“IT'S CALLED GOSSIP AND OF COURSE IT'S AN OBSESSION OF MINE" -ANDY WARHOL
“The other big gossip-magazine trend is for women to be depicted as "mad". Over the past few years we've seen a massive media obsession with women who are considered to be out of control - Britney Spears, Amy Winehouse, Lindsay Lohan and, to a lesser extent, Paris Hilton - and it's hard to avoid the sense that people want to watch these women's story arcs reach the same conclusion as that of their predecessor, the former Playboy model Anna Nicole Smith, who died of an overdose last year. Of course, at one point there was also a massive interest in Pete Doherty's behaviour, but it's notable that this was when he was going out with Kate Moss, and his transgressions therefore reflected on her. Once they had broken up, that interest quickly waned.”

LEFT OR RIGHT: THE AMAZING DECLINE OF HUMANITIES COLLEGE PUBLISH OR PERISH
There are two reasons why liberalism -- as described above -- is directly expedient to a professor's career. First, universities in the United States depend on government funding at least in the form of Pell grants. Democrats tend to expand such programs, and so professors support Democrats.Second, universities run on the publish-or-perish system. This leaves two basic career strategies for professors. The first is to make a discovery, such as "bees' wings are pieces of skin." The other is where groupthink comes in -- to say the exact same thing as someone else did about a slightly different situation, for example, "wasps' wings are made of skin."The vast majority of academic writing falls into the second category and is often not worth the paper it is written on. But much of what falls in the first category -- the breakthrough research in social sciences, even in such disciplines as gender studies -- has been conservative. Even the pretense of liberalism is swiftly being swept away by the increased desperation of tenure candidates for ever-shrinking spots and by the increasing amount of research that is paid for by corporations instead of the government.

“Warhol was the diabolically clever author of his own celebrity -- indeed he almost single-handedly invented the notion of modern celebrity, the idea of being famous simply for being famous. (He also coined perhaps the century's most misquoted quotation -- In the future everybody will be world-famous for 15 minutes.'') He transformed himself into a ubiquitous icon -- a Zelig of the zeitgeist -- a star by virtue of his proximity, and access, to stars, many of whom he vastly outshone by the time of his death in 1987. Whether he was far ahead of the curve, or the curve has simply finally caught up to him, we live in a post-Warholian world. Andy is us.”

“China's new love of celebrities has gone multimedia. Glossy showbiz magazines fill the newsstands, vying for space with newspapers offering ample doses of celebrity gossip. Online, one of China's leading Web portals, Sina.com, has reported that six of its eight most popular blogs are centered on mainland pop singers, Taiwanese actresses and other superstars.
Broadcast media have joined the rush. Last year, China got its own version of "Access Hollywood," a popular U.S. television show delivering news about the rich, famous and beautiful. Distributed by NBC Universal Television, the Chinese version has a potential audience of 300 million viewers, providing a dash of news about famous foreigners but focusing primarily on Chinese stars.”

THE LEAST INTERESTING PERSON ON THE PLANET
Didn't you once write a script about Warhol?
Right after Drugstore Cowboy in 1989 Universal asked Paul Bartel and me to write a script about him. We visited the Factory and met his business manager and executor Fred Hughes, who was in his office in his wheelchair. The only painting on the wall was a Warhol Electric Chair. Fred wanted to know why on earth we were going to make a film about 'him' because 'he' was the least interesting person on the planet. We handed in the script to Universal, and they said, 'No thanks'.

NOTHING LEFT BUT IMAGES
“Finally, I would invoke one of my favorite works of art, Andy Warhol's Marilyn Diptych (Tate Gallery), which clearly demonstrates the childhood influence on Warhol of his family's Eastern rite church. It is a modern iconostasis: fifty images of Marilyn Monroe are lined up in registers on two large screens. On one, the orange-yellow riot of Marilyn's silk-screened images illustrates her cartoon-like stardom. On the other, her photos have faded to smudged black and white, like newsprint washed by rain or tears. Marilyn Diptych suggests that in a media age, words melt away, and nothing is left but images.”

“Decades ago it was easier for divas such as Bette Davis to get away with brattish behaviour because there was little access to them and their air of mystery prevailed. Not so today. Where once it suggested high glamour, now it smacks of “notice me” desperation. Celebrities may think that they are consolidating their power and “legend” status by their prima donna demands (Mariah Carey is said to have an assistant to hold her glass for her while she drinks; Diana Ross instructed her entire entourage to address her as “Miss Ross”) but it effectively disempowers them. The wonderful talent that made them famous in the first place becomes secondary, and the divadom ends up defining them. It's probably too late now for Naomi to ensure that she is remembered for her beauty and not her filthy temper. But other celebrities should watch and learn. It is how famous people treat the “little” people around them that is the legacy which really endures.”

What do you know, women still experience more regret over one-night stands than men do, according to a new study. Researchers at Durham University in the U.K. surveyed 1,743 men and women about their morning-after feelings and found that 80 percent of men and 54 percent of women reported feeling good after a hookup; men also feel more confident and sexually satisfied afterward, and are more likely to brag to friends about it.

IMAGINARY DIARIES OF A POP ARTIST: THE GAY BRAIN
June 24 2008
Oh, everybody is still talking about this new study at the office. It found gay men and heterosexual women had halves of a similar size, while the right side was bigger in lesbian women and straight men. Gee, did they really need a study to find that out? Only fairies and women care about stupid Hollywood gossip and only straight men can dress as badly as lesbians. Some kid told me they should really study their “fucking pattern” though. He said they would see the real difference that count. I guess he's right. I mean gay men are even more sex obsessed than straight men and have more partners than them and lesbians are even more drama obsessed than straight women and have even less sex than them...

When we cover a celebrity, it's about what they do for a living; it's not about who they're sleeping with. She said: "There is a real paradox within society today. On one hand, female celebrities crave freedom. But on the other hand, they still pander to conservative ideas of sexuality through what's been called raunch culture. "Women are routinely condemned for their behaviour in the media, but this isn't just misogyny from men - the bitching culture tends to be about women against women.

In five short years, iTunes has become the #1 music retailer in the nation. We're supposed to believe that their success has nothing to do with the fact that they've made it easy and cut-rate cheap to legitimize the act of downloading music. With iTunes, instead of spending $18 on a product that you don’t really know if you want to commit to, you can sample each song, buy one track at a time, etc. It’s ideal and an absolute mandate for anyone like me who's old enough to remember being cheated out of our sacred heaps of nickels and dimes at Sam Goody as kids, buying albums on the strength of a single we'd heard on the radio, only to find out too late that what we'd heard was the only song on the album worth listening to. I think it's fair to say that the music biz built their empires throughout the 80's on that trick alone - look at the inexplicable surge and wild success of New Wave bands back (and MC Hammer) then. Is there any other explanation? I refuse to believe our parents' taste in music was simply that horrible. Maybe the cocaine was just really good in those days.

He was this weird guy who was always at parties taking pictures. I was amazed when I was told he was one of the most influential artists of the 20th century." In 1986, the year of his marriage to O'Neal, McEnroe went to a charity auction and bid "something like $30,000" to have their portrait painted by Warhol. In contrast to his early paintings of stars such as Marilyn Monroe or Elizabeth Taylor that were taken from publicity shots, most of Warhol's later society portraits were the results of commissions and based on Polaroid photographs that he would take.”

Are the more demanding, powerful modern women out of the "Sex and the City" playbook so intimidating and threatening that a growing number of younger men are using Viagra and similar medications to help them cope? Many therapists say it's happening -- more and more men aged 18-30 using "the little blue pill" and other drugs of its ilk to deal with performance anxiety stemming from the nature of the women they're dating. The men say today's empowered women are very vocal about what they want in terms of intimacy, creating pressure that's leading to problems in the boudoir.

I think the stories we did about underage drinking by celebrities in Hollywood at clubs was a really important story. A lot of the stories, funny enough, that we did on Paris Hilton in jail, with the judge that just nailed her to make an example of her, they actually ended up being important stories with a message. At the same time, is what we do life changing? No. Is it comparable to economic policy? No. Is it comparable to foreign policy? No. Is it comparable to the front page of the New York Times? No. We are part of the diet of life. It's a part that a lot of people like. It's not the center of their universe for most people but it's just a fun part of their universe.”

Maybe it’s not so surprising, though, considering the birth of the World Wide Web has allowed viewers an easier and many times cheaper way to access porn as well as a much larger variety of pornography for people with different tastes. Some believe it may be because of the recession the United States is experiencing. Consumers are finding ways to cut corners and save cash by viewing the world’s number one porn website, YouPorn (similar to YouTube), which offers free uploads of pornographic videos. TAKASHI MURAKAMI
Andy Warhol is the starting point for Mr. Murakami’s cold embrace of heedless commercialism. But the scale and scope of Mr. Murakami’s enterprise would have been beyond Warhol’s ken, though he probably would have found it amusing. Mr. Murakami’s obliviousness to irony might have given Andy pause. The Factory, with its roving array of socialites, bohemians and hangers-on, was a pointed mockery of the artist’s studio as sanctum sanctorum.

There will be no media consumption left in 10 years that is not delivered over an IP network.”“If we want TV to be more interactive, you’ll deliver over an IP network,” he said to Washington Post.He reveals that he watches this favorite TV program, “Lost”, on the Internet, despite it comes with the four 20 seconds of ads. He does not DVR it or buy it from iTunes.
ANGELINA JOLIE ANDY WARHOL & THE PRODUCT QUESTION
“So you should always have a product that's not just you. An actress should count up her plays and movies and a model should count up her photographs and a writer should count up his words and an artist should count up his pictures so you always know exactly what you're worth and you don't get stuck thinking your product is you and your fame and your aura”.
-The Philosophy of Andy Warhol
ANGELINA COLLAPSES...FOR THE 50th TIME!
"In my father's generation, the product was 80 percent of what you were putting into the world, and your personal life was 20 percent. It now seems that 80 percent of the product I put out is silly, made-up stories and what I'm wearing."
-Angelina Jolie

IMAGINARY DIARIES OF A POP ARTIST: TECHNOLOGY
June 8 2008
Walked down the street and saw some 20 year old wearing a a t-shirt saying : “Play Station” with an arrow pointing at his dick.
Gee, young people are really into technology now. Was invited to some fashion show yesterday. It was really one of those awful “gayla”. I mean the whole thing was so gay it made Chris Crocker look straight. Everybody say they don't know what Hillary will do now. She should become the new Obama girl on You Tube. Read the Angelina Jolie interview in Vanity Fair. It was really great.
