«I HAVE A BUSINESS TO KEEP GOING. I MEAN THE PORNO PICTURES ARE FOR A SHOW. THEY'RE WORK».

I see why he’s a star — Kurt Wild loves cock up his ass. Or at least he is a good actor. He moans, he whines, he groans, his cock is hard. He talks dirty. He tells Barrett he likes getting spanked and fingers his ass. I love gay-for-pay models. Because you know what? It’s fucking porn. They are doing a job. Gay guys can do well with the same job, but they are less likely to excel. Straight guys usually overcompensate: they take the job seriously, they treat it like a job, they don’t get lazy.

«GOOD BUSINESS IS THE BEST ART»

This is hardly a word that has haunted De Pury's career. Rather, they call him the Mick Jagger of auctioneers, the man with a reputation for making sale rooms around the world fizz with wild bids. When I ask him how many millions of art he has sold in a 40-year career, De Pury says he isn't sure, but takes me through the big moments, including those giddy six-and-a-half minutes at Sotheby's in 1995 when he sold Picasso's blue period masterpiece The Absinthe Drinker, to Andrew Lloyd Webber – not for the $12m pre-sale estimate, but for an astounding $29.1m. "It was quite difficult to get bids. Then there was euphoria afterwards. It was a wonderful moment." Lloyd Webber is selling it in June, for an estimated £40m.

"These are not the most exciting moments," says De Pury, however. "What I get a kick out of is making the value of contemporary artists I love rise. Richard Prince [the American painter] used to sell for £30-70,000. Now his works sell for up to $10m, and he has had a big retrospective at the Guggenheim. I am especially proud of this." He prefers to be taste-maker rather than money-maker? "I prefer both." He doesn't baulk when I liken him to Saatchi. "The difference is Charles is faster that anyone else. He has deep pockets, too." True, but De Pury's are hardly shallow: the Saatchi Gallery has free admission because the baron's auction house bankrolls it.

PHILOSOPHY FOR THE 21st CENTURY:WOMEN

A woman will forgive you if you cheat on her. She will never forgive you if you don't look at her in a sexual way the first time you meet her.

ANDY WARHOL AND THE CAN THAT SOLD THE WORLD BY GARY INDIANA

Indiana likes Warhol, thinks he was a genius, and particularly adores his thumbs up to the abstract expressionists that came before him and those artists’ “star-spangled clichés of cowboy individualism”. But his book feels most exciting when he expounds on Warhol’s dark side and how his importance was not necessarily a good thing. Importance connotes the baleful as well as the salubrious, Indiana says. With Warhol, finally, he is leaning towards the baleful.“It is possible that [Warhol’s] importance was, and is, that his art and life changed what Americans consider important,” he writes. And what were the characteristics of Warhol, the man and his cans, that have become so important? “Commodity, consumption and celebrity worship” as well as “velocity, vicariousness, instant obsolescence, the erasure of historical memory, and the three-second attention span induced by the mass media”. It is not a pretty list. As Billy Name, a Factory acolyte, more emphatically puts it, Warhol left behind “hell, as we know it”.

PHILOSOPHY FOR THE 21st CENTURY: HOLLYWOOD BABY

News of stars having a baby is really the best way to cancel out any discussion about social class in the US. A woman can be fat, poor and live in a slum with her 5 kids but think after reading «finally a baby for Jen?» :she has a mansion, plenty of cool friends, looks good, travel the world, have plenty of money, but she is not really happy like me because she doesn't have a baby. And then the same woman goes to buy the trashy magazine telling her how unhappy Jen is, read it alone sitting on her fat ass while Jen is having a blast at some party. That's great american marketing.

«IT'S CALLED GOSSIP AND OF COURSE IT'S AN OBSESSION OF MINE»

Grace Jones recently gave a rare interview to The Guardian in which they asked her about Lady Gaga. Initially the infamous supermodel cum popstar cum artist cum icon of androgyny responded, “I really don’t think of her at all. I go about my business.” And then the claws came out. When asked more specifically if Jones felt Gaga had copied her, she answered, “Well, you know, I’ve seen some things she’s worn that I’ve worn, and that does kind of piss me off.” Fair enough. Jones certainly came first and has certainly spent many, many more years living as a walking, breathing, work of art.It then comes out that Gaga had asked Jones to do a collaboration — which Jones flatly refused. “I said no. I’d just prefer to work with someone who is more original and someone who is not copying me, actually.”Grace Jones made her name in the 70s, with Andy Warhol and the rest of his factory crowd. She inspired artists and became a muse to Helmut Newton, Jean-Paul Goude, and Warhol himself. Jones is now 61 and there is certainly something to be said for the authenticity that comes with almost 40 years of history. No doubt Gaga to Jones is a 23-year-old blip on the radar.

«OH, ART IS TOO HARD»

Imagine a market for highly sought-after items in which the makers and sellers work hard to ensure that the items go only to certain buyers, even if other buyers might be willing to pay more. The favored buyers are then expected not to resell the items for many years, even if the values skyrocket. Ideally, in fact, the buyers are expected to give these items away eventually, for the public good. And if the buyers don’t abide by these expectations, they risk being cut off, cast out with the other unwashed wealthy who can afford to buy but have no access. At least according to Craig Robins, a prominent Miami art collector and real estate developer who filed a federal lawsuit on March 29 in Manhattan, this is a portrait of the workings of the primary market for contemporary art, which, despite the recession, remains immense and highly competitive. At its heart, the $8 million suit is a fairly ordinary contract dispute about confidentiality agreements and sales promises. But the details of the disagreement have provided a rare view into a normally very private world of high-end art selling in which membership rules, responsibilities, rewards and reprisals can be so complex and changeable that even art world veterans say they sometimes struggle to decode them.

OTTAWA — A major exhibit of contemporary art opening at the National Gallery of Canada in June includes works of an explicit nature, but the gallery has no plans to hire bouncers to check IDs at the door to keep minors out. Instead, the gallery's approach will be more like a parental advisory sticker on a CD, says Jonathan Shaughnessy, the gallery's assistant curator of contemporary art.Curated by the Tate Modern gallery in London, Pop Life: Art in a Material World includes more than 200 works by renowned artists such as Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst and Jeff Koons. According to Shaughnessy, less than 10 per cent of the artwork is explicit. The restricted pieces include Koons' photographs of himself and his then-wife, Ilona Staller (a.k.a. porn star Cicciolina), and a video by performance artist Andrea Fraser, who shot a sexual liaison with a private collector who paid her $20,000.

WHY NICE GIRLS PREFER TO GET FUCKED BY DOUCHEBAGS!

Douchebags are powerful: Often, douchebags are powerful people in their regular lives, which is generally a turn-on for girls.

They want a challenge: Some girls like to think they can be the one to turn a douchebag into a nice guy.

They want what they can’t have: Girls often like to pursue relationships with men that they know will never commit.

They like to be treated like crap: Some girls have such low self-respect that they expect to get bad treatment from a guy.

Nice guys don’t offer a spark: Douchebags often offer a chemistry that "nice guys" can’t.

They don’t want to feel bad for being a douche, too: When you’re dating a douchebag, there’s less pressure to be a nice girlfriend.

They come from an abusive home: Some girls come from an abusive background and just date what they’re used to.

They love confidence: Douchebags are confident, and women like that.

They’re lonely: Lonely girls would rather date a douchebag than no one at all.

They like bad boys: Bad boys are exciting, and girls will date them even if they’re jerks.

Jerks are well connected: Whether they’re in a frat or exclusive social circle, douchebags are often well-connected to the ladies.

«I JUST READ EVERYTHING»

"We've found that 'gaydar' has quite a bit, if not perfect, accuracy," said J Michael Bailey, a Northwestern University psychology professor who has researched people's ability to guess other people's sexuality. "We've done studies where we've brought people into the lab, videotaped them describing the weather in Chicago, and then brought in other people to watch the video and judge them. And they're always right. In a 2008 study, Bailey found that gay and straight people who viewed the videos correctly identified straight people 87 per cent of the time and correctly identified homosexual people 75 per cent of the time. The research, involving about 50 subjects and 50 raters, also found that gay and lesbian people don't have much of an advantage over straight people when it comes to guessing whether a person is gay or straight. Many who judged Ricky Martin's sexuality certainly based their opinions on his behaviour as a performer, as well as other mannerisms they would see in interviews. Bailey agreed that most of those perceptions are based on stereotypes of gay men."Stereotypes are often at least partly based in truth," Bailey said. "It reflects what we call gender non-conformity in gay and lesbian people. On average, gay men tend to be a bit feminine and lesbians a bit masculine. That's on average and not every case, of course. There are gay and lesbian interest patterns.

ROBERT & ETHEL SCULL

A half-century ago, before the phrase “Pop Art” was even coined, a taxi tycoon named Robert C. Scull started buying up dozens of works by artists like Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg and Andy Warhol. When Mr. Johns had an exhibition at Castelli Gallery, and none of it was selling, Mr. Scull bought the whole show. He commissioned Warhol’s first portrait. He gave James Rosenquist his first sale after a visit to his studio. He gave John Chamberlain enough money to let him quit his hairdressing job and focus exclusively on being a sculptor. As much as anyone, Mr. Scull and his wife, Ethel — a fashion plate and socialite whom everyone called Spike— created the market for Pop, making it the occasion for lavish parties, an emblem of high society and the new face of art in the 1960s. Then, in 1973, they auctioned off a huge chunk of it — 50 paintings and sculptures — and walked away with $2.2 million, dozens of times more than they had paid. Much of the art world was scandalized. New York magazine’s art critic railed at the “banal, nouveau riche” Sculls, whose “greed,” “shamelessness,” and “sheer, unadulterated chutzpa” killed contemporary art “not with a whimper but with a bid.”

«PERSONNALY I LOVED PORNO AND I BOUGHT LOTS OF IT ALL THE TIME"

There is a common genre of amateur porn that I affectionately call “Lecherous Director.” Usually this is a guy who got into porn with the goal of having sex with hot models. Many of these directors work with straight guys, starting with the premise that the guys will do a solo video. Then, somewhere along the line, the directors offer them head for a bit more money. These directors are often of average appearance, the sort of guys you wouldn’t expect to see in front of the camera. I’ve heard people criticize this sort of video, saying, “Ewww, who wants to see that fat old dude suck off that young hottie?” But people of average appearance find it hot, I think, to see a hot guy with a not-so-hot guy, since they can fantasize about being with the hot person themselves. That being said, there are also super-hot lechers in the biz. Web pioneer Chris Geary, a giant muscleman who made a name for himself with his massive free website, ChrisGeary.com, makes porn of this genre at his pay site, HornyModelBoys.com.

OOZING WITH ENERGY: KEITH HARING

Whether it is a vase he created in collaboration with graffiti artist LAII, a panel of a screen, or something that appears to have no purpose at all, the objects he chooses to paint come across with a power that give them a talismanic air. His line galvanizes the surface of each piece, and his energetic brush endows the most banal things with a sense of importance. The same can be said of his infamous subway drawings which were taken off the walls of New York City subway stations. In the Shafrazi show there are eight large drawings (white chalk on black paper) preserved from the early 80s behind plexiglas or shadow boxed. They are arranged in one room and they appear as impressive relics of a bygone age. They feel quick and smart, oozing with energy. The exhibition’s pinnacle, they were created in situ stemming from the news of the day, their location, or the artist’s whim.In contrast to the objects and subway drawings, Haring’s two-dimensional images are less powerful and at their worst they can feel ham-fisted.

ARE MEN DUMB STUPID PIGS? YES!

In The Male Brain, Louann Brizendine, the American psychiatrist, follows up her controversial 2006 bestseller The Female Brain, which famously — and incorrectly — claimed that women use an average of 20,000 words a day compared with only 7,000 for men, and explores how the differences between the male and female brains often lead to the profoundest of misunderstandings and unintended consequences. Her conclusion that the male brain, “marinated in testosterone” since the eighth week of conception, is hardwired to cause men to lie, take risks and suppress their emotions, is equally controversial, appearing to suggest that men’s behaviour is devoid of personal responsibility and social conditioning. Is your teenage son bored and surly? Blame the hormones. If testosterone were beer, Dr Brizendine suggests, a nine-year-old boy would be getting the equivalent of half a pint a day but by the time he is 15, he is awash with the equivalent of nearly two gallons a day of the stuff. It blunts his ability to read facial expressions and heightens his sensitivity to criticism He doesn’t just look bored. He is bored. The testosterone-drenched reward centre in his brain now requires extraordinarily intense sensations to be activated — it’s why he likes all those shoot-em-up video games.
