«My closes friend in the world was Barry Schwartz who is now my business partner. When we were five year old he already had a genius for making money. In the summertime we would stand on the street corner selling ice water for five cents. We would get the ice water from my grand-mother shop's right around the corner. When we were eight we sold newspapers. Barry would buy the Daily News and the Mirror for three cents and we would sell it for seven. And then all of the money would be on the table and Barry wouldn't let me touch any of it. For him to touch money would be like having an orgasm»

«I JUST READ EVERYTHING»

Ms. Paglia observes this phenomenon up close with her 11-year-old son, Lucien, whom she is raising with her ex-partner, Alison Maddex, an artist and public-school teacher who lives 2 miles away. She sees the tacit elevation of "female values"—such as sensitivity, socialization and cooperation—as the main aim of teachers, rather than fostering creative energy and teaching hard geographical and historical facts.
By her lights, things only get worse in higher education. "This PC gender politics thing—the way gender is being taught in the universities—in a very anti-male way, it's all about neutralization of maleness." The result: Upper-middle-class men who are "intimidated" and "can't say anything. . . . They understand the agenda." In other words: They avoid goring certain sacred cows by "never telling the truth to women" about sex, and by keeping "raunchy" thoughts and sexual fantasies to themselves and their laptops.

A man looking for art for his new home has won a $1m Picasso painting with a $138 raffle ticket.

Jeffrey Gonano told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review he's not sure he'll ever hang the masterpiece in his home in Wexford, in western Pennsylvania, given its value.
The 25-year-old Gonano, who works for his family's fire sprinkler business, learned Wednesday that his ticket had won the Paris raffle. Organizers say nearly 50,000 tickets were sold worldwide, for €100 apiece, to benefit a Lebanese charity. The 1914 work, Man in the Opera Hat, dates from Spanish master Pablo Picasso's cubist period. Picasso died in 1973.
Gonano said he wants to keep the artwork, which features vivid shapes in opaque gouache paint. "Maybe I'll lend it to a museum and let them put it on display rather than putting it in a vault, so other people can enjoy it," he told the newspaper. "It all depends. I don't know what the taxes are or anything."

ANTON PERICH

Anton Perich came to New York in 1970, drawn like many young artists at the time by the mystique of Andy Warhol.  A Croatian by birth, Perich was fresh from four years in Paris where he was part of the avant-garde Letterist art movement, and learned about Warhol through his job organizing weekly film screenings at the American Center in Paris.  His rise in New York was remarkably swift.  During his first visit to the artist bar Max’s Kansas City, Perich gained access to its fabled backroom, where he met Warhol who recruited him as a photographer for his new magazine Interview.  He soon also took up video, acquiring a small portapak video camera, and starting a weekly public access cable television show that often featured stars from the Warhol circle.

«A BOY IS BUTCH IF HE WEIGHS OVER 170 AND HE'S AN ALL AMERICAN FOOTBALL TYPE-A SPILLING OUT MASCULINE MAN»

«WHAT HAPPENED TO ALL THAT TALK A FEW YEARS AGO ABOUT REPAIRING THE AMERICAN «INFRASTRUCTURE?»

This institutional snobbery towards manual labour is not only economically short-sighted (the industry could make a comeback) but also results in a demeaning attitude toward masculinity. One of my favourite moments from the recent Munk Debate titled “The End of Men” was when Camille Paglia pointed out the disregard feminists show for working-class men:
“(They) seem blind to the infrastructure that makes their own work lives possible. It is overwhelmingly men who do the dirty, dangerous work of building roads, pouring concrete, laying bricks, tarring roofs, hanging electrical wires, excavating natural gas and sewage lines, cutting and clearing trees, and bulldozing the landscape for housing developments. It is men who heft and weld the giant steel beams that frame our office buildings … Surely modern women are strong enough now to give credit where credit is due.”

Today Oxford Dictionaries announces selfie as their international Word of the Year 2013. The Oxford Dictionaries Word of the Year is a word or expression that has attracted a great deal of interest during the year to date. Language research conducted by Oxford Dictionaries editors reveals that the frequency of the word selfie in the English language has increased by 17,000% since this time last year.
Selfie can actually be traced back to 2002 when it was used in an Australian online forum.  The word gained momentum throughout the English-speaking world in 2013 as it evolved from a social media buzzword to mainstream shorthand for a self-portrait photograph. Its linguistic productivity is already evident in the creation of numerous related spin-off terms showcasing particular parts of the body like helfie (a picture of one’s hair) and belfie (a picture of one’s posterior); a particular activity – welfie(workout selfie) and drelfie (drunken selfie), and even items of furniture – shelfie andbookshelfie.

«I LIKE MONEY ON THE WALL»

Mr. Moses said that it shouldn’t be all that surprising that a few trophy paintings were selling for more than $100 million, even as the broad market languished. “There are over 2,000 billionaires,” he said. “If they’re putting together an art collection for 10 to 15 percent of their assets, they can invest at least $600 million in art. And a lot of them have many billions. So when they look for a centerpiece for their collections, they’ll reach for over $100 million. That’s not unusual given their relative wealth.”

Warhol is still interesting, and immensely influential: largely responsible, for good or ill, for Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst and Lady Gaga.
