GEORGE PLIMPTON ON STUDIO 54
«Steve Rubell who co-owned Studio 54 , went down to the basement one dawn after he'd thought
everyone had left and found a Eurotrash princess handcuffed to an overhead pipe. She had been taken down there by her own request, handcuffed, fucked by one of the cocktail waiters-half naked, they ran around in what looked like diapers- who then thought My God I've got to go back to the bar! and forgot about the handcuffs. I can't be sure about the princess's reaction to her night, but a kind of laissez-faire attitude prevailed about Studio 54. As one of the regulars said: «We knew we were having the time of our lives; we were loving it. We knew it was an extraordinary time, and we knew it wouldn't last».

«I like American films best, I think they're so great, they're so clear, they're so true, their surfaces are great. I like what they have to say: they don't really have much to say, that's why they're so good. I feel the less something has to say the more perfect it is».

PHILOSOPHY FOR THE 21st CENTURY: PORNO GAY

Andy's most succesful show in 1977 was of his least obvious commercial series, the Hammer & Sickles, at the Daniel Templon Gallery in Paris. These were a tongue-in-cheek response to the marxist analysis of his work by Italian art critics. In Andy's hands, the tough symbols of Communism were turned into stunning still lifes, beautiful enough for capitalist titans like Gianni Agnelli to buy for their palatial walls.

PHILOSOPHY FOR THE 21st CENTURY: ART

KEITH HARING ON MADONNA
«I knew Madonna from before. We were in that scene in the lower East Village at the same time. She was just starting. She used to go out with Jellybean [Benitez, now a record producer], and I'd see her sing at the Fun House, where he was the OJ. Bur I met the others through Andy. He had a way of sort of making things happen around him. I don't go to those parties much anymore; I'm not leading the same glamorous life. I don't miss it a lot, but when it started happening, I was young and naive, and it was really exciting. It was like incredible to go, you know, to meet Michael Jackson backstage with Andy. When he brought me to Yoko' s apartment the first time, it was incredible. You can't believe that you're there. The ultimate one was a dinner at Yoko's. I brought Madonna and the artist Martin Burgoyne. Andy was already there. Bob Dylan was there. David Bowie was there. And Iggy Pop. Just sort of in the kitchen. At first you are more in awe of things like that, but you adapt really quickly.»

ART HISTORY 101 FOR THE 21st CENTURY
«Supporters of the arts who gleefully cheer when a religious symbol is maltreated act as if that response authenticates their avant-garde credentials. But here's the bad news: the avant-garde is dead. It was killed over forty years ago by Pop Art and by one of my heroes Andy Warhol a decadent catholic. The era of vigorous oppositional art inaugurated two hundreds years ago by Romanticism is long gone. The controversies over Andreas Serrano, Robert Mapplethorpe and Chris Ofili were just fading sparks of an old cause».

WOMAN IN REVOLT
«Conservative feminism is pro-woman but male-friendly. If boys are languishing academically, if blue-collar men lose most of the jobs in the recession, or if innocent young men are falsely accused of heinous crimes--as several members of the Duke University Lacrosse team were in 2006, with campus feminists at the head of the mob--conservative feminists will speak out on men's behalf. The feminists now in power in our universities and in Washington see the world differently--as a zero-sum struggle between men and women, in which their job is to fight for women. But that is not the attitude of most women, whether conservative or liberal in political outlook. Men are their fathers, brothers, husbands, and sons; when they are in trouble, so are the women who care about them and, in many cases, depend on them.»
-Christina Hoff Sommers
LE SEXE C'EST NUL

«I LIKE MONEY ON THE WALL»

PAGLIA: I understand when men complain about women giving mixed messages, because women have given me a lot of mixed messages. I understand the rage that this can cause.
PLAYBOY: Give us an example.
PAGLIA: A woman I'm talking with at some event says, "Let's leave here and go to this bar," which is a lesbian bar. We go to the bar and we're talking and then she says, "Let's go have coffee," and we go to this coffee shop and end up, at three in the morning, half a block from her apartment. Finally, she says, "All right, well, goodnight." She's ready to go home alone and I look at her, like, "What do you mean? Aren't we going to go back to your apartment?" "No." "What?" And she says, "Do you think I was leading you on?" Un-fucking-believable. I can't tell you the rage. I am, at that point, looking at her and.... All I can say is, if I had been an 18-year-old street kid instead of a 45-year-old woman, I would have stabbed her. I was completely humiliated and furious. If I had been a guy with a hard-on, I would have hit her.
