«GOOD BUSINESS IS THE BEST ART»

«Andy Warhol's Pop Art solo debut at the Ferus Gallrey in Los Angeles in july 1962 consisted of silkscreened paintings of larger-than-life cans of the thirty-two available flavors of Campbell's Soup priced at $100 each. Only six sold during the show, the first one to actor Dennis Hopper, but the gallerist Irving Blum bought those back to keep the set together, paying Warhol $1000 over ten months for the set. In 1996 Blum sold the set to MOMA for $15 millions.

«I THINK THE YOUTH OF TODAY ARE TERRIFIC»

YOUTH WITHOUT COCKINESS IS NO YOUTH AT ALL

«MUSCLES ARE GREAT: EVERYBODY SHOULD HAVE AT LEAST ONE THAT THEY CAN SHOW OFF»

SIZE MATTERS

Increasingly, the artworks on display are just as enormous, requiring cranes and teams of workers to display. Museums were once the only potential buyers for such room-filling pieces, but over the past decade an influx of wealthy collectors around the world has started buying ever-larger art trophies. All of it has prompted dealers to seek out artists whose work is hefty enough to stand out from afar—a prioritizing by size that never occurred in past generations, dealers say.

«MORE THAN ANYTHING PEOPLE JUST WANT STARS»

PETER BLAKE ON DAMIEN HIRST

He refutes the notion that money and record-breaking prices at auction have supplanted creativity as their motivation. "In Damien's case, his work is about money. But if the money stopped tomorrow, he'd be perfectly happy. He's down there in Devon right now looking after the kids, painting on his own in the studio, and he'd settle for that."The diamond skull was about making something that was worth £50 million, he didn't want the £50 million. The work has often been about the phenomena of money. In his case it's a valid reason to be painting. He's not greedy or avaricious, he's generous to other people. If it stopped tomorrow, he would have made his point. Damien's unique.

«EVERYTHING IS BEAUTIFUL»

«IT'S CALLED GOSSIP AND OF COURSE IT'S AN OBSESSION OF MINE»

Well, technically they shared him — and we’ll use the terms “dated” and “boyfriend” very loosely. The man in question is Jacques de Bascher de Beaumarchais, an affluent quasi-aristocrat played in the film by Louis Garrel. In the early ’70s, de Bascher became the darling of the Parisian fashion scene and the object of Lagerfeld’s affection. Then, the It boy began an affair with Saint Laurent in 1973, fueling the rivalry between the two influential designers. The film suggests Bergé prompted their split. Either way, the relationship didn’t last, and the lothario died of complications from AIDS in 1989.

«It is hard to imagine a business more custom-made for money laundering, with million-dollar sales conducted in secrecy and with virtually no oversight. YOUTH IS MADE TO BE COCKY AND SHOW OFF

PHILOSOPHY FOR THE 21st CENTURY: RELIGION

Islam claim the message to jews and christians was incomplete. Expect the rise of Mormons claiming the same in the future, but for the three previous religions.

JOUISSIF D'INTELLIGENCE

IN THE FUTURE EVERYONE WILL BE NARCISSISTIC FOR FIFTEEN MINUTES

«I JUST READ EVERYTHING»

Jobs, and the preparation of students for them, should be front and center in the thinking of educators. The idea that college is a contemplative realm of humanistic inquiry, removed from vulgar material needs, is nonsense. The humanities have been gutted by four decades of pretentious postmodernist theory and insular identity politics. They bear little relationship to the liberal arts of broad perspective and profound erudition that I was lucky enough to experience in college in the 1960s.
Having taught in art schools for most of my four decades in the classroom, I am used to having students who work with their hands—ceramicists, weavers, woodworkers, metal smiths, jazz drummers. There is a calm, centered, Zen-like engagement with the physical world in their lives. In contrast, I see glib, cynical, neurotic elite-school graduates roiling everywhere in journalism and the media. They have been ill-served by their trendy, word-centered educations.

MAKING ART

Both Andy and Man Ray, with whom I worked in the seventies, taught me the same thing; don't think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide whether it's good or bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they're deciding, make even more art.
