The New Yorker set Eric Alterman loose on the declining American newspaper industry. "Until recently, newspapers were accustomed to operating as high-margin monopolies. To own the dominant, or only, newspaper in a mid-sized American city was, for many decades, a kind of license to print money. In the Internet age, however, no one has figured out how to rescue the newspaper in the U.S. or abroad," he writes. "Newspapers have created Web sites that benefit from the growth of online advertising, but the sums are not nearly enough to replace the loss in revenue from circulation and print ads." Are models like blog/news mash up The Huffington Post the future of news?

PIERPONT MORGAN and Ron Jeremy wouldn't seem to have much in common at first glance — save for a certain flair with facial hair and similar views on applied contract law. "I don't want a lawyer to tell me what I cannot do; I hire them to tell me how to do what I want to do," the legendary financier is reputed to have said. A century later, not much has changed, the legendary adult film star recently confirmed. "The mainstream business is far more cutthroat than the porn business," Jeremy was quoted as saying. "In porn, almost everything is done with verbal contracts and word of honor. In the mainstream, you can sign a contract an inch thick and still get screwed over."

PARIS (AFP) — Original comic book artwork, from the boy adventurer Tintin to the cowboy Lucky Luke, is breaking into the European fine art market, fetching ever higher prices at auction, experts say.
A 1932 oil painted for by the Belgian author Herge for the cover of "Tintin in America" is the star item at a one-off sale of 650 comic originals Saturday in Paris, with a starting price of 280,000 euros (440,000 dollars)."A museum piece. Sublime," writes the Artcurial gallery and auction house, which is organising the sale, in its catalogue. The Tintin is expected to beat the world record set last year by Yugoslav-born French science fiction artist Enki Bilal with an illustration from his 1994 work "Blue Blood", which sold for 177,000 euros.

WHY WE HAVE PEREZ HILTON TODAY...
Although only one of the most famous group of Pop artists was gay (Warhol), the new art's connection with the work of earlier gay artists such as Rauschenberg and Johns is clear.
Furthermore, during the early 1960s the straight world was beginning to discover the camp sensibility (exemplified by the 1964 publication of Susan Sontag's "Notes on Camp"). Because camp was seen as the triumph of style over substance, when the Pop artists elevated their reviled media images to the arena of "high art," they paralleled the camp celebration of and commitment to the marginal. Pop's self-consciousness about style in both "low" and "high" art inextricably linked it to camp, and resulted in numerous homophobic attacks on Pop and its practitioners.
This resistance by the art world establishment did not prevent the public from enjoying and collecting Pop Art. The Pop artists achieved quick financial success (much to the dismay of the staunchly heterosexual Abstract Expressionists) and soon assumed canonical status in art history.
Its affinities with the camp sensibility have always provided Pop with a substantial gay audience. Pop has subsequently had a significant influence on later art and artists, opening the doors for everything from Photorealism in the 1970s to the ironic examination of the mundane that has dominated much contemporary art.

«Unlike the subjects of his many of his famous portraits from the 1960s and 1970s, Warhol never met a single one of his Jewish “sitters.” All the images in the exhibit were taken from random sources ranging from passport photos to film stills, which are on display next to the portraits. Some of the portraits are also accompanied by preparatory drawings and collages. The source photographs, drawings and collages have not been exhibited alongside the portraits until now.
Revisiting Warhol’s Jews was an important and worthy exercise—especially considering how much more playful Jewish culture has become in the U.S. since 1980. The idea that the religious iconography is inseparable from the pop culture in which it resides no longer seems controversial—well, maybe a little bit.»

ANDY WARHOL & KEITH HARING
«Of course, by the time Haring appeared, Andy Warhol was already the pop of Pop. And Pittsburgh isn't all these two very American artists had in common. Both were prolific, dared to create all over the place, and had the audacity to be informal and casual-seeming about art, which misled critics already determined to find them frivolous. Both were gay and - perhaps, at some level, because of that - had an extra drive to be anointed as popular and famous. Haring didn't have Warhol's range, or complexity, or genius at getting under the skin of the culture. But one could say that Haring became a sort of mini-Warhol and, in one way, went beyond his idol. Because of the tenor of the times, Haring's queer sexuality was much more out-front than Warhol's enigmatic image, behavior, and sensibility. But Warhol's need to belong, to be a star among stars, was shared by Haring. He was an American kid who equated-at least at the beginning-success with public recognition and media validation.»

FROM WARHOL TO ASHLEY ALEXANDRA DUPRE
«Back in 1968, another American futurist, the wealthy conceptual artist Andy Warhol, suggested that in the future "everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes". What Warhol forgot to add was that in the internet age, this fame would not be accompanied with any pecuniary profit. Fame in the digital age is valueless; it can't be cashed at the bank.
Ten days ago, a 22-year-old aspiring musician called Ashley Alexandra Dupré outed herself as the prostitute who, for an hourly rate of $1,000, sold her services to the-then Governor of New York, Eliot Spitzer. For 15 minutes, Dupré became world famous. On the day of her confession, the young woman's MySpace page got 7 million hits, with 3 million people listening to her song, "What We Want". But this ephemeral notoriety hasn't translated into sales for the unsigned artist and it's doubtful that her 15 minutes of global fame earned the amateur musician any more cash than 15 minutes of professional work that she did for Eliot Spitzer.»

I was ecstatic to think that the hippest artist of our time had even glanced at something I had written; my mother and father were considerably less enthusiastic about this turn of events, though they soon came around to the idea of my working for the Pope of Pop when I told them that Governor Nelson Rockefeller had stopped by the Factory to look at paintings one afternoon when I was handing in a review.»

IMAGINARY DIARIES OF A POP ARTIST: HAPPINESS
Marc 22 2008
Read the news. They say they found the happiness gene. Some 50% of people got it others don't. That's good because in the future no money will be lost on bad marketing. They will just find who are the unhappy 50% and then sell them 100 pair of shoes and bags instead of 10 and no longer waisting their time with useless «genetically happy» people. But I guess it will really change a lot of other things too. Before a woman jealous of another one would say: Ok, she's beautiful, but she's dumb". But now one can no longer say that because all the beautiful people are smart and all the ugly ones are dumb. Only artists now are average beautiful or average ugly. I mean, that's why they're artists. So with this new gene thing ugly women will be able to say: I'm not like Angelina but I got the happiness gene and she doesn't» That will keep her shopping for even more magazines with Angelina on the cover. That's great! Went to the office. Worked on my J.LO portrait with babies.

«In the course of the seventies, European critics became far more interested in the Flower pictures and the Disasters, which they could safely regard as Goyaesque. Hence the incomparably strange critical incarnation of Andy Warhol as a warrior of the class struggle in the interpretive work of many critics. To imagine that one might find some hidden subtext of revolutionary socialism in the work of Andy Warhol must have struck many other gay men like myself as particularly absurd and fanciful. And, ultimately, insulting, insofar as it sustained a continued refusal to engage with the most glaringly obvious motif in Warhol's career--his homosexuality.»

«It is no secret that the Chinese contemporary art market is blistering hot, but outsiders have little idea of the murky ways the market's players have been cashing in for the last few years. With hundreds of millions of dollars at stake, China's high-earning artists, speculators, middlemen and critics have come up with some creative ways to manufacture demand. Artists are mass-producing paintings, auction houses are working with artists and dealers to juice up prices, and artists are paying for praise and exhibitions to build up their brands. If it were penny stocks being peddled, all this would go under the label of market manipulation. In the art world it's business as usual. Is there any law to stop a painter from bidding on his own artwork in order to create feverish demand? There isn't.»

THE PHILOSOPHER
«The Philosophy of Andy Warhol is arguably the artist's most important book. Divided into sections covering broad topics such as love, fame, beauty, and economics, this work is an amazing combination of memoir and philosophy, which ultimately paints a portrait of a highly odd man who gravitates to the simplest of pleasures while viewing the world from a perspective that is somehow both disarmingly innocent and ruthlessly accurate. It is also an extremely revealing look at the mental and emotional processes of one of recent history's most original artistic thinkers.»

LOOKING AT AMERICA
«I mean, the fact that I put out a book like this is this notion… the idea of popular; making things easy and accessible and to make people understand that time in history. I’m a by-product of that whole period, weather it was him or further back, Man Ray, or all the different artists that were around at the time… we were all a product of that moment. He stands out because he was so visual -- not only in terms of the way he looked, but in the way he referenced American art exclusively. He didn’t look to Europe for inspiration; he looked at America.»

Every year Artprice compiles a ranking of artists based on the total revenue generated by public sales of each artist's work, with Pablo Picasso invariably taking the number one position on the market podium. Not so in 2007: after nearly 10 years, the champion of modern art has been dethroned by the guru of Pop art, Andy Warhol.
Second in 2006, Warhol became the global market leader in 2007.More than just one name replacing another, this 'event' reflects a veritable sea-change in the auction world. While in the 1990s the very pinnacle of the art market belonged to the impressionists, particularly Auguste Renoir and Claude Monet, and then, after 2000, to the moderns with Pablo Picasso and Gustave Klimt, today, and possibly for some time to come, the market has hoisted contemporary art to the summit of the pyramid.
In 2006, the only members of the contemporary segment among the top 10 artists were Warhol, Lichtenstein and Willem de Kooning, representing Pop art and American abstract expressionism. In 2007, the contemporary presence considerably broadened with the arrival of Francis Bacon, Mark Rothko and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Before that, Facebook, the fast-growing No. 2 player, lost momentum when its plan to turn user recommendations of products and services into ad inventory ran smack into a wall of privacy complaints. While users might be eager to talk about brands and products, as Facebook has maintained, they don't necessarily want to do so with some drooling corporation looking over their shoulders and broadcasting their recommendations to the world in sponsored boxes. On n'a définitivement pas fini de mesurer l'ampleur du désastre causé par trente ans de ghettoisation des sciences humaines et de l'histoire de l'art à travers la seule vision universitaire.
EDUCATION CRISIS:THE FIRST THING THAT MUST BE ACKNOWLEDGED
«Education has failed to adjust to the massive transformation in Western culture since the rise of electronic media. The shift from the era of the printed book to that of television, with its immediacy and global reach, was prophesied by Marshall McLuhan in his revolutionary Understanding Media, which at its publication in 1964 spoke with visionary force to my generation of college students in the United States. But those of us who were in love with the dazzling, darting images of TV and movies, as well as with the surging rhythms of new rock music, had been given through public education a firm foundation in the word and the book. Decade by decade since the 1960s, popular culture, with its stunning commercial success, has gained strength until it now no longer is the brash alternative to organized religion or an effete literary establishment: it is the culture for American students, who outside urban centers have little exposure to the fine arts.»

RONALD FELDMAN
«During this time, Warhol befriended a Jewish New York gallery owner, Ronald Feldman. For years Warhol had prodded Mr. Feldman for ideas. When an Israel-based dealer suggested to Mr. Feldman that Warhol do 10 additional portraits of Meir, Mr. Feldman thought the idea was excessive. But he suggested to Warhol a 10-portrait series of accomplished Jews in the 20th century. Warhol warmed to the idea, so Feldman presented him with a long list of possible subjects. Many of the selected 10 came from Mr. Feldman's urgings, including the final portrait of Louis Brandeis. At the start of the project Warhol didn't even know all of his subjects. In a diary entry he writes, "Who is Martin Buber?"

IMAGINARY DIARIES OF A POP ARTIST: DATING
March 15 2008
Gee, some kid told me to try online dating. I tried but I don't understand it. Guys put pictures of their dick and ass and then write «looking for friendship» . What should I do if i'm looking for sex? Walked down the street and somebody made a smiley on a green traffic light. I was so jealous. Then some guy give me a bible and asked me if I had children. I said no. He told me I was wrong because «children are the orgasm of life». So I asked him how many orgasm he got in his life, but then he got mad and left.
