"Gays are the molecular opposites of blacks," Ann Coulter tells a room full of gay men (some of them black), because "everybody likes the gays moving in next door." Afterward they hug her, beg for photos, and thank her "for saying what needs to be said" and "for everything you do»

« Like any religious convert I have discovered the internet terribly late. The more interested I got in the site, the more I thought it could be a useful outlet - showcase, whatever - for artists who don't have dealers. Let them deal directly with collectors.

All that internet browsing has reduced our ability to concentrate on long-form reading, and the greatest victim has been the book. Carr is not merely talking about dumbing down. What he posits is more significant: that human culture has been built steadily over our literate history by deep and meditative reading, and the internet threatens to undo this process. Many of us, for instance, have read War and Peace in a calm and meditative state, and absorbed not only the words and information but also the ideas and significances, and transferred those into our long-term memory. As such, each of us carries part of the weight of human culture in our minds. Should we abandon the book, we would also abandon this collective knowledge, leaving it to be arbitrarily outsourced to Google searches and Wikipedia. Carr is also deeply wedded to the predominance of the single linear thought that is represented by the book – a closed form without hyperlinks, bright flashing adverts and email distractions. He recalls Steven Johnson's brilliant line in Everything Bad is Good For You that reading a book "understimulates the senses", and argues that this is a good thing. But what Johnson actually wrote in Everything Bad... pre-empts Carr. Johnson found that the human brain can deal with far more than a mere linear narrative and has a natural hunger for complex thought, from the intricate political and cultural references in The Simpsons to the expansiveness of networked computer games. Witness, also, the phenomenon of The Wire. It was not a book, but was frequently referred to as Dickensian, required an extended attention span, and has been committed to our culture as a 21st-century reference point. It could hardly be called shallow or easily forgotten.

I was telling her how we got hijacked by the male gay agenda, the idea of gay being a choice-less situation, and so on. The Feminism part went out the window. And lesbianism w/o feminism lacks a vitality I took for granted in the 70’s. It was a choice for me and when Jill said “every woman is a lesbian” it was that way in the seventies. We who got turned on to Feminism, straight, curly, or “born” lesbian, “came out” in droves.
As the U.S. economy has transitioned from brawn to brain over the past three decades, a growing number of women have gone off to work. Men’s share of the labor force has declined from 70 percent in 1945 to less than 50 percent today, and in the country’s biggest cities, young, single, childless women—that is, the next generation—earn 8 percent more than their male peers. Women have matched or overtaken men as a percentage of students in college and graduate school, while men have retained their lead in alcoholism, suicide, homelessness, violence, and criminality.

HARTFORD, Conn. — Jill Johnston, who chronicled feminism, lesbianism and upheaval in the 1960s and 1970s as a weekly columnist for the Village Voice, has died. She was 81. Her spouse, Ingrid Nyeboe, says Johnston died Saturday at Hartford Hospital from complications from a stroke she suffered earlier this month. The couple lived in Sharon in northwestern Connecticut. Johnston began as a Village Voice dance critic in 1959. Her website says she adopted a "daring, experimental" writing style in the late 1960s in writing her weekly cultural column, a style she said she later tried to undo. Her 1973 book, "Lesbian Nation: The Feminist Solution," challenged male-dominated society and has been described as a "bible for militant feminists."

NICE guys knew it, now two studies have confirmed it: bad boys get the most girls. The finding may help explain why a nasty suite of antisocial personality traits known as the "dark triad" persists in the human population, despite their potentially grave cultural costs. The traits are the self-obsession of narcissism; the impulsive, thrill-seeking and callous behaviour of psychopaths; and the deceitful and exploitative nature of Machiavellianism. At their extreme, these traits would be highly detrimental for life in traditional human societies. People with these personalities risk being shunned by others and shut out of relationships, leaving them without a mate, hungry and vulnerable to predators. But being just slightly evil could have an upside: a prolific sex life, says Peter Jonason at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces.

After spending his career, "writing about the pulsating, driving life force that is male sexuality", Roth, nearing 70, "provides a telling insight into what sex means for men". PARIS — When Karl Lagerfeld joined Chanel in the 1980s, he was so picky about the advertising photos on offer he was told to go shoot them himself. He took the bait, kicking off a love affair with the art form."Back in those days, press photos for fashion collections existed, but they would be shot either by beginners, or has-beens," he told AFP ahead of the opening of a major exhibition of his photography in Paris. «One season, in 1987, Chanel's image director showed me one, two press packs -- and at the third he said, 'If you are so difficult, why don't you do it yourself'," said the German fashion maestro, now in his late seventies. To begin with he was, he says, "an absolute beginner, like people who snap pictures with their mobile phones today".But the experiment took off -- and with it grew a passion for alternative and in some cases long-forgotten developing techniques, and their effects on grain, colour and texture, all on ample display in the Paris show. For six weeks starting Wednesday, the French capital's Maison Europeenne de la Photographie is exhibiting some 400 of Lagerfeld's images, shot around the world, "mostly with a basic little Fuji, that I can carry around with me."

Now scientists have confirmed that being in the presence of a pretty woman really does scramble the male brain. A study has revealed that men who spend just a few minutes in the company of an attractive female perform less well in tests designed to measure brain function.Researchers suggest that men use up so much of their brain function - or 'cognitive resources' - trying to impress beautiful women, they have little left for other tasks.Psychologists at Radboud University in The Netherlands carried out the study using 40 male students. Each performed a standard memory test, then spent seven minutes chatting to male or female members of the research team before repeating the test. The results, published in the Journal of Experimental and Social Psychology , showed men were slower and less accurate after trying to impress the women. The more they were attracted to them, the worse their score.

The work now on display at Versailles has been painstakingly produced by a team of assistants employed by Murakami’s studio and company, Kaikai Kiki, which he founded in 2001. But despite building a career on producing manga-inspired sculptures and comic-style prints in the factories of his company, the artist says he now plans to return to his first love: painting.“I am now nearly 50 years old, I have created my company, and created my world,” Murakami told us while preparing for his retrospective. “The works you see behind you are the production of a team of assistants. Now that the situation permits, it is the moment to do my own work by my own hand.” Although his work has been heavily influenced by manga, anime and videogames, Murakami studied painting for 11 years at the National University of Fine Arts and Music in Tokyo. In 1996 he set up the Hiropon Factory, a nod to Andy Warhol, and precursor of Kaikai Kiki.

The average auction price for a Hirst work in 2008 was $831,000. So far in 2010 it is down to $136,000, a sum that does not even take into account the many lots that failed to find buyers. With prices down to 2002 levels, the artist’s work is outperforming the S&P 500, but is lagging well behind Artnet’s C50 contemporary art index, an industrial average of the 50 most traded post-war artists (see chart 2). The only Hirst pieces that are showing signs of recovery are butterfly paintings, particularly the wing-only works that evoke kaleidoscopes and stained-glass windows.
