THE BEAUTY OBSESSION

«Some people think it's easier for beauties, but actually it can work out a lot of different ways. If you're beautiful you might have a pea-brain. If you're not beautiful you might not have a pea-brain, so it depends on the pea-brain and the beauty. The size of the beauty. And the pea-brain.»

-The philosophy of Andy Warhol

YOKO ONO

«Oh, I ran into a boy whose job is to go shopping for John and Yoko Ono, to buy them clothes and things. I asked him if they'd ever made him bring anything back and he said just once. I asked him if they'd ever wore any of the clothes they bought since they don't go out, and he said; «They're going to make a comeback. They've been wearing them to the studio.»

«I JUST THINK ENTERTAINMENT IS THE BEST MESSAGE»

«I LIKE MONEY ON THE WALL»

Artnet’s annual auction sales report is out for 2014. Here’s the lowdown: The global auction market ascended to $16.1 billion, making 2014 the third year in a row that the value of fine art has increased. The market grew over 12 percent in 2014, as compared to 2013. The United States, mainland China, and the United Kingdom led the pack, though China experienced a decrease in growth compared to 2013. Unsurprisingly, Sotheby’s and Christie’s New York came out on top for auction houses, accounting for over 40 percent of global fourth quarter sales. Artists who ranked highest in market value were Andy Warhol and Pablo Picasso, bringing in $1.1 billion. Living artists who performed at the highest value were Gerhard Richter ($294 million), Jeff Koons ($170 million), and Christopher Wool ($100 million). No female artists placed in the top 40 spots of the year-end ranking, though Georgia O’Keeffe ranked 41st.

«I WANT MORE FAME»

Want to know which artists have been trending this year? Collectors, dealers, and art neophytes alike comb our virtual pages for artist information. So who were they all most curious about in 2014? Some of the top searches have crept in from left field, but the top spots go toWarholPicasso, and Banksy, oh my!
Those biggies along with Lichtenstein have secured the top four places a second year running. The artists that got bumped off of last year's list?Alexander CalderVik Muniz and Jean-Michel Basquiat all failed to inspire the artnet search engine in 2014. Underdog Keith Haring leaps to the front lines at number five.

While the SEC regulates stock trading and all vigilant eyes are on Wall Street to spot potential abuses, Nouriel Roubini spoke at the Economic Forum at Davos about the corruption that surrounds the art market, and advocated for increased regulation, as reported by artnews.com.Nouriel Roubini who has worked at the World Bank, the Bank of Israel and the IMF, is currently an economist at NYU’s Stern School and an art collector himself, said the problems with the art market are rife and self-regulation is required if the industry wants to avoid external scrutiny and rules. “Whether we like it or not,” Roubini said, “art is used for tax avoidance and evasion. It can be used for money laundering. You can buy something for half a million, not show a passport, ship it. Plenty of people are using it for laundering … While art looks as if it is all about beauty, as a business, it is full of shady stuff. We should correct it or it will be undermined over time.”

Iwona Blazwick is talking about the first time she saw a piece of work byDamien Hirst. Blazwick was a young curator at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) in London and Hirst, a student at the time, had submitted one of his now-famous medicine cabinets to an open competition. “It was the fact that it was so squeaky clean, so brand new, so exquisitely realised,” she says. “The drugs inside it were also very particular. It was just extraordinary.” She pauses, then says, “Do you know, I could have bought it for a thousand quid – but I didn’t have a thousand quid! Even then, Damien was very specific about his prices.” With this she throws her head back and laughs.

On January 22, Phillips will offer Keith Haring’s Totem (1988) as part of its Evening Sale in London. The American artist, best known for his line-based graphic expressions, initially set out to study commercial art in Pittsburgh, but soon moved to New York, where he found his niche in an emerging scene that included artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Kenny Scharf.

“The drawings I do have very little to do with classical, post-renaissance drawings, where you try to imitate life or make it appear to be lifelike,” Haring said. “My drawings don’t try to imitate life; they try to create life, to invent life.” This particular work is number 7/35 of Haring’s series of carved plywood totems painted with colored enamel. On the reverse is a plaque that contains Haring’s signature, the date “88,” and the edition written in black felt-tip pen.

When sightings of Leonardo DiCaprio and Miley Cyrus (dressed as deranged vagabonds) at Art Basel in Miami cause a stir, one wonders what remains of the art world. Porn is being made and watched in the Middle East, and millions more are watching it around the planet. In fact, some of the world’s top porn consumers come out of the Middle East. According to data released by Google, six of the top eight porn-searching countries are Muslim states. Pakistan tops the list at number one, followed by Egypt at number two. Iran, Morocco, Saudi Arabia and Turkey come in at numbers four, five, seven and eight, respectively. Pakistan leads the way in porn searches for animals like pigs, donkeys, dogs, cats and snakes.

«IT'S CALLED GOSSIP AND OF COURSE IT'S AN OBSESSION OF MINE»

292 Lafayette Street is a legendary address in New York City. It was formerly the site of graffiti artist Keith Haring’s store, the Pop Shop. Haring took Andy Warhol’s commercialization of his art to the next level by turning his drawings into various items, from key chains to pillows. Today the address belongs to Doug Abraham’s Bess NYC, which is updating that tradition in a totally new way: It has found an unusual path to success in the fashion world through the creative use of studs on clothing—including army jackets, flannel tees, and more. Now the shop has morphed into an art gallery as well, with Abraham selling his appropriated art combining anything, from commercial advertising to porn and everything in between. It has become a cult favorite on Instagram, and some of the works are available for sale at the store. A modern version of Pop art if ever there was one.

ANDY WARHOL ON PRO WRESTLERS: «WHAT REAL GYMNASTS THEY ARE»

«I JUST READ EVERYTHING»

“Valentino’s party last year had a ‘no kids’ rule,” sniffed a Gstaad source. “But Madonna brought all her kids anyway, and it screwed up the seating for the party.”

«ANDY THOUGHT A LOT ABOUT JEWS» -BOB COLACELLO

It takes something less than an advanced Sabermetrician to confirm that, yes, Jews are underrepresented at the highest echelon of major professional athletics. Sports broadcasters? We can do that. Sports agents? In abundance. Sports commissioners? Currently the men atop three of the “Big Four” leagues are Jewish. Owners? Absolutely: During my youth in the Midwest, the owners of the five nearest NBA franchises had the surnames Simon, Gilbert, Davidson, Reinsdorf, and Kohl.
Players? Not so much.
