Two very different events opening in Melbourne next week have interesting takes on this. Sydney-based artist Hazel Dooney has a photography exhibition called Porno opening at MARS Gallery, and AFI winner Bojana Novakovic has directed a Serbian play called Fake Porno, on at Lupa gallery. Interestingly, both Porno, and Fake Porno use the notion of pornography to explore intimacy. "I wanted to present an alternative", says Dooney, whose sometimes explicit photographs are of herself, her lovers, and friends and their lovers. "I've called the exhibition Porno because I wanted to show that the word itself is no longer taboo; it now hints at the socially acceptable. Making a sex video is now a career move, as is being photographed getting out of a car with no underpants on.

There may be too many celebrity lists, but there's only one Will Smith. Smith is the kind of performer that fans love to love, playing big, affirmative characters who seem to match the person he is in real life. "It's just Will Smith every time you see him," says Ellis Cashmore, author of Celebrity Culture. "That's a supposed part of the secret of remaining on the A list--to imprint your own personality on the roles. People go back to the box office because they know they're going to like it."

WORKING THE FAME FORMULA TO PERFECTION
“Madonna is an excellent example of a celebrity working the fame formula to perfection. From her early days as a sharp-witted 80s party girl, she has moved onwards and upwards in her quest to stay famous, creating controversy through videos of her kissing a black Jesus, her Sex book and her flirtation with lesbianism, changing style for every album, acting parts in movies, adopting children, writing books for children and becoming a member of the English landed gentry by dint of marriage and money. Even her sporadic film roles, lambasted though many of them have been, are part of her success. Each new innovation has caused her fame to spike and kept her in the media spotlight.”

Some brands will forever be linked with their celebrity endorsers. What would women's wear line Kate Moss Topshop be without, well, Kate Moss? Or Gisele Bündchen's sandal line, Ipanema by Gisele, without the supermodel's name, image and unrelenting promotion? And yet other bold-face celebs have chosen a decidedly less in-your-face approach. Who but the most fanatical know that the William Rast jeans line isn't owned by anyone named William Rast, but instead is backed by the guy who "brought sexy back," crooner Justin Timberlake?

THE FAME GAME IN 2008
In 1968 the American pop artist Andy Warhol forecast that "in the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes," as the fleeting celebrity of pop culture developed. But now PR "guru" Mark Borkowski has come up with a "fame formula", by studying a range of well-known people, to calculate the shelf-life of a celebrity career.Mr Borkowski believes that Warhol was almost correct, but concludes that people who are pushed into the limelight in this era can expect their initial fame to last for 15 months.

Some, such as Becks and Welsh rugby glamour-boy Gavin Henson, have even argued over them. “I think I have lost a lot of my gay fans to Gavin,” Beckham once said. “It is a shame, as I really love them.”Being equal-opportunity flirts, today's sporno stars want to turn everyone on.

THE “LIKE US” DECADE
Andy Warhol used to say he loved movies and taking pictures because everybody could do it. He would really have loved this first decade of the 21st century. In addition to Bonnie Fuller and her «Stars are like us» pictures of celebrities doing ordinary things in gossip magazines, we even had for eight years a president of the US telling Yale students: you too can be c-students and one day be president of the United States. «We were bad at school and don't know much but hey we'll vote for this guy because he doesn't know much either! Presidents are like us! Everybody can run a country”.

LONDON (AFP) — Mick Jagger, the snake-hipped, rubber-lipped frontman of the Rolling Stones, celebrates his 65th birthday Saturday but shows no signs of slowing down, despite officially becoming an old age pensioner. At an age when most British men are retiring from work and claiming state pensions, Jagger is dating a woman some 25 years his junior -- stylist L'Wren Scott -- counting his millions after the Stones' record-grossing "Bigger Bang" tour and branching out into film production.
His behaviour may not be as hellraising as that of fellow Stone Ronnie Wood, who last week entered rehab to receive treatment for alcohol abuse after running off with a 19-year-old Russian cocktail waitress.

The president-CEO of Hardee's and Carl's Jr. has made a name for his chains -- and boosted same-store sales -- by bragging about the caloric and fat content of products such as the Monster Thickburger and unabashedly championing meat. Sexy ads haven't hurt, either. Mr. Puzder credits the infamous Paris Hilton car-washing commercial with much of Carl's Jr.'s brand awareness outside of the Western U.S. Last year, a TV spot featuring a comely schoolmarm raised the hackles of a teachers union, and Carl's Jr. pulled the spot. Mr. Puzder, an attorney, said it would have been better to use a librarian.

Since its launch in 2005, YouTube has been a hub for users to post short video of some of their most interesting and embarrassing moments. But with 10 hours of new video being uploaded every minute and some 84 million videos already on the site, how will anyone ever find yours?"There's a couple of key factors to getting noticed," says Hollywood talent scout Frederick Levy. "Firstly, if you have true talent, you will rise to the top. There are plenty of talented people out there who have gotten record deals and network deals and pilot deals all based on videos they posted. "Secondly, you have to be extroverted, be a type-A personality with a lot of energy. You also have to keep your video very short. Nobody wants to sit through a 10-minute amateur video. These videos are often watched during breaks at work, before heading out for the evening or just when someone wants a quick distraction, and so that's why the shortest ones are usually the most popular."

Mainstream editors used to be squeamish to the point of erasure when it came to unconfirmed same-sex relationships. Unless a star was willing to say, "Yep, I'm gay," as Ellen DeGeneres so famously did on the cover of Time in 1997 -- and as a trickle of others have too in years since -- print publications (including this one) have generally employed their own form of don't ask/don't tell when covering gay or bisexual celebrities who have not come out via press release or some other explicit declaration. While many celebrities themselves have stopped hiding their same-sex relationships, the media have not until Lohan followed suit. Michael Musto, an openly gay columnist for the Village Voice, who himself has never engaged in that kind of self-censorship, has noticed a change. As Musto sees it, we've reached a moment in which the Lohan-Ronson pairing can simply be reported as a fact because people have, you know, eyes.

“Imagine if the current crop of public figures had grown up during the Facebook era. We might have photos of John McCain in Florida slurping body shots off his stripper girlfriend. Barack Obama rolling a joint on a beach in Hawaii. George W. Bush passed out at a Yale frat party, 40-ounce beer bottles duct-taped to his hands. Hillary Rodham Clinton at a Wellesley peace rally, locking lips with her husband's future secretary of labor, Robert Reich. It's one thing to hear that your elected representative had a wild time in college. It's entirely different to have pictorial proof. Would you still vote for someone after viewing a photograph of him passed out in his own vomit? Our generation - high schoolers, college students and recent graduates - immortalizes the interesting and banal, the innocent and incriminating, all on the Internet. We update our Facebook status as often as we change our shoes, and upload party photos before the last reveler goes home. Non-participation is impossible: We file our job applications online and arrange first dates via e-mail. The upshot? America's standards for personal embarrassment, political scandal and appropriate disclosure are sure to change in the years to come.”

Starting in September, Tinsteltown's largest indie studio (Lionsgate) will be able to monetize those film clips using Google's AdSense service: Sharing, uploading and "mashing up" those clips will be encouraged, because Lionsgate will profit from Google ads sold against them. Google's collaboration with a Hollywood studio stood in stark contrast to the adversarial posture that Hollywood's other entertainment conglomerates have adopted when it comes to YouTube: On July 15, Google complied with a federal judge's demand that it turn over YouTube viewer data to Viacom as evidence in a billion-dollar lawsuit that alleges widespread piracy of Viacom content, including shows such as "South Park," on the video-sharing site.
It was, Mr. Schmidt said, a perfect example of how Hollywood needed to change to adapt the "'anytime, anywhere' consumer model," vs. what he derisively termed "the lawyer model." In short, Viacom hopes to put the horse back in the barn. Mr. Schmidt wants to sell ads on the horse as it runs through town.

Instead of getting offended, former Toronto Sun sex columnist Valerie Gibson took ownership of the cougar moniker, writing "Cougar: A Guide for Older Women Dating Younger Men" (Key Porter Books, 2002) the same year she first heard it in Canada. "I thought, 'That's a wonderful image of older women,'" Gibson says. "Throughout history, we have never been in charge of our sexual lives past 40, but now we are. We are vital. We are sensual. We do the choosing, dumping and picking. It's a wonderful control."In her book, and in the revised edition, due out next year, she talks about the new breed of single, older woman as "confident, sophisticated, desirable and sexy," a woman who knows exactly what she wants ("younger men and lots of great sex") and what she doesn't ("children, cohabitation or commitment"). The new edition will also have a section for pumas, or cougars in training.Gibson, whose last marriage was to a man 14 years her junior, is frank about why the age disparity works. "Women in their 40s and up are in their sexual prime and young men hit their sexual peak in their late 20s," she says.

“Research by Simon Baron-Cohen, a respected Cambridge professor, that began as an investigation into autism, puts a solid case for biological male/female differences in the brain, with boys tending to be “systematisers” and girls “empathisers”. This explains why boys generally are less keen on reading and comprehension, and lag behind girls in literacy. A lot of boys find it easier to explain the workings of a watch than to discuss how a character in a story is feeling. “But now,” says Palmer, “apart from the very bright ones, boys aren't even doing better at maths and science.”

Anthropologist Grant McCracken points to this New York Times article by David Carr about former Us Weekly editor Bonnie Fuller and makes an interesting point about the ideological effects of the celebrity-gossip tabloid Fuller pioneered. The [article’s] most illuminated observation comes from Janice Min.... Here’s how Min explains Fuller’s success. “She is able to almost distill the id of the reader. She channels them in a way few others do, and what she heard is: ‘I don’t care about your acting method in your last movie. I just want to know what workout you used to get that fabulous body.’ “
This suggests that there has been a shift in the celebrity culture, a movement from admiration to imitation. Fans now treat the star less as a god and more as a set of transformational pointers. Celebrities by this reckoning are better than us but not different from us. This is a very big change. Among other things, it marks the democratization of celebrity and the rise of a culture in which everyone imagines themselves a star, or at least transform themselves with a star’s effort and care.

They are using their bodies in ways unimaginable before. It is art in the purest sense of the word -- art that challenges; art that makes you think. The crazy thing that porn has become is the most incredible expression of freedom. If you don't like this, if you are afraid of this, that is an expression of your approach to life, not ours. We're just achieving sexual gratification; is that so bad? Religion says it is -- to the point of torturing and killing, from the Jewish lesson of Sodom and Gomorrah to the Christians during the Inquisition to the radical Muslims who flew planes into buildings.
