Following closely the format of Interview magazine, Andy Warhol's TV was a weekly half-hour show consisting of conversations between, for exemple, Henry Geldzahler and Diana Vreeland, fashion shows, and informal at -home visits with up-and-coming rock stars like Debbie Harry of Blondie. With his art director's eye, Andy made sure it was always visually appealing, going back in a sense to the concept of his earliest films, painting on the television screen. It was, like so many things he essayed outside of painting, well done, but just a bit ahead of its time.

Mr. Hirst started the spot series in 1986. “At the time I was doing sort of collages that were a bit like Nicholas de Staël or Hans Hoffmann paintings and I was resolving a lot of formal problems with color,” he said. “What made me keep doing them is they always looked great. The idea was that it was an endless series. It’s a conceptual idea rather than reality.”
The earliest spot paintings were done directly on the wall, he added, “so they looked like a giant machine had painted them.”
“I was sort of trying to deny that there was an artist, so there was this kind of infinitely happy paintings,” Mr. Hirst said. But over the years his idea has gone through many transformations. He went through a phase where he wanted to make sure the viewer would know the paintings were man-made.

The piece’s two contrasting styles -- “cubism and classicism forged together in a single painting” — dovetail, Condo says, with West’s music, with its “layers of different styles happening simultaneously.” What did Kanye see in the picture that made him like it? “His tragedy was a kind of exile that Kanye imposed upon himself,” Condo says. “He was free from exile by having the cathartic moment in the image. He’s alive in the painting, you know what I mean? In a strange way it’s like, he opened his eyes.”
