«I LIKE EVERYBODY'S ART»

David Hockney IPAD ART

«I BELIEVE MEDIA IS ART»

Who says you can't teach old artists new tricks? English painter David Hockney, best known for elaborate photo collages and watercolors of Los Angeles swimming pools, has traded his paintbrush and camera for an iPad. The 73-year-old artist uses the electronic tablet as a sketchpad and sends his pictures of landscapes, flowers and caps to friends, according to the Los Angeles Times. "What fascinates me is not just technology but the technology of picture-making," Hockney tells writer Barbara Isenberg during a tour of his Yorkshire studio. "I spend more time painting, of course, but I treat the iPad as a serious tool. The iPad is influencing the paintings now with its boldness and speed."

Marcel Duchamp’s only surviving readymade, the perfume flask Belle Haleine, Eau de Voilette, 1921, made a rare and brief appearance last week in Berlin. As Monopol and the Süddeutsche Zeitung report, the work used to be part of Yves Saint Laurent’s private collection until it was auctioned off two years ago for eleven million dollars in Paris. The buyer remains unknown. This solo exhibition––for only three days and nights––marks the work’s first appearance since the auction. Unlike Duchamp’s other readymades, which disappeared after their exhibition, Belle Haleine survived because the artist gave the work as a gift to his then-lover Yvonne Crotti.

Reporter Alex Morris bravely embeds with a group of teenage girls and finds that they are flaunting sexy photos of themselves on Facebook and relishing the response it gets out of boys. A sampling of comments: "VERY SEXY... . I LIKEY" and "OMG OMG OMG OMG CAN WE PLEASE GET MARRIED!!!" (Ah, the poetry of youth.) As Morris puts it, this is "the secondhand sexual validation Facebook allows," and it's just one way that girls today are feeling out their "sexual potential online." One of the article's subjects takes delight not only in the responses her photos garner from the masses but also her boyfriend's jealous reaction to all the fawning. Naturally, there is also jealousy and competition between girls: Morris writes that one of her teen subjects feels betrayed when a female friend sends around a topless photo of herself "because she knows that the stakes have been raised, that she'll now have to do more to draw the male gaze her way."

Self-portraits by Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat will star in contemporary-art auctions in London set to raise at least 72.5 million pounds ($116 million).A pair of Jeff Koons bear sculptures, a Gerhard Richter abstract and a pile of Ai Weiwei porcelain flower seeds are also among lots in the evening mixed-owner sales starting Feb. 15. The total minimum estimates are 14 percent higher than in 2010.Sotheby’s, Christie’s International and Phillips de Pury & Co.’s sales come as contemporary-art dealers look for price rises. Worldwide auctions slumped more than 50 percent in 2009. The once-booming market is still recovering, according to the French-based data company Artprice.

The show won back-to-back Emmy awards for best reality program in 2007 and 2008.As the show evolved, Griffin said celebrity culture changed "from people becoming famous because of their talent to people becoming famous due to a sex change or something."And I love keeping up with it. Even when you look at pro sports, it less about the talent and more about the scandals. «I LIKE MONEY ON THE WALL»

Jan 27 (Reuters) - Auctioneer Christie's said on Thursday last year's record sales of 3.3 billion pounds ($5.0 billion) were sustainable due to the rising number of people buying art, and there was room for further growth."It is that rise of new registrants which really for me signals both sustainability and actually further potential growth," Jussi Pylkkanen, president of Christie's Europe, told Reuters in an interview.Christie's has reported a 53 percent jump in global sales last year. Its main rival, Sotheby's (BID.N), has yet to report but its auction sales also rose sharply last year to $4.3 billion.Pylkkanen said Christie's, the world's largest auction house, would focus on expanding its presence online and on developing a client base in mainland China. «I BELIEVE IN TELEVISION. IT'S GOING TO TAKE OVER FROM THE MOVIES»

– Jersey Shore has what people want. What are the two big drivers of human drama throughout the history of entertainment? Romance and conflict. Well, guess what, Shakespere fans? That’s all Jersey Shore is! The show isn’t about solving crimes, healing patients, winning a competition any other form of “work” that populates most TV shows. Despite a few dull scenes in a T-shirt shop, Jersey Shore is about sex and fighting, distilling drama to its raw core. In each episode, the cast prepares for sex and fighting (ie: “gym-tan-laundry”), has sex and fight, and then — in true reality show fashion — endlessly discuss the sex and fighting that did (or did not) take place. Repeat cycle. In other words: It’s not that there’s something wrong with people for liking Jersey Shore, humans are wired to like Jersey Shore.

Picasso, Nude, Green Leaves and Bust

Christie’s, New York, May 4 2010

One of a series of highly prized, intimate portraits Picasso painted in 1932 of his lover, Marie-Thérèse Walter, this painting was always going to fly. Four years ago, another example from the series, Le Rêve, was about to be sold for $139m (£88m) when its owner, Steve Wynn, stuck his elbow through it by mistake. With a recession-friendly $70m to $90m (£44-£57m) estimate, this one sold to an anonymous buyer for $106.5m (£68m) – a record for any work of art at auction, proving that, even in hard times, the very rich will put their money into great art.

WOMEN IN REVOLT

The way to smash the glass ceiling, I was once told, is to smash the myth that women can have it all. There is a whole generation of women who were raised to believe that it is possible to have a stellar career, a wonderful marriage, an amazing sex life, several well-balanced children and still have time to see your girlfriends and get your hair done. I run a business, have three children and a husband and put dozens of women each year into senior and well-paid jobs and know this to be total rubbish. The eminent LSE sociologist Catherine Hakim recently published a paper that appears to suggest that, as a result, feminism is dead and most women now want to marry a rich husband and stay at home. This, in turn, has spawned acres of print, with Grazia magazine asking their readers to choose between ambition and "man-bition", and other papers describing the stay-at-home wife as the "ultimate luxury" for a successful man.

Jake Halpern, author of the book, Fame Junkies: The Hidden Truths Behind America’s Favorite Addiction suggests, “Kids see fame as a cure-all for problems.” And why wouldn’t they? In culture-filled viral videos, young people today see fame as something that’s achievable for everyone, even if, like Joe the Plumber, it’s a brief flash. All it takes is one headline, and anyone can have a book deal, or be a movie of the week. When Andy Warhol said, “In the future everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes,” he may not have known how accurate his prediction would become for our society. We grab onto the newest craze, idea, or person, then promptly discard it when we become bored, or the next flavor-of-the-week arrives.

John Axford, director of Woolley & Wallis, said: "There are a number of very wealthy buyers who are trying to form their own collections and/or their own museums in China. A number of the Chinese super-rich are spending very large sums on the most prestigious works of art. We've been lucky enough to sell some of these."Although Sotheby's, Christie's and Bonhams are also achieving record prices thanks to the Chinese yuan, the regional auction houses are giving London a run for its money.Among its numerous multimillion-pound Chinese sales, Woolley & Wallis sold a mid-18th-century Qianlong carved jade water buffalo for £4.2m in 2009, then a UK record for an object sold outside London and the most expensive piece of jade ever sold in the world. In November it sold a Qianlong imperial jade deer for £3.8m.Such is the demand from Chinese collectors that rhino-horn libation cups – intricately carved ceremonial drinking vessels that once sold for a few hundred pounds – are changing hands for tens of thousands.

HONG KONG — A diamond-studded baby's skull by British artist Damien Hirst stares out across a brand new gallery in Hong Kong, smiling over Asia's rising demand for exorbitantly expensive works of art.It is the first time the work's controversial creator has exhibited in Asia, a sure sign that the epicentre of the world's art scene is shifting east -- following the money.
Entitled "For Heaven's Sake", the work is a platinum cast of a human baby skull with more than 16,000 diamonds embedded in it. It is the first time the work has gone on display anywhere."Diamonds are about perfection and clarity and wealth and sex and death and immortality," the artist said in Hong Kong ahead of the "Forgotten Promises" exhibition, which opens on Tuesday."They are a symbol of everything that's eternal, but then they have a dark side as well."
The infant, believed to have been aged around 40 weeks, has been dead a long time. The skull itself was part of a nineteenth century pathology collection owned by the artist and still sits in his studio.

Jan 13 2011

Oh, why are there so many good-looking kids now? They should really do a movie about it. A movie with just one question. They would go to colleges and just ask nice kids: «How does it feel to be young and beautiful?» Hunks would smile with a grin à la Bruce Weber, beautiful girls would pose and show off their bodies while answering, guys would be swaggering, acting dumb and flexing their muscles while laughing, etc. That would be a great american documentary. The VIP (for Viewing in Private) Art Fair, which will open on January 22nd and run for a week, promises to cut costs dramatically for buyers and sellers of contemporary art: it will take place exclusively in the virtual world. VIP was created by James and Jane Cohan, a couple of New York art dealers who teamed up with two internet entrepreneurs three years ago when the art world was about to be hit by recession. At the last count 138 galleries from 30 countries had signed up. They range from established shops like London’s White Cube and New York’s David Zwirner to relative newcomers such as i8 in Reykjavik. Gallery owners can choose between three sizes of virtual booths for their wares, for about one-fifth as much as a traditional art fair charges. Mere browsing is free, although visitors must pay for access to an instant-messaging system, price lists and dealers’ private rooms.

With all that we know about the personal habits of male professional athletes, why do women keep marrying them?

Option A: Women love money. When you marry the Cowboys' quarterback, you know that along with his boyish good looks, you're going to get at least one monstrous house (which the hired help cleans for you), fame if you want it, in the form of some hideous reality show on E!, all the designer clothes and shoes your little heart's ever dreamed of and, when your 24-year-old ass starts to sag, the best plastic surgery NFL money can buy. So why not scream "yes, yes, yes"when he pops the question? Tons of women would love to be in your shoes. But as Eva Longoria, Deanna Favre, Elin Nordegren and countless other professional athletes' wives have learned, rich famous guys get ass thrown at them constantly and the majority of them step up and take a big ol' bite of it.

IT'S USELESS TO BE YOUNG WITHOUT BEING BEAUTIFUL AND VICE VERSA

«ATHLETES ARE GOING TO BE THE NEW MEDIA STARS»

Warhol was an outsider to the sports world, so securing athletes was not an easy task for Weisman. A few of the athletes had reservations about Warhol, most notably golfer Jack Nicklaus. “He had heard that Andy might be weird,” Weisman recalls. Most of the athletes agreed to the project when they learned that Muhammad Ali was on board. Warhol traveled to Ali’s boxing camp in Deerlake, PA to shoot the Champ, who understood Warhol’s unique place in the pop culture stratosphere and was excited about his selection. “This little negro from Kentucky couldn’t buy a fifteen hundred-dollar motorcycle a few years ago and now they pay twenty-five thousand dollars for my picture!”Similar to Ali, Abdul-Jabbar had no reservations about joining the project. “My initial reaction to being chosen to be in Andy Warhol’s athlete series was one of being proud that I was considered to be worthy of that distinction,” Abdul-Jabbar says via email. “I was aware of the fact that Warhol was an artist who had emerged to become one of the trend-setters in modern art.”Warhol flew to California to photograph Kareem on November 4, 1977. He was amazed at the center’s sheer size, commenting that he could literally fit between his legs. Abdul-Jabbar remembers Warhol as a relaxed and focused artist, who conducted the session seriously. “When I met with him to pose for the polaroids he used as a study of his subjects, I had an interesting talk with him concerning the impact of his art,” Abdul-Jabbar recalls. “He told me how various images—soup cans, cleaning products—were parodies of the nature of America’s popular culture. It made it possible for me to have an insight as to how Warhol’s images said something about who and what we are as a nation.”

WOMEN IN REVOLT

In 2010, three Muslim women in Malaysia who were caned for having sex outside of marriage claimed that the punishment was justified and even beneficial. The three women, aged 17-25, said they turned themselves in after feeling guilty for having pre-marital sex with their respective boyfriends. This sort of resignation to anti-feminist ideals is also reflected in the beliefs held by some Muslim women who not only accept but also defend the actions of men who abuse them (or other women) physically, psychologically, or through other means such as by forcing a girl into an arranged marriage. While many of these women are victims of the regimes they live under, this does not mean that they will not collude as misogynists themselves. Mothers who arrange for their daughters to undergo female genital mutilation or worse, the mother who stands by as her daughter becomes the victim of an honour killing may well have suffered in their own lives (and indeed they may participate in such misogynistic rituals because of their own normalised experience of suffering), but this does not excuse such abuse. Cultural relativism is not a defence for human rights abuses. So what is an appropriate feminist response to all this? How are feminists meant to react when, as happens in Western countries too, women act as their own worst enemy? It's a difficult dilemma. Painting Muslim women as victims only infantilises and alienates them. Conversely, ceding agency to Muslim women by claiming that they freely "choose" their religion only obfuscates the complex systems of power and gendered exploitation that continue to exist within many Muslim communities.

«MORE THAN ANYTHING PEOPLE JUST WANT STARS»

And Hollywood, true to form, is wallowing in self-pity. Celebrities want our sympathy and they’re willing to burst our bubble to prove it. Earlier this year, Joaquin Phoenix and Casey Affleck’s mockumentary, I’m Still Here, pulled back the curtain on the kind of devouring, narcissistic personal hell that has afflicted movie stars since the advent of the studio system.Sofia Coppola’s new film, Somewhere, takes it to a whole new level. In it, Stephen Dorff plays a disaffected Hollywood leading man who drifts around his suite at the Chateau Marmont hotel, ordering in strippers, indulging in random sex, and generally having no idea where, what or who he’s meant to be next. His chiselled blankness is as charismatic as it is disturbing – a metaphor for the allure of Hollywood itself, a place where illusion is everything.

«I JUST READ EVERYTHING»

This anecdote illuminates much history. Throughout the nearly two thousand years of the Diaspora, Jews were repeatedly discriminated against, restricted in the activities they could undertake, on occasion expelled en masse, as in 1492 from Spain, and often the object of the extreme hostility of the peoples among whom they lived. They were able nonetheless to exist because of the absence of a totalitarian state, so that there were always some market elements, some activities open to them to enter. In particular, the fragmented political structure and the numerous separate sovereignties meant that international trade and finance in particular escaped close control, which is why Jews were so prominent in this area. It is no accident that Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia, the two most totalitarian societies in the past two thousand years (modern China perhaps excepted), also offer the most extreme examples of official and effective anti-Semitism.If we come to more recent time, Jews have flourished most in those countries in which competitive capitalism had the greatest scope: Holland in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and Britain and the U.S. in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Germany in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century—a case that is particularly pertinent when that period is compared with the Hitler period.

It doesn’t mean you can’t get hot, but right now you’re not working to your full potential.” Here is what Santagati suggests: “You should totally rethink the way you dress and approach the dating scene. Dress slutty one night and see if this changes things. I’m not saying dress like a tramp all the time, I’m saying go extreme for one day and night and see what happens.”Now that Santagati has you appealing to the mens visually, consider changing your mental approach too. My friend Tom, a cool, straight, feminist man who has been on a red-hot dating streak, says, “She needs to start being a pro at making a guy she likes happy. She should cut down on thinking about what she wants to do and focus on what he likes and how she can make that happen. She should stop listening to the ‘me’ voice in her head and listen to him. Study him. Give him what he wants. If she’s picked the right guy, the reward is that she’ll get the same back in return. And then, bingo! Boyfriend.”
