CREATIVE YEARS
«The miracle years were 1961-1964 the years in which his astonishing output consisted in the kind of art that could not get through Canadian customs without being taxed, the most original art of its era that looked exatly like nothing but copies of common items».

QUERELLE
«We went over to where Fassbinder was filming this movie called «Querelle» by Genet. Brad Davis is the star of it. I got my picture taken with Brad and I got his autograph on an ashtray for Jon. Met Fassbinder and he was wearing outrageous clothes, the leopard-skin jodhpurs, and one of the guys standing there said he thought Fassbinder had dressed up like that just for me because he usually wears just plain black leather. He looked like a circus trainer. And Brad Davis looks so strange, so delicate-looking. Much better than he did on the cover of Interview».

PAINT THIS!
«When a youthful, white-haired commercial artist named Andy Warhol brought his portfolio to the Castelli gallery manager Ivan Karp admiringly studied his lively technique but hated the subject matter. «I don't know what to paint» conceded Warhol. So Karp disappeared into the back room and rummaged in the cupboard next to an old hot plate. «Pain this» he said and plunked down a can of Campbell's tomato soup».

ALL ABOUT YOUTH
When talking about Andy Warhol many people will fail to see how the youth aspect was fundamental in his life. More than the love of young people themselves Warhol was in love with youth. He wrote in his diaries how he felt so lucky to be working with 19 years old. And during all his carrer he associated himself with the new young talent of the moment: From Gerard Malenga in the sixties to Christopher Makos, David Lachapelle, Keith Haring and Jean Michel Basquiat later on. One thing is sure. His constant desire to move into new directions throughout his career was also clearly an attempt to be still relevant to young people. He would be happy to see the result today...
CELEBRITY MAGAZINE CULTURE
Nowadays celebrity and gossip magazines are more popular than ever. And the public just can't get enough of it. If the titles change over the years the rules remain the same. Warhol who himself was a big fan of those magazines used to say: You never get to hear that some parts of being successful aren't so great or that the overnight success took working like a dog all the time for twenty years, or that someone who's doing really weell on the outside is working like crazy to overcome lots of problems on the inside».

GREAT BODIES
«So many people have such great bodies today that the sort of lumpy, sit around the house flab that used to be «normal» now looks really bad. You can't go anyplace in America without seeing boys and girls and men and women who look like they've been professional athletes their entire lives».

« I like boring things. I like things to be exactly the same over and over and over again...Because the more you look at the same thing, the more the meaning goes away, and the better and emptier you feel».

FROM ANDY WARHOL TO AMERICAN IDOL: BEST OF THE WORST
In the 1991 documentary «The life and times of Andy Warhol Superstar» Tom Wolfe recalled how the Warhol vision was fundamentally opposed to the one of Abstract Expressionists. While they despised the commercial world Warhol embraced it without reserve. In the words of Wolfe the Warhol attitude was: «Oh it's so horrible I love it!» And these days that very same idea is the one triumphing on American Idol or any other talent show.

WARHOL 20 YEARS LATER
«There are many shadowy-and particularly American-coupling in Warhol. He is naive but but jaded, innocent but corrupt. He can be young and old. He's surrounded by drugs but super-clean himself. He's an insider and outsider. Was Warhol a celebrity or a groupie? Both».
