POST WARHOL PREDICTION: IN THE FUTURE PARIS HILTON WILL LAUNCH A «HAUTE COUTURE BURQINI» COLLECTION FOR THE MIDDLE EAST

«IT'S CALLED GOSSIP AND OF COURSE IT'S AN OBSESSION OF MINE»

Apparently, photos of Paris emerged this week of her cavorting on the Arabian beach wearing a wee bikini. Oops. The Daily Express reported: "Paris had made a big public speech, saying how much she loved the Middle East and respected its culture. But the following day she was prancing around on the beach in her bikini and posing provocatively. Bosses warned her Western tourists have been jailed for flouting the rules." So listen up: It ain't Paris, Paris.

«THESE KIDS, IF YOU SAW THEM ON THE STREET, YOU WOULD NEVER THINK THEY WERE GAY. THEY LOOK LIKE L.A KIDS»-ANDY WARHOL

Remember when Elton John and the Pet Shop Boys had to defend Eminem from GLADD? Well it seems a lot happened since then. Namely more and more gay rapper boys and girls taking their place within the larger hip hop community. To get the pulse of that growing scene I asked some questions to the guys involved in the documentary film Pick Up The Mic. From the state of gay hip hop today, gay men's love -hate relationship with the genre to the future of gay Hip Hop porn...

Q- It seems Hip Hop is moving in so many directions now and influences so many other musical genres. Do you see the same trend in gay hip hop as well?

A- «Definitely» say Pick Up The Mic filmmaker Alex Hinton. «The film really showcases a wide array of styles from the roots and soul inspired leanings of Deep Dickollective to the gangsta styles of JenRo and the HIP HOP with pop hooks of God-Des to the raunchy but hilarious styling of Jonny Dangerous. There is something for every Hip Hop fan in this scene".

Over the years there have been a lot of talk about the place of gay artists in the larger hip hop community. The rapidity of that progress may been seen differently by some but there's clearly a trend towards growing acceptance. «I personally have found that much of the black music industry have given me nothing but respect for the amount of success I have achieved, all without any manager or record label behind me» says British rapper QBOY. «Having said that you have to wonder why I don't have either of those two support frames-it's because the music industry as a whole don't know what to do with me. They believe I don't fit their idea or market for hip hop because I'm gay and I don't fit their gay market because I'm hip hop. However attitudes are changing» he adds. For Alex Hinton some progress cannot be denied: «We did get a 4 page spread about the scene in URB magazine a straight urban music and lifestyle mag. And artists like JenRo and Scream Club are working in the straight hip hop scene guesting on tracks and performing confortably well with straight rappers».

What about the other way around now? People always talk about homophobia in the hip hop community but is there also some prejudice towards hip hop among the mainstream gay community? «Well historically the gay community has had a prejudice to hip hop as the homophobic lyrics of some hip hop songs have been magnified by watchdogs groups like GLAAD. Homophobia exists everywhere in the music industry and musical forms. It just seems that hip hop has been targeted as it can be demonized by some as as the other since it is so often showcased as just a hyper masculinized form of music» says Hinton. «But the film really proves witness that many members of the gay community grew up on hip hop and they don't feel that it is this negative force. They feel that it is their true medium to express themselves. »

Go to most gay bars and it won't be often that some shirtless pumped up guy will be dancing on Hip Hop tracks. For one QBOY has a lot to say about the so called mainstream gay culture:«There is a lot of underlying racism in mainstream gay culture, there has not often been much visible black gay men and lesbians with that scene and now the traditional black culture is creating it's own path within the gay community, the mainstream gay scene is having to adjust not all with ease.» Fortunately personal experience often alter that general impression: «There is also something I call rap-phobia where people's idea of what rap is about is associated with guns, drugs, crime, violence, gangsta culture and somebody shouting in an angry intimidating fashion». add QBOY. «This is because the only conception with rap is the mainstream junk that is so accessible to them. However I have found that many people who have seen me perform parents, grand parents, lesbians and gay men in their fifties none of whom have never identified with rap before all come to me at the end and say: you know I never I liked rap but I like you».

In that world of testosterone-charged young male bravado, Miss Money is for many something of an oddity. A gay christian hip hop artist. And as a female she got a somewhat different opinion about all that male swaggering thing and the so called homophobia of Hip Hop : «I don't think there are prejudices but just reaction to the hate spewed at gay people. You'd be prejudiced too if every man with a mic and knowledge of a few vowels said faggot.....The hip hop males are so ever indulged in testosterone they're the first to hate on gay people but anyone with common sense can see it's their own insecurity . It really has nothing do us gay people».

Before sex was used to sell music . Now music is increasingly used to sell sex. Especially to bring the hip hop community to the adult market. We all know that past Snoop's Doggystyle video and today there's clearly a growing foray of Hip Hop into porn. In the past designer Mark Ecko had his clothes used in some xxx movies and nowadays we hear more and more about rappers tempted to act as MC (if not performing themselves) in some xxx skin flick. Are gay rappers going to follow that trend? Is a move into porn going to be the next ultimate street cred statement? « I don't see why not, I can see Jonny [Dangerous) doing it for sure. He He! In fact both myself and Houston Bernard are on the soundtrack to a sexually charged gay film called OPen Cam» (www.opencammovie.com/music.html/) says QBOY.

What is Jonny Dangerous himself thinking of the idea? Not suprisingly the rapper known for his sexually graphic lyrics is quite enthusiastic about it. «You're talking to the king of dirty gay hip hop. I would definitely rock a porn movie and have my shit played on the background...Cuz when you think of dirty gay sex how can you not think of Johnny Dangerous? Just listening to some of his lyrics easily prove his point:

«Laid up on the couch seductively
Hand up on my knee, whispered how much he wanted me
Bitin' on my lip fantasizing 'bout that dick
that he describe to be eight long and five inches thick"

Then the week ended with the biggest celebrity story of the decade - the death of Michael Jackson. TMZ.com, a rival of PerezHilton.com, broke the news first. Perez reacted in his usual style, by publishing a post stating he doubted the singer was ill, and accusing Jackson and his team of staging a stunt in order to get him out of the upcoming 50-date run of concerts in London. Hours later, Jackson was declared dead, and Hilton quietly removed the post from the site.

For me, the lesson of Columbine is that primary and secondary education, as it gradually expanded over the past century, has massive systemic problems. We are warehousing students from childhood to early adulthood, channeling them toward middle-class professional jobs that they may or may not want. Young, male, hormonally driven energy is trapped and stultified by school, with its sterile regimentation into cubical classrooms and cramped rows of seats.

«MORE THAN ANYTHING PEOPLE JUST WANT STARS»

Q: You ask in the book whether crowds of mourners fall victim to "false gods because they are seeking spiritual fulfillment" through celebrity icons they will never know. What do make of the crowds mourning Jackson's death?

A: Valentino's death created the same kind of mass hysteria and reaction. But those actions and reactions have a deeper meaning than just pure base fanaticism. The lives of these people, and their deaths, have a real ability to empower people to find a sense of meaning that is so dramatic, so strong. They are indications of very deep and strong connection that doesn't just border on the religious, but is religious — in the sense that these feelings, connections and investments bear on moral value systems, a person's identity and history.

Q: Jackson was raised a Jehovah's Witness and converted to the Nation of Islam, and later, mainstream Islam. You're the go-to expert on death rites. What can we expect in terms of a funeral?

A: I was wondering that myself. It's hard to predict. I would not expect cremation, if he was really a Muslim at the end of his life. I hate to say this, but his whole life was a circus in a lot of ways, so I don't know if his funeral won't be the same.

Reminiscing about Keith Haring and the Paradise Garage, Ann Magnuson wrote that "dancing was our pagan rite and the Paradise Garage, the first multi-cultural gay dance club, became Keith's Pantheon." In his journals, Haring wrote, "I don't know if you know how important the Paradise Garage is, at least for me and the tribe of people who have shared many a collective spiritual experience there. The Garage also changed or affected my life incredibly through various 're-imprinting' experiences and transformations." Haring would even schedule his trips around the Garage, "leaving on Sundays and returning before or on Saturdays."The Paradise Garage was a club on the border of SoHo that was central to Keith Haring's world from the early 1980s until it closed in 1987.

PHILOSOPHY FOR THE 21st CENTURY: FAMOUS

In the Internet age worldwide fame à la Susan Boyle will be more and more common. Long lasting fame however will be more and more difficult.

YOUTH WITHOUT COCKINESS IS NO YOUTH AT ALL

FAME IN THE 21st CENTURY

Fame on the level that Mr. Jackson achieved is all but impossible for pop culture heroes today, and quite likely it will never be possible again. On the most basic level, this is matter of business and math. Michael Jackson has sold an estimated 100 million copies worldwide of the 1982 album “Thriller,” which spent more than 31 weeks at the top of the Billboard charts.
It’s one of those high-water marks that nobody will touch, because record stores are vanishing, and along with them, megahit albums are vanishing, too. A big week on the Billboard charts is a quarter-million units sold, which is about the number of units the Jonas Brothers moved last week with their latest release, which opened at No. 1. And it’s rare for an album to last even three weeks at the top.People who buy music tend these days to buy — or steal it — online, a song at time.

«I JUST READ EVERYTHING»

Celebrities tap into the public's primal fantasies and basic emotions, lifting people from their everyday lives and making them believe anything is possible, said Dr. John Lucas, a clinical assistant professor of psychology at Weill Cornell Medical College and an assistant attending psychiatrist at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. In the case of Jackson, with what appeared to be numerous plastic surgeries and skin bleaching, "the weirdness resonates with our own internal suppressed hidden wishes -- for immortality, gratification of sexual impulses and our wish for ageless beauty," Lucas said...."What we know of them [celebrities] through People magazine and other media sources fills a gaping and painful void in our lives," Lucas said. The dwindling influence of religion adds to that sense of yearning in people, he added, making the stars' exploits and eccentricities, their loves and losses, more than a form of entertainment. "Religion is faltering, and in the process people are grappling with infantile wishes, with magical thinking," he said.

A spokeswoman for the Los Angeles police department (LAPD) told the Guardian that officers intended to speak to the doctor, and said medical interviews were routine in such cases.

WOMEN IN REVOLT

So let me get this straight. In 2009, People’s Hottest Bachelor is 23-year-old Chace Crawford. And the actor most likely to star in this year’s biggest box office hit is either 19-year-old Daniel Radcliffe, in “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” or 23-year-old Shia LaBeouf, in “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.”Suddenly, I feel very old. It’s as though Hollywood is trying to turn me into a cougar. And I hate that word. A lot. It’s even hard to watch the 44-year-old Sandra Bullock become a “cougar” opposite the 32-year-old Ryan Reynolds in "The Proposal." Compared to LaBeouf and Radcliffe, Reynolds is a grown-up. But in Hollywood, he becomes the boy to Bullock’s woman.I don’t find Crawford, Radcliffe or LaBeouf attractive but I feel as though I’m “supposed” to. Even though LaBeouf is 23, he looks about 16. Watching him opposite Megan Fox, who’s a year younger than he is, is like eavesdropping on a boy going out with his babysitter. It just feels wrong. Instead of getting into the scene, I just want to protect him from this woman who could seemingly eat him alive.

All they do is distort and damage the dignity of the private lives of actors."I have never represented a client who enjoyed being followed by paparazzi or having fabricated stories about their lives in those magazines."An anonymous celebrity weekly editor reportedly said: "You build the story around an emotion. What's happening with poor Jen this week? Well, John Mayer's seeing someone else, and for a woman of her age, that must be awful."So you construct a narrative of what a woman her age may be feeling. The question is: 'How can we construct a story around a set of emotions that our readers are going to relate to?' It can come from a genuine tip, or a photo. Or it can come out of our a**."

TORONTO — Perez Hilton is upset that a gay rights group is criticizing him for using an anti-gay slur during his recent verbal dust-up with will.i.am.The celebrity blogger engaged in a heated war of words with the Black Eyed Peas singer on Monday, alleging that the band's manager had punched him in the eye following the MuchMusic Video Awards. The two men posted various tweets and videos giving their version of events. In one video, Hilton, who is openly gay, said he called will.i.am a "faggot" in the lead-up to the alleged altercation. The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation subsequently issued a statement decrying Hilton's use of the slur, saying it feeds a climate of "hatred and intolerance" toward the gay community.
In an email to The Canadian Press, Hilton - who says he's a former GLAAD employee - said he was upset by the organization's reaction."I am saddened GLAAD chose to victimize me further by criticizing me for how I non-violently dealt with a very scary situation that, unfortunately, turned violent," Hilton wrote Tuesday.

Then again, it is also possible that Paris Hilton is a brilliant satirist, this fully on display by offering this sentence to reporters while promoting the Dubai version of Hilton's television show:“I respect the culture in Dubai — it’s much classier than Las Vegas."Ah, to run through all the classy things Paris Hilton has done in Las Vegas over the years would wear my fingers out. There was the night I watched her walk into a wall at a nightclub. Oh, there is also the infamous night at another nightclub where she used a pot to .... Oh, there I go.Anyway, part of Hilton's satirical genius in this quote, perhaps inadvertent, comes from the fact that these days Dubai actually owns a large chunk of Vegas, having bought stakes in Cirque, a nightclub and restaurant company (Light Group). Its biggest commitment of all is partnering with MGM-Mirage for the massive CityCenter development of hotels, condominiums, stores and casinos on the Strip.

As the Wall Street Journal noted this week in "Guys Left Behind (GLBs)," though we still haven't elected a female president (apparently the yardstick of equality these days), women are making it in terms of college education (nearly 60% of grads are women), political muscle (53% of 2008 electorate were women), market influence (women control 80% of consumer spending) and employment. It was reported earlier this year that women are close to surpassing men in the work force, while unemployment statistics hover at 5.9% for women vs. a higher 7.2% for men. Just over 49% of nonfarm workers are women, according figures released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2008. And despite the largely unequal paychecks drawn by Baby Boomers and Gen X, the gap is closing between male and female urban workers in their 20s.

In February this year, Joe Dallesandro received a Teddy Award at the Berlin International Film Festival for his “achievements as underground film star, gay icon and actor”.While Dallesandro claims to be bisexual, and has a real background of hustling, his homoerotic roles in Andy Warhol’s films seem to be more a product of Warhol’s penchant for the found-object than the actor’s own desire for queer representation. Expanding on his sexuality, Dallesandro explains, “it wasn't that I was sexually attracted to men per se, but you know, if you do something for a while you can acquire a taste for it.” Dallesandro’s ‘queerness’ then seems more a product of circumstance than any genuine identification and investment in non-straight sexuality.

FOR seven of the past eight weeks the front cover of Us Weekly magazine has featured salacious stories about Jon and Kate Gosselin. The Gosselins, who have eight children including sextuplets, are the stars of an obscure American reality-TV programme that briefly became the most watched show on cable. Sensing a surge of interest, other celebrity magazines have piled in with reports of marital disharmony. Even in a recession, tittle-tattle sells.
Buoyed by recession-resistant food, pharmaceutical and shampoo advertisements, gossip magazines have lost fewer advertising pages in the past year than business or news magazines, according to a tally by Mediaweek. The two biggest, People and Us Weekly, each sold more copies last year than they did in 2001. In a world of fragmenting audiences they boast an enormous reach. Fully 43m Americans, about two-thirds of them women, flick through a copy of People each week.

Paris Hilton has said she studied the culture of Dubai to prepare for the Middle East version of her reality show. At the launch of the new edition of her Paris Hilton's My New Best Friend Forever series in Dubai, the 28-year-old said: "I wanted to know everything about this place first because I wanted to make sure everything was OK - I just want to respect everyone here."
The fame-loving Hilton promised to dress conservatively and said her Dubai-based MTV series will be open to women only.
The show's producers insisted there would be no finger pointing or laughing at anybody."I expect to learn a lot here. It's a completely different world," Paris also said. 22 contestants will try their best to become Paris' new BFF in the 20 days she will spend in the Emirates.

Near the top of the talk, Paglia says, “I come here as an atheist who wishes to defend religion.” With constant references in the ROM lecture and in her work to her Italian Catholic background, Paglia is obviously obsessed with and “fascinated” by religion (now, she says, she worships nature instead of “God”), and stresses the point that divorcing religion (and world history, for that matter) from education and cultural literacy — in the way that’s been happening since the rebellious '60s — is dangerous. “We separate young artists from the traditions of the west.” They won't, and can’t, recognize motifs and stories from the past, including the bible

What did the elephant say to the naked man? "How do you breathe through something so small?" Despite the fact the elephant was a little confused, most women agree the size of a man's "trunk" is important. More than half the women polled in Sun Media's Great Canadian Female Sex Survey said size does matter. The Sun Media-Leger Marketing survey polled 1,003 Canadian women above the age of 18, and 41% of those women said size matters a little and 13% said size matters a lot.

«IF WARHOL IS NOT THE AMERICAN DREAM THERE IS NO AMERICAN DREAM» -JOHN WATERS

Commenting on the state of the economy shortly after taking office, President Barack Obama equated the economic downturn with nothing less than "the American Dream in reverse."But what exactly is this elusive American Dream that seems to be slipping away? Vanity Fair writer David Kamp notes that the American Dream is not a static concept. The evolution of this idea is reflected in popular television. In the 1950s, Ralph and Alice Kramden lived in a grubby New York tenement on "The Honeymooners." Just a few years later the American viewing audience could set its sights higher by watching the Cleavers in their modest suburban home on "Leave it to Beaver." By the 1970s, "The Brady Bunch" lived in an even bigger home and could afford a Hawaiian vacation. The families of "Dynasty" and "Dallas" played out their decadent dramas in mansions during the 1980s. All of which led inexorably to the spoiled brats of "Gossip Girl" and "The Hills."

«MORE THAN ANYTHING PEOPLE JUST WANT STARS»

This week Famous points the cheating stick at Victoria Beckham. The 35-year-old is looking thin - no newsflash there - and has pimples on her face. The culprit is not Beckham's diet of watercress and champagne but rather the city of Los Angeles. "LA is making me ugly," Famous declares on behalf of the star.Posh has been there as a virtual single mother ever since David headed off to kick a ball around in Italy and she remained behind with the couple's three sons. A bad move, but the star has refused to stand idly by as the reports of Becks's cheating ways begin to circulate. According to NW, Posh knows she made a big mistake "by leaving him to his own devices in Italy" and is using an arsenal of teensy shorts to lure him back.

ART NOW

Found-object art is hardly news. Back in the 1950s, Rauschenberg himself was christened a neo-Dadaist for reinterpreting Duchamp when he started to incorporate junk — most famously, a stuffed goat and an unmade bed — into his “Combines”. Those early works, with their radical juxtaposition of painting and object, made the artist a legend in his own time. In tandem with the flags and targets of Jasper Johns, Rauschenberg’s lover , the Combines wrested art out of the romanticism of abstract expressionism and paved the way for pop art, conceptualism and arte povera. Since then, the art world has moved on. The painting that Rauschenberg rubbished as reactionary has made a knowing, self-conscious comeback; video has hijacked the issues of temporality that obsessed him and his avant-garde peers; new technologies have made explorations of materiality no longer fashionable.

The sole work of art on the Bischofberger stand, the Warhol was tagged at about $74m, a “competitive price”, according to Bruno Bischofberger, who said it would have been “much higher” a year ago. Trade sources indicated that the work had last sold for about $80m four years ago.

SALVADOR DALI

"A lot of the great trends in art were things Dali anticipated. He was doing benday dot paintings before Lichtenstein, for example; he was doing shooting paintings before Niki de Saint Phalle; Coca-Cola and Mao before Warhol. There was this definite dialogue; he was the precursor to many things that are now esteemed in contemporary art. Even the merger of mass culture and high art — his Venus de Milo with Drawers from 1936, the Lobster Telephone (1936) — bring in commercial objects and say they are worthy of being high art."(Ted) Gott agrees and says that while Dali was living in the St Regis Hotel in Chelsea (which he did for six months of the year from 1949-79, renting an apartment with a studio) he would regularly hold court in the King Cole Bar downstairs."It basically became Dali's private bar," he says. "That's where he would meet all of these people. Andy Warhol and he became quite good friends; he was visited by (James) Rosenquist, Chuck Close — and a teenage Jeff Koons. Even though the official art world in many ways turned against Dali … at the same time you find this older statesman being appreciated by younger artists yet to make their mark."

«EVERYONE MUST HAVE A FANTASY»

They say Lady Gaga’s staying power mostly consists of her ability to always come up with something that is both new and stunning for one reason or another. Following the waves the singer created with the release of her artsy and shocking “Paparazzi” video, she is now back riding the wave of fame – and controversy – with a remix of her new single “Love Game” featuring vocals from none other than shock rocker Marilyn Manson. The two, as unlikely a pair as they might seem at first sight, harbor a deep admiration and respect for each other’s work, which they did not fail to make public in past interviews. As early as 2008, Gaga was speaking about her biggest dream to that date, that of getting up on stage with Manson for a duet, or at least having the pleasure of recording one such track with him. Now she got to see her dream come true, as Manson lent his voice for “Love Game” – and what came out is nothing short of an awesome and unique remix, fans are saying on dedicated forums.

FAME IN THE 21st CENTURY

Let’s be honest: the deification and then vilification of Boyle were both carried out by the public - a public increasingly keen on mass bullying. The internet has changed everything and that includes the nature of fame. Unfortunately, those who wish to be famous haven’t quite picked up on this: they still believe that only a couple of mean gossip columnists and intrusive photographers can harm or upset them: tomorrow’s chip wrappers.Actually, no: not any more. Even our nastiest tabloids’ most vitriolic bile is a caress compared with the stuff that exists online. As for chip wrappers: on the internet, the insults, the abuse, the obscenities are there, a mouse-click away, for eternity... Social networking sites were awash with otherwise apparently nice people making incredibly personal remarks about her appearance and less nice people making unfunny jokes about the kind of sex (brutal, humiliating) that would best suit the virgin Boyle.

The University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop is the most renowned creative-writing program in the world. Sixteen Pulitzer Prize winners and three recent Poet Laureates are graduates of the program. But the school’s official position is that the school had nothing to do with it. “The fact that the Workshop can claim as alumni nationally and internationally prominent poets, novelists, and short story writers is, we believe, more the result of what they brought here than of what they gained from us,” the Iowa Web site explains. Iowa merely admits people who are really good at writing; it puts them up for two years; and then, like the Wizard of Oz, it gives them a diploma. “We continue to look for the most promising talent in the country,” the school says, “in our conviction that writing cannot be taught but that writers can be encouraged.”

“A nice conviction if you can afford it” might be the response of faculty working in less prestigious programs, and not everyone who teaches creative writing agrees about the irrelevance of the job. Some writers do seem to make it a matter of principle to bite the hand that writes the checks. Allen Tate, the poet and critic, complained that “the academically certified Creative Writer goes out to teach Creative Writing, and produces other Creative Writers who are not writers, but who produce still other Creative Writers who are not writers.” Tate ran the creative-writing program at Princeton, where John Berryman was a colleague. Kay Boyle once published a piece arguing that “all creative-writing programs ought to be abolished by law.” She taught creative writing for sixteen years at San Francisco State.

There is a lot of hyperbole in fashion (absolutely definitely more than there is in any other industry you can possibly dream of, ever), but hyperbole is the province of the low-ranking fashion person. The further up the ranks you climb, the more subdued your language becomes. At a certain point, you become too grand to enthuse. Ultimately you'll be too grand to even speak. From then on you communicate only through ironically arched eyebrows, displeased huffs and impatient snorts. No one's gonna be able to read much in your eyes, because they'll be cold, flinty and glazed, as if you're quite, quite bored - by everything and everybody.

MARK SIMPSON ON WARHOL AND THE ATHLETE QUESTION

I asked writer and journalist Mark Simpson father of Metrosexual and Sporno about Warhol predicting that athletes were going to be the new media stars, bigger and more beautiful than rock stars.

«It’s extremely annoying to find that Mr Warhol has been there first – yet again. Beckham of course became bigger than Elvis – or the Beatles – back in the early Noughties. I suppose that the best thing about sports stars today is that they’re really just very fit, very expensive bodies made available for our widescreen pleasure, without having to listen to them sing or even talk much as we did with rock stars.  Sports stars don’t have to pretend to be creative or interesting – they just have to move.  So we don’t have to pretend to be interested in their depth.  And when they stop moving Mr Armani can take a photograph of them with their legs open, which is also nice.»

«IT'S CALLED GOSSIP AND OF COURSE IT'S AN OBSESSION OF MINE»

What’s happening in this recession is unprecedented,” said Mark Perry, an economist at the University of Michigan. “It’s structurally different because the job losses are so concentrated among men.”Blue-collar jobs in manufacturing and construction are haemorrhaging while white-collar work in increasingly female-dominated, often publicly funded fields, such as education and health, are holding steady or growing. The vulnerability of men in the workplace has been compounded by a revolution in education, with women gaining 60% of all college degrees. According to Christina Hoff Sommers, author of The War Against Boys, women are forging ahead in the knowledge-based economy, turning feminist theories of female victimisation on their head. There is a “myth of the fragile girl”, she wrote in 2000, but “boys are more likely to cheat on tests, wind up in detention or drop out of school”. Nearly a decade later, those boys have grown up and are floundering in the job market.

«I NEVER READ, I JUST LOOK AT PICTURES»

TINA BROWN

Miss Brown became famous for, effectively, inventing the celebrity culture when she took over Vanity Fair in 1984. She now seems slightly to regret this, saying “the monster was let out of the box”. And she certainly doesn’t feel it’s relevant to America today. “Oh, God, I was bored with celebrity culture at Vanity Fair, which was why I left to go to The New Yorker,” she says.“I think a magazine editor tries to reflect and define the times they are living in. The rise of celebrity culture was what was happening in America just then. Our magazine chronicled and defined it.
