«I LIKE MONEY ON THE WALL»
The highlight of the evening was unquestionably a rediscovered, bold red-and-stark-white, Andy Warhol Self-Portrait, 1967, unseen in public for over 30 years. This work is not in the artist's catalogue raisonné, but importantly has been approved, stamped and numbered by the powerful Andy Warhol Art Authentication Board. Bidding, which began at £2.2m, was exciting, mostly due to two of the art market's biggest hitters—the dealer-collector José Mugrabi and über-gallerist Larry Gagosian—going head to head in the saleroom for the same work. Gagosian eventually won the day, bagging the self-portrait for a cool £10.8m (est £3m to £5m).
