse. In fact, more has meant less of the sort of snobbery that he was displaying by saying that. Studies have shown that today's graduates are cultural omnivores, able to enjoy high and pop culture alike. Which is where dumbing down gets it wrong. Catchy as it is, the phrase has a certain dumbness built into it. The real story is more complex and more heartening.

PERSONNALY I LOVED PORNO AND I BOUGHT LOTS OF IT ALL THE TIME" -ANDY WARHOL

Only a couple of years ago, 80 percent of a porn producer’s income came from DVD sales. Today, it’s down about 30 percent.  And some speculate that sales could flat line in only a couple of years. While porn consumers are on the rise; porn profits are tanking... Over the last 10 years numerous upstart production houses have cut into the porn pie leaving an ever-smaller pie to go around. But the bigger problem is American households are using broadband connections to the Internet in ever increasing numbers.  47% at last count and that number will continue to grow exponentially.   This brings the immediate gratification of porn to hungry consumers via the web.  Streaming media and download to own capability have choked the life out of the DVD.  I mean, who schleps down to the local adult video store to buy or rent anymore?  No one I know. And while sales of internet-based adult entertainment grew 14 percent last year, to a whooping $2.8 billion, that figure would be substantially higher if there wasn’t for all the free competition.

FROM STAR TO STARLETTE TO....???

Stars like Madonna, Gwen Stefani, and Beyoncé established their identities first in one field (both in music) before branching off into others. They have one primary identity, with their other endeavours seen as side projects or supplementary.
New stars, however, who try to branch out too early run into the problem of weighing down their still-developing identities with numerous careers and products that are contingent on their identity as a brand. They may confuse their audiences by fracturing their identities. A prime example is Jessica Simpson. Simpson began by releasing a pop album, but then reached greater success with a reality TV show. She also released product lines, tried to crossover into acting, and gained more fame through headlines in celebrity gossip columns.Meanwhile, her subsequent albums and singles failed to become significant hits. Her songs most likely won’t be remembered, and there isn’t a signature tune that can be easily associated with her. Even her pop identity was somewhat unclear: was she a balladeer? Wholesome wait-until-marriage virginal popster? Or Britney Spears pop-tart knock-off?

In the summer of 1961 he travelled to America, where he met Andy Warhol and Dennis Hopper and was drawn into the lively gay scene. He eventually settled in Santa Monica, California. His work became more naturalistic and less "modern".He is now based back in the UK in East Yorkshire and, in the past few years, has turned his attention to oil landscapes.

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — Madonna is causing "crazy enthusiasm" and "impure thoughts" on her first concert visit to Chile, a prominent retired cardinal complained on Wednesday, as he paused in a tribute to a late dictator to denounce the pop star.
Roman Catholic Cardinal Jorge Medina criticized the flamboyant singer during his homily at a Mass in honor of the late dictator Augusto Pinochet, who oversaw the deaths of some 3,200 dissidents during his 1973-1990 rule. "This woman comes here and in an incredibly shameless manner, she provokes a crazy enthusiasm, an enthusiasm of lust, lustful thoughts, impure thoughts," said Medina, the cardinal who was chosen to announce the election of Pope Benedict XVI

«Another hot-button issue: After California voters adopted Proposition 8, which amended the state Constitution to prohibit gay marriage, gay activists have launched a program of open confrontation with and intimidation of religious believers, mainly Mormons. I thought we'd gotten over the adolescent tantrum phase of gay activism, typified by ACT UP's 1989 invasion of St. Patrick's Cathedral, where the communion host was thrown on the floor. Want to cause a nice long backlash to gay rights? That's the way to do it. I may be an atheist, but I respect religion and certainly find it far more philosophically expansive and culturally sustaining than the me-me-me sense of foot-stamping entitlement projected by too many gay activists in the unlamented past.»

TWENTY YEARS LATER THE DEBATE CONTINUES...

For 25 years he functioned in the art world as the indispensable irritant - the ubiquitous nuisance by which all other artists redefined themselves, whether in disgust and disdain or with a certain wry astonishment. Sometimes his work was too silly even to think about, but there were many occasions on which the loudest noise you could hear in the gallery was that of the sawdust falling out of a familiar stuffed shirt. As to the meaning (or lack of meaning) of his work, every imaginable opinion has been held, expressed and defended. As to his personality, and as to his impact upon his times -there, too, all positions have been manned. There were those who never varied and saw him from start to finish as a self-promoting trickster, a pseudo-artist who corrupted the young, fouled the very notion of high art, manipulated the market, went along with the media and was triviality personified.

AMERICA'S POP PRINCESS

NEW YORK (AP) — Britney Spears' latest CD, "Circus," has landed her back at a familiar position — No. 1. The singer's comeback CD — actually, make that her second comeback CD — will top the album charts next week, according to her label, Jive. Though Nielsen SoundScan does not release its official figures until Wednesday, estimates have the record selling as many as 500,000 copies in its first week of release."This is going to reinforce her icon status," said Barry Weiss, chairman and CEO of the BMG Label Group, which includes Spears' label. "It's not just a No. 1 album."
Indeed, it's not. For Spears, who has rebounded after a disastrous year that included rehab, a custody battle for her two sons and court-ordered supervision by her father, it is another step in her bid to reclaim her status among pop's elite.
"At the end of the day, I think she is America's pop princess, and the world's pop princess, and this just reconfirms it to everyone who doubted it," said her manager, Larry Rudolph.

DUMBING DOWN À LA HOLLYWOOD

Jennifer Aniston is tired of talking about Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie and John Mayer and whether or not she is pregnant. She would be happy to talk about the thing that pays her bills, however."I think it's ridiculous. There's just this insatiable need," she tells USA Today. She hopes "Marley & Me," her new film, "is going to create something else to talk about and [for people to] realize that I have a job and I'm an actress."I am honestly getting sick of it, and I feel like telling people, 'You know what? It's none of your [expletive] business.' Seriously, it's enough," says Aniston, who openly talked about Jolie and Pitt and boyfriend Mayer in December's Vogue. "It's like we're appealing to the lowest."

MUSIC AS ART

Everyone knows about Andy Warhol's connection to music, but only now has it been brought together in one volume - Andy Warhol: The Record Covers, 1949-1987 by Paul Marechal. Everyone from Count Basie, Tchaikovsky, Aretha Franklin through to Lou Reed, Diana Ross, John Lennon and the Rolling Stones have benefitted from Warhol covers - in fact, 50 covers were actually produced by the man, all reproduced here (front and back) alongside over 100 additional illustrations, related works and background.

GETTING HIS 15 MINUTES OF FAME

It was an emotional end to an exhausting and exhilarating nine weeks as 24-year-old Nico Archambault was named "Canada's Favourite Dancer" on last night's much-anticipated season finale of So You Think You Can Dance Canada. The announcement was accompanied by an ear-splitting standing ovation and the boom of confetti cannons, with Archambault's returning Top 20 competitors hoisting him high above their heads – just the sort of thing you would expect dancers to do.Audience favourite Archambault, a contemporary dancer from Quebec, is just the sort of guy you would expect to win – voted into the top spot by more than three million calls from an audience of roughly half that number.

WARHOL'S LOVER

Penn State Altoona's Sundance Film Series will offer "A Walk Into the Sea: Danny Williams and the Warhol Factory" on Friday, December 12 at 7 p.m. in room 150 of the Hawthorn Building.Director Esther Robinson's personal inquiry into the truth behind her Uncle Danny Williams' mysterious 1966 disappearance. Virtually unknown today, Danny was Andy Warhol's lover, and a promising young filmmaker. The discovery of 20 never-before-seen films William's made during his time at the Factory-- and whose many subjects include Andy Warhol, Edie Sedgwick, Paul Morrissey, Brigid Berlin, Billy Name and what may be the earliest known footage of the Velvet Underground- reveals a luminous talent and a stark gap in the historical record.

FUCKING FOR 15 MINUTES..(I MEAN TWO YEARS) OF FAME

A new series on here!TV, John Roecker's Everything You Wanted to Know About Gay Porn Stars *but were afraid to ask, is an intimate, brave and frequently witty exploration inside the heads of 16 male erotic video performers, many with well-known nom de porns: Johnny Hazzard, Brad Benton, Nick Capra and Jason Ridge.

David Lamble: What would you say is the average career length of a gay porn actor in today's industry?

John Roecker: It's five years, and then you're out.

Nick Capra: Five years! That's pushing it. I would say two years if you look at how long it takes the average porn star to go up, plateau, then be written off. I don't know many porn stars who have been around for five years.

Roecker: You have.

Capra: I'm in a rare percentage. If you look at the people who become huge stars, their descent into drugs and the drug culture, and into self-destructive things is what they transition to. I don't think a whole lot of them transition into a masters degree.

ART BASEL MIAMI

New Here in Miami, a small sign in the art-fair booth of the Coplan Gallery, a local photo gallery, says it all “20% discount … Five for $12,000.” It’s Kmart special time at Art Basel Miami and its satellite fairs...At many booths, $30,000 seems to be a magic number, as if all the art dealers in the world had met secretly at Sant Ambroeus to decide that would be the starting price point of the year for wealthy collectors. A Zurich gallery is offering Karl Lagerfeld’s photographs of Jeff Koons and his exhibition at Versailles for $30,000 at the main fair. At rival Art Miami, large Ellsworth Kelly prints are popular in that price range. For $30,000, collectors can buy one of 100 huge, gleaming cobalt-blue bubbles by leading Chinese contemporary artist Ai Wei Wei.

THE NEW PARISIENNE

According to the press release, Marc Jacobs, designer of the 2009 ready-to-wear collection, "knew exactly who he wanted to embody the spirit of the season." Dressed in little else besides mesh stockings and high stilettos and sitting in a smoky, old-fashioned Parisian bar with the latest Vuitton "it" bags, Madonna is intended to embody Jacobs' "vision of the quintessential Parisienne." He says, "I wanted the campaign to be very bold, very sensual and very atmospheric. To carry this off, we needed the ultimate performer -- and for me, that is Madonna."

JASPER JOHNS

Pleasure is something you receive from an artwork; beauty is a quality intrinsic to it. Art can be pleasurable to look at without being beautiful. I am moved to these thoughts by an unglamorous but very pleasurable exhibition at the Princeton University Art Museum. “Jasper Johns: Light Bulb” looks at the role that a simple object, the incandescent light bulb, has played in the work of the artist, who is now 78.

YouTube just released new rules about what it considers "sexually suggestive" videos that are comical in their prudishness. Besides nudity and actual sex, videos may be age-restricted if they “feature individuals in minimal or revealing clothing... [or] if they're intended to elicit a sexual response.” Other considerations? Whether breasts, buttocks, or genitals are the "focal point" of the video. So much for the BootyTown Channel. Whether the video is set in a location "associated with sexual activity, such as a bed." Because as we all know, people only have sex in bed. Poses intended to sexually arouse the viewer. I dunno; that upavistha januparivrttasana yoga position always gets me hot. Actions that suggest "a willingness to engage in sexual activity." Ideally, both the video's creators and its viewers will have been married to each other for at least 10 years, so the issue will never come up. Minimal clothing is acceptable, but only in appropriate contexts. That micro-thong bikini? No sweat if you're poolside, but better grab a towel before you step inside the kitchen.

IMAGINARY DIARIES OF A POP ARTIST: MODELS

Dec 6 2008

Gee, this young male model Kerry Degman came to the office to have his portrait done. It's great because he was discovered when dropping off his sister at her modeling agency. He could really be big in Paris. I mean all the old fairies over there always have that fantasy about all-american boys who grew on breakfast cereal in Iowa or South Dakota. Or maybe it's just because of all those Bruce Weber photos. I don't know. All Lindsay Lohan's friends says it's just a matter of time before she start dating men again. She should be doing like ELLEN. You can only be famous and lesbian if the girl you're dating is better-looking than you so straight men can relate and support you. Why is she killing her career doing the reverse? I don't understand. And, oh, Britney is bigger than ever now. She's really going to have a long career like Madonna. She just have a huge teenage girls and gay fan base. I mean she goes on stage with Madonna, she had kids with a guy who dressed like a whigger and looked like a rough trade gay porn fantasy and some young fairy cried for her on You Tube. All her image is about that great female star double T thing: teeth and tits. That's a great american image.

Paris Hilton is reportedly lined up to appear in a live version of "Peter Pan."Hilton has impressed bosses at Disney with her movie roles and her online comedy sketches, according to New York Post gossip column Page Six. And now they are said to be keen for Hilton to bring the fairy Tinkerbell to life in a live-action version of the story. A source tells the Web site, "Paris has worked on her acting chops lately and showed some comedy prowess in her YouTube spoof of running for president. Disney suits saw it and think she may be developing some comedic-actress potential."

ART AND THE MONEY GAME

Comparing our All Art Index against the S&P 500 (with dividends reinvested) from 1958 through Oct. 31, 2008, shows that stocks have beaten art for the past quarter-century but have done worse than art for the past half-century. Also worth noting, if you think of art as pure investment rather than enjoyment, is that insurance, capital gains tax and transaction costs are much higher on art.

MAKING MONEY IS ART

Speaking of pennies, Walter Husak had some. And now he has even more after selling his collection of 301 rare American pennies for $10.7 million earlier this year. The highest bids were on two large antique "coppers" from 1793 and 1814, fetching $632,500 each. Husak decided it was time to cash out when the only pennies he had not acquired carried price tags of more than $700,000.

«WOMEN IN REVOLT» FOR THE 21st CENTURY

Women make up only 2 percent of the country's top management positions and only 17 percent of Parliament -- a smaller percentage than in both Rwanda and Burundi -- and recent opinion polls show that the No. 1 role model for Italian girls is the showgirl. A number of Italian feminists are placing a substantial portion of the blame on the prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi, who is also a media mogul. Apparently the dwindling amount of clothing on television's females coincides with the launch of the Berlusconi networks themselves, known for their strange mingling of politics and sex. And Berlusconi recently raised eyebrows by appointing former showgirl Mara Carfagna as minister of equal opportunity. Said veteran feminist Grazia Francescato: "We have gone from equal opportunities to equal opportunism ... You try to be very appealing to the other sex, especially to very powerful men. I am very, very disappointed by women."

“MORE THAN ANYTHING PEOPLE JUST WANT STARS” -ANDY WARHOL

IT'S BRITNEY BITCH!

Since the dawn of pop music, what lone trait is shared by all the great pop stars who’ve lodged themselves in the public’s imagination? Every single one of them ends up, often unwittingly, reflecting a moment in time back to the public at large. Elvis? The rise of rock’n’roll and the advent of the teenager. Dylan? The early days of the protest movement. Madonna? Take your pick. She’s just as much a byword for western meritocracies and the stress they place on individual success as she is a defining symbol of the 80s ‘me’ decade. Britney? Extreme exhibitionism. ...It’s little wonder that even when she attempted to escape the cameras, she also played intentional games of cat and mouse with the rabid media and went so far as to date one of the paparazzi tailing her. Even her much touted recovery and come-back, which has occurred at a hyper speed we’ve only become accustomed to since the internet went from a novel indulgence to being viewed as a human right, has been followed by a documentary film crew for the past few months.
