Culture Monster has seen a picture of the global art market, and it looks very much like a portobello mushroom. The glimpse came not in a photograph, painting or drawing, but from the 83-page annual “TEFAF Art Market Report” issued recently by the European Fine Art Foundation.

It found that the art business rests on a very slender stem of prized artists whose work has sprouted a vast canopy of cash, paid overwhelmingly by a coterie of 600,000 or so global millionaires who qualify as “mid- to high-level art collectors.”

The report found that 8% of the art auctioned worldwide in 2013 accounted for 82% of the money spent. In the United States, the ratio was even more skewed: 7.5% of the works auctioned raked in 91.2% of the bucks.

En 2013, le marché de l'art a progressé de plus de 13% pour atteindre un niveau historique, la Chine conservant de justesse sa première place devant les États-Unis, vient d'annoncer Artprice, qui rendra public son rapport dans une dizaine de jours. Le produit des ventes aux enchères publiques d'œuvres d'art dans le monde (peintures, sculptures, dessins, photographies, estampes) a totalisé 12,05 milliards de dollars (hors frais) l'an dernier.

Ce rebond survient après une baisse de plus de 9% en 2012 à 10,64 milliards de dollars (chiffres révisés), essentiellement imputable à une forte contraction du marché chinois alors que les États-Unis regagnaient du terrain. Le produit des ventes en 2013 est ainsi en hausse de 2,3% par rapport à 2011, année du précédent record avec 11,78 milliards de dollars.

L'Américain Andy Warhol est demeuré numéro un au palmarès des enchères mondiales en 2013, juste devant Pablo Picasso, le Chinois Zhang Daqian passant à la troisième place, a annoncé mercredi la société Artprice en exclusivité à l'AFP.

L'année a été marquée "par un repositionnement" des artistes occidentaux qui avaient cédé du terrain face à certains artistes chinois, dont Zhang Daqian qui était premier en 2011, souligne le numéro un des données sur le marché de l'art.

Avec des ventes cumulées de plus de 367 millions de dollars (hors frais), Andy Warhol (1928-1987), roi du Pop art, trône en haut du podium. Son enchère maximale l'an dernier a été de 94 millions de dollars.

Le maître de l'art moderne Picasso (1881-1973), numéro trois en 2012, regagne une place, avec 361 millions de dollars de ventes cumulées.
