NEW STUDIO

Japanese artist Takashi Murakami, whose giant Buddha, bug-eyed monsters and magical mushrooms packed in huge crowds last year at the Museum of Contemporary Art, is putting down roots in Los Angeles. A multifaceted artist who embraces painting and sculpture, film and mass-produced goods as part of a single enterprise, he is planning to open an animation studio here next summer.Often called Japan's Andy Warhol and headquartered in Tokyo, Murakami already has a studio in New York. But he has decided that Hollywood is the place to expand his filmmaking capabilities. The new studio will operate under the umbrella of Kaikai Kiki, his production and artist-management company."Animation and film have always been among my greatest influences, ever since I first saw 'Star Wars' and Hayao Miyazaki's films," Murakami said in a statement.

“THE WORLD FASCINATES ME” -ANDY WARHOL

CHELSEA HOTEL

Punks, poets, painters, dropouts, drug fiends, drag queens - all have been welcome at the Chelsea hotel. Andy Warhol filmed there, Arthur Miller wrote there and Leonard Cohen met Janis Joplin there, going on to write a song about New York's most beloved hotel. But long-term tenants of the Chelsea - witnesses to a colourful history of fires, murders and suicides - believe it is in danger of losing its bohemian soul. They have launched numerous lawsuits against the hotel's owners because they fear eviction. And the new manager they blame for enforcing the crackdown is British....The 12-storey, 250-room Chelsea hotel was among the tallest buildings in New York when it was built in 1883. It became a residential hotel in 1905 and a celebrated retreat for musicians, painters and men of letters, including Mark Twain, William Burroughs and Tennessee Williams. In one room, Arthur C Clarke wrote 2001: A Space Odyssey, and in another Thomas Wolfe wrote You Can't Go Home Again. Dylan Thomas drank 18 glasses of whisky in a row in his room before falling into a coma and dying in a nearby hospital. Andy Warhol's muse Edie Sedgwick set fire to hers.

PHILOSOPHY FOR THE 21st CENTURY

People say we are what we have. They're wrong. We have what we are...

TOM OF FINLAND AND THE ADVERTISING WORLD

Tom, who worked as an illustrator in the Finnish advertising business until the early 1970s, when he became a full-time gay propagandist, sold the male body as a pleased, pleasuring and pleasured thing several decades before Calvin Klein thought of it. In the middle of the 20th century, Tom was effectively sketching the blueprint of 21st-century man. And boy, was he blue.
Before Tom no one drew men like he did, making them such unabashed sex objects and sex subjects, giving them such exaggerated male secondary - and primary! - sexual characteristics: big chins, strong jaws, full lips. Masculinity, and virility end up looking so... scrumptious. Buxom. Busty. Tom's men have round firm breasts, saucer-like aureolas and nipples you can adjust your thermostat with.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - R&B singer Chris Brown swept the American Music Awards on Sunday, winning three prizes including artist of the year. The 19-year-old star, famed for his on-stage athleticism, overshadowed Alicia Keys, who led the field with five nominations, and ended up with a pair of statuettes. Brown was clearly shocked when his name was announced for artist of the year, the ceremony's final award. "I probably was shocked like everybody else," Brown told reporters backstage at the Nokia Theater. "I know everybody was like, 'Huh?' I thought Coldplay should have genuinely won that award, but I'll take it!"
He was also named favorite male artist in both the soul/R&B and pop/rock categories. His girlfriend, Rihanna, won those categories for the women, beating Keys in both races.Keys' awards were for her chart-topping disc, "As I Am," which was named favorite album in the soul/R&B and pop/rock categories.

LEO CASTELLI

Lisa Phillips, director of the New Museum of Contemporary Art, in New York, believes that an artist’s importance is determined by his or her work alone. “That’s what will survive over time,” she points out. “Dan Flavin had zero charisma, but he was a great artist. Russell Crowe, the actor, is not charismatic, but his fame attracts a crowd. They’re different things.” On the other hand, she says, “Leo Castelli had great charisma. He was the number one dealer in New York, the top guy with the best stable of artists, a consummate gentleman who was very accepting and incredibly charming. And the genuine excitement he stirred up for the art came partly through the strength of his personality.”The New York dealer Mary Boone saw her own fame rise in the 1980s along with that of gallery artists like Ross Bleckner, Eric Fischl and Schnabel, especially after she collaborated with Castelli on a precedent-setting two-gallery show for Schnabel. “Leo used to tell me that his strength as a dealer was as a mythmaker,” she recalls. “I think he felt the art sold itself. It was people he made desirable.”

JESSICA SEEN EATING A BURGER!

The crowning blow came this week when the once-magisterial Associated Press imposed a 500-word limit on all of its entertainment writers. The 500-word limit applies to reviews, interviews, news stories, trend pieces and "thinkers." Oh, it can be done. But with "Synecdoche, New York? Worse, the AP wants its writers on the entertainment beat to focus more on the kind of brief celebrity items its clients apparently hunger for. The AP, long considered obligatory to the task of running a North American newspaper, has been hit with some cancellations lately, and no doubt has been informed what its customers want: Affairs, divorces, addiction, disease, success, failure, death watches, tirades, arrests, hissy fits, scandals, who has been "seen with" somebody, who has been "spotted with" somebody, and "top ten" lists of the above. (Celebs "seen with" desire to be seen, celebs "spotted with" do not desire to be seen.)

OLD AND BORING

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Britney Spears says her life is so dull under her father's watchful eye that she feels old and boring.
With her new album "Circus" out next week, the 26-year-old singer is working on a comeback after seeing her life spiral out of control with a run of strange behaviour, a bitter custody battle over her two sons and the loss of her rights to administer her own affairs."I feel like an old person now," Spears told Rolling Stone in an interview for the music magazine's December 11 issue."I do! I go to bed at, like, 9:30 every night and I don't go out or anything, you know what I mean? I just feel like an old fart."

PLUTOCRATIC SEX 101

Facing financial losses, more than 80 per cent of male multimillionaires will claw back on their mistress fund, according to a survey from Prince & Associates Inc., a Connecticut-based wealth research firm...In the face of the financial crisis, men proved to be the cheapos: 81 per cent said they planned to lower their mistresses' daily allowance, including cutting the limitless credit card. Seventy-five per cent planned to cut perks such as jet rides and elegant apartments, and 85 per cent gunned for cheaper gifts. By comparison, 54 per cent of female philanderers planned to raise their gigolos' allowances, possibly to draw their strapping hunks closer during tough times."I'm finding it's much better to be kept by women than men," Mr. Prince said.
Would the threat of a mistress leaving them get Scroogy male millionaires spending again? Mr. Prince said more than half were not concerned: "They don't care. They'll replace them."A long-time wealth analyst, Mr. Prince still was surprised by how blasé rich men were about divulging the fact that they keep mistresses. "It's like, 'Of course we do! THE OTHER POP ART

“Hip-hop is over for me. I sing, not rap, on this album. I now want to be grouped among those musicians you see in those old black and white photos - the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles. And I'm not going to get there by doing just another rap album full of samples. I've had to create a whole new musical genre to describe what I'm doing now and I'm calling it 'pop-art' - which is not to be confused with the visual art movement. I realise that my place and position in history is that I will go down as the voice of a generation."

«1983, 1984, it was almost like a dialogue going on, back and forth, and the subways were a way to continue the dialogue and put [out] images which I would get sometimes specifically from dance moves that I saw. . . you know, [persons who would] bend over backwards [to the floor] or somebody going underneath [in the moves called the bridge and the spider], things that I was seeing in dances and literally putting them right into the work - they knew, when they saw it, right away what it was."

MADONNA AND THE ART WORLD

In 1982, says Madonna's unofficial biographer, Andrew Morton, British singer Sade was serving drinks in the New York club the Danceteria. At the same time, the late artist Keith Haring, whose paintings would later sell for staggering sums, was doing shifts in the cloakroom. And in 1983, pop met art even more directly as the then little known Madonna embarked on a relationship with the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, Morton reports. Basquiat would go on to be hailed as genius and lionised by the New York art world until his death, from heroin addiction, in 1988. More widely known than the Basquiat link is Madonna's admiration for the work of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.

STRAIGHT WOMEN: THINKING LIKE GAY MEN FOR LOVE LIKE STRAIGHT WOMEN FOR SEX.

“So why didn't Playgirl matter to us? First, there was always the suspicion that Playgirl was a gay men's magazine in disguise. As a healthy, red-blooded straight female, I fancy men, but I have to admit that the photographs of fully erect hard-bodied "Campus Hunks 2008" sproinging off the pages of Playgirl's swan song print issue (it will continue online) are more of a turnoff than an enticement. From the casting to the lighting and decor, the atmosphere is just as cheesy as men's mags. And the amateur snapshots submitted by readers of their hairy selves tumescent and naked but for their tube socks are more one-night-stand nightmare than desirable fantasy. But more important, pictures of naked men hanging out on full display speak more of engineering than intimacy. As one friend noted, "they aren't sexy without a backstory." Apparently just looking at a picture of a naked man out of context isn't "hot" for most women. I actually find ads for Calvin Klein perfume with beautiful couples entwined on a windswept cliff more erotic.”

INTERVIEW MAGAZINE

Interview, which will be 40 years old next year, was way ahead of its time in being a magazine devoted to the cult of celebrity, defining the emerging stars of film, fashion, music and literature. It was also the pioneer of the Q&A style of interview, which has become a staple of publishing in the past four decades. And now Glenn O’Brien, who ran the magazine for Warhol in its early years after joining fresh from film school, is back in the editor’s chair.O’Brien’s latest edition of Interview includes pieces with Damien Hirst, Richard Prince, Jeff Koons and Cindy Sherman, some of the most influential artists alive, and the editor hopes it becomes a collector’s item for years to come. “I feel like people are going to keep it on the bookshelf for 10 or 20 years because it’s comprehensive and authoritative,” he says. “It’s not something you throw out it’s a periodical that has the qualities of a book.”O’Brien came to Interview back in 1970, eight issues after it started. Along with his friend and fellow film student at Columbia University Bob Colcello, he was summoned by Warhol to bring some sense to an editorial operation previously assigned to his acolytes in the wild surroundings of the artist’s studios ‘The Factory’.

LOS ANGELES — Conventional wisdom holds that Hollywood’s fortunes go up when the economy goes down. People still crave entertainment, particularly of the escapist variety, and movies remain within the budgets of most people.
That may prove true this time around, too — ticket sales have been particularly robust in recent weeks — but studio prosperity stopped depending on box-office results a long time ago. DVDs propel profits these days, and there is a creeping dread in the movie capital that buyer interest is plummeting as the global economic crisis worsens.

Now, finally, some help seems to be on the way. The House recently passed a bill that would allocate $18 billion for new construction projects. Barack Obama has signaled that he will sign a version of that bill and probably ask for tens of billions of dollars of additional spending to create badly needed jobs and help fix up America in the process. Money is going to start flowing. And yet when it comes to the nation’s infrastructure, money isn’t the main problem.
A lack of adequate financing is part of the problem, without doubt. But the bigger problem has been an utter lack of seriousness in deciding how that money gets spent. And as long as we’re going to stimulate the economy by spending money on roads, bridges and the like, we may as well do it right.

FAME IN THE 21st CENTURY

About 200,000 video shorts are added to YouTube each day and based on my painstaking hour of research I'm certain most of it is absolute crap.Millions of webcams in teenagers' bedroom all over the world are being used to create video, mainly of the teens themselves talking about themselves and broadcasting it to the planet. I'm also certain that their parents are not aware of this. The boys act like worthless rock stars, gangsters or jump their BMX bikes over their friends. Teen girls by the hundreds are posting videos of themselves kissing their female classmates, essentially setting fire to their political careers before they even graduate from high school. On YouTube everyone is famous, just as Andy Warhol predicted, and they are burning through their 15 minutes without much thought about the consequences of putting themselves out there on a medium that is both permanent (that's forever, kids) and universally available.

Never mind the change Obama's about to bring to Washington; what's his presidency going to mean to entertainment? Most Commanders-in-Chief leave big footprints on the culture. JFK launched America into the New Frontier amid visions of Camelot and cheery fare like The Dick Van Dyke Show. Reagan made it morning in America with a patriotic surge that produced Tom Cruise in Top Gun and the sweet excesses of Dynasty. George W. Bush set the world stage for jittery, paranoid dramas brimming with government conspiracies (even the Dark Knight violated wiretapping laws). And now there's a new guy moving into the West Wing — elected on a platform of hope — with the potential to plant Sasquatch-size tracks all over the zeitgeist. ''The idea of change and hope has permeated the country, regardless of politics, and that includes Hollywood,'' says Kevin Feige, president of production at Marvel Studios, home to Iron Man and the soon-to-be-launched Captain America.

They also emphasized appearances and the need to “sell it,” lest hopefuls forget they were auditioning for a television show. Some of the dancers had very little to sell, but then again reality television thrives on awkward moments and dashed hopes.
Still, not all reality shows are equal, as Mr. Lythgoe said during Friday’s lunch break, bemoaning that “disposable celebrities” have replaced true stars.

Dreamt up by two media studies academics – Su Holmes of the University of East Anglia and Sean Redmond, a lecturer at the University of Victoria, New Zealand – Celebrity Studies follows an increase in the publication of academic papers about celebs in recent years. To Dr Andy Miah, founder of the first celebrity culture conference in 2005, a publication of this kind was only a matter of time. "It doesn't surprise me. Celebrities have become a focal point of our value system which warrant our attention."But taking celebrity culture too seriously can seem ridiculous. Biographer and cultural commentator Graham McCann is sceptical of the academic approach: "There is plenty of room for irreverent commentaryas so much of the celebrity industry is complicit and mutually self-serving. The problem with analysis is that academics are obsessed with trying to identify patterns and processes, which leads to generalisations. They don't allow for the individuality or irrationality of a lot of celebrity culture. Looking at certain specific case studies may be illuminating; there might be moral lessons to be learnt. But academic findings of this sort are at best banal and at worst misleading."

Unlike Depp, they don't have a steady stream of projects keeping them in the public eye. Rather, they rely on media attention to keep them relevant--and famous.

The 50-year-old singer who was first romantically linked to the baseball player, nickname 'A-Rod', earlier this year before announcing her divorce from Guy Ritchie - has reportedly been gushing to close pals about the sportsman. A source said: "Madonna is smitten with Alex. She told a close friend that he has the heart of a poet trapped inside an insanely gorgeous body."It has also been claimed Alex has regularly been sending the mother-of-three "love notes". The source added to the New York Post newspaper: "Alex has been writing Madonna these sweet, personal and rambling expressions of his feelings - sort of like old-fashioned love notes." It was recently claimed Alex is so keen to make his relationship with Madonna work that he is moving in a bid to be closer to the singer.

MAKING IT (REALLY!).... IN HOLLWOOD.

But is nepotism a bad thing in this case? Should audiences care that Angelina Jolie's dad is Academy Award winner Jon Voight? Or that it was Tori Spelling's father who cast her in Beverly Hills, 90210? Jonathan Kuntz, a film historian at the University of California Los Angeles' department of Film, TV and Digital Media, doesn't think so. The way he sees it, celebrity relatives can often get an aspiring star a gig or two, but then they must stand on their own. Unlike industries where connections reign supreme, in Hollywood the audience ultimately decides who sticks around and who doesn't. Thompson argues that it's tougher for the A-list offspring. Perpetually compared with their established relatives, they're often held to higher standards than lesser-known peers. The result: These stars have to work overtime to prove they're famous because of talent, rather than a star-studded family tree.

CHRISTINA AGUILERA AND THE POP ART QUESTION

Christina Aguilera has been talking about her new look and what fans can expect from her sound in the future. Speaking to MTV News about her appearance at the 2008 Video Music Awards, Aguilera said: "I wanted to give [fans] a little sneak preview of what's to come [with her VMA performance]. The vein of the new material is a futuristic take on what is inspiring me at the moment... and it's got a very pop-art feel, visually."She continued: "[There's a] throwback to Andy Warhol and all the colours and vividness and bright boldness that was in that artwork. I'm a big collector of pop art and graffiti art at this point, too - D*Face and Banksy, also Roy Lichtenstein... and it's been very fun venturing off into that zone."Aguilera added: "I was very inspired by the look and feel of that [pop-art] genre, your Jane Birkins, your Blondies, females who have come before who have done this so many times and so well - almost as an homage to them. Also, speaking of Warhol, Nico from the Velvet Underground... so it all kind of ties in to a pop-art feel and twist, with a mod look. But a futuristic taste of what's to come."

YOU'RE A STAR!

Former commercial photographer Tania Cowher, 32, came up with the idea for Celeb4aday.com while watching Entertainment Tonight. "Who hasn't thought of what it would be like to live that life?" asks Tania, who launched the company in Austin in November 2007, followed by Los Angeles, San Francisco and, as of this past May, New York. "My staff and I are not professional paparazzi by any means but we've learned. We watched a lot of TMZ for our first client in Austin, then practiced in my driveway. We had to learn to walk backward and take pictures," she explains. The company now offers celebrity wannabe packages, including the A-List which gives clients four personal paparazzi for 30 minutes and a mock-up of a high-gloss tabloid magazine cover with their picture, for $730. The Superstar package ($990) lasts for an hour and the Megastar ($3,000) provides clients with six paparazzi for two hours, limo service, a publicist and a bodyguard.

STRAIGHT GUYS IS THE NEW GAY

THE MILLIONS DOLLARS...BARGAIN

NEW YORK (AFP) — Sotheby's bowed to economic realities and slashed estimates for much-hyped contemporary art works at an auction where almost a third of lots failed to sell.Of 63 works on offer in New York only 43 sold. Just a handful of works that did sell met their pre-auction price estimates and even fewer fetched more. The dismal showing at the auction house's autumn sale for ultra-fashionable contemporary work highlighted how the global financial crisis has knocked a hole in the recently booming luxury art market.Similar performances were seen at Sotheby's and rival Christies last week in their New York auctions of impressionist and modern art.Lead auctioneer Tobias Meyer put a brave face on the results, saying afterwards: "We are very happy with what happened tonight."He said that the hugely reduced prices reflected demand from a "seasoned, smart collecting community responding to great material."

"When the price was right, the audience responded and bought it. When the estimate might seem excessive, clearly they didn't."However, the auction of works by headline artists including Jeff Koons, Lucian Freud, Damien Hirst, and Andy Warhol, at times resembled a fire sale, rather than the spending frenzy seen in previous years.Among the works failing to meet their minimum price were paintings by Anish Kapoor, Roy Lichtenstein, Warhol, Freud and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
A large painting named "Archisponge" by Yves Klein was the biggest success, selling for over 21 million dollars. However, this was still shy of the pre-auction target announced as "in the region of 25 million dollars.""Beggar's Joys," a painting by Philip Guston, fetched 10.16 million dollars -- well under the target of 15 million dollars. Other bargains included Tom Wesslemann's "Great American Nude" at 4.14 million dollars, where the target had been six to eight million dollars.

The complete collection includes jeans, t-shirts, and denim and leather jackets and a variety of girls clothing. The girls clothing is bright and colourful and reminiscent of the Hirst Spin paintings. A hoodie, jacket and t-shirt can be matched with girl’s jeans to make a contemporary and interesting look. Mr. Hirst said, "I love the idea of art you can wear.“

Agnes Tann is the Levi’s brand strategic planner. She said, "World renowned artists from Peter Blake and Max Ernst to Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol all adopted the Levi's jeans as their favorite jeans. So, we are naturally thrilled and honored to have a creative genius like Damien Hirst bring his unique perspective to our iconic 501 jeans and the range of unique looks created for this collection."The Levi’s limited edition collection will be sold globally. Many people do not know that Pablo Picasso adopted the Levi Jeans as the clothing to wear while creating his masterpieces. He is said to be the first world-renowned artist to wear the jeans.

POST MONICA LEWINSKY ERA...

From a Palin sex doll to an homage adult movie, the sexualization of Palin won’t quit. Most recently, writer Rachel Kramer Bussel created Sarah Palin Erotica (http://sarahpalinerotica.com/), a site dedicated to erotic stories about the former Republican vice presidential candidate.

.F: Why do you think Americans are so sexually fascinated by Palin?

RKB: I think first it was because of her looks, but almost immediately her story, wild as it was, entranced people. Even those of us opposed to her politics couldn’t help but be captivated, and part of that captivation is her sexual allure. That doesn’t necessarily mean we all want to have sex with her (just to be clear, I don’t), but we want to know more about her, including what she’s like in bed. I read a UK reporter likening her to Princess Diana in terms of her appeal to the crowds. She’s brash, outspoken, gutsy. She’s a woman and a mother, in so many ways highly traditional, and yet totally not. I think she set off a lot of hot buttons around women’s roles in the home and workplace, as parents, and as sex objects. This story we’re hearing about her breezing into a hotel room dressed just in a towel—that’s not erotica, that’s real, yet it could be straight out of the story “The World of Men” by Delilah T. Jones.

I think we were fascinated by her, too, because she was so sure of herself, even when, perhaps, she shouldn’t have been. The sheer gumption she needed to push her way to the top is part of the charisma a good politician has, and that’s sexy. For many of us, her accent, her pushiness, her look were all things that made us wonder what made her tick. I think for any public figure, or authority figure, we wonder whether their sexual persona, what they do in private, what turns them on matches or is opposed to their public persona. For some of us, they’re exactly the same; for some, they’re different.

If Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin decides to call it quits in the political arena (oh, do we dare to even dream?) she can always make the leap into porn. And she'd make some pretty good money doing it. Porn director Cezar Capone is willing to pay Palin $2 million to appear in an adult film. That could buy a lot of guns! And don't think Capone is leaving Mr. Palin out of the picture; Todd was offered $100,000 and an Arctic Cat snowmobile to star alongside his wife.Capone says that Palin is a "beautiful mother recognized by all of America as well as the rest of the world" and calls her "the most desirable woman over 40." DID SHE HAVE SEX WITH THREE MEN AT THE SAME TIME?

Still, for those who feel that the day has sagged a little unless they have received at least one e-mail containing the phrases “Have you heard?” and “OMG!!!!!!!!!”, there were many heartening facts in the piece. For while many regard gossip as idle, spiteful junk-chat, Scientific American stoutly places it as an evolutionary cornerstone of successful, socialised behaviour.

“The nasty side of gossip usually overshadows the more benign ways it functions in society,” Frank T. Andrew began. “But gossip can be a way of learning the unwritten rules of social groups and cultures ... [it is] a social bonding mechanism.” The article painted a picture of early man gathering to fight off a mammoth attack, pausing between axe-blows only to say: “I hear Johnson's wife had a Neanderthal baby. Johnson's gonna have to be asking some difficult questions ... when his vocabulary expands from 'Run!', 'Good food' and 'I sex your lady difference?', anyway.”

PLAYING THE ADVERTISING GAME IN THE 21st CENTURY

Forget "product placement" -- that's so 20th century. Even "product integration" is passé. Advertisers these days want to do far more than just place BMWs, Manolo Blahnik shoes, and other luxury items within reach of favorite TV and movie characters. They want to create entire worlds of consumption. For instance:CW Television Network's "Gossip Girl" features characters whose lifestyles are driven by the Prada bags they want and the La Perla lingerie the highly sexualized characters need. Actresses in "Roommates," a MySpace TV Web series, use their characters' online profiles to chat with fans and dish out information about their clothing and other products as well as advice on where to buy them. These are the heady days of "brand integration" and "immersive" commercial environments.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A Hollywood paparazzo famous for being sued by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and getting his teeth knocked out by Marlon Brando is unapologetic about the guerrilla celebrity photography culture he helped pioneer.
But Ron Galella, who at 77 still has an active press pass, says he has little interest in being part of a celebrity photo industry that now values controversy over glamour.Galella has a new book titled "No Pictures" that shows famous faces like Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger and actors Sean Penn and Elizabeth Taylor shielding themselves from his lens. He says celebrities who act like they do not want to be photographed are hypocrites who secretly adore the attention. Galella says the paparazzi business has changed since his heyday."When I started it was one to one. Me and Jackie. Me and Liz Taylor," he told Reuters in an interview in his New Jersey home, which is decorated with pictures of just about every major celebrity. "I like glamour. Entrepreneurs worldwide have been trying to cash in on the enormous popularity of the first African-American president the U.S. has elected. ART & COMMERCE

The work itself, though, is something else. Some might argue that Haring could produce so much art because it was all generally the same (the motifs of dance, dogs, hearts, and mutating figures are repeated almost ad nauseum); and they wouldn’t be totally wrong. In fact, its very simplicity is what helped allow Haring to create a mini-industry of mass-produced T-shirts, buttons and books for sale in his own New York store, an idea that must have had Warhol slapping his forehead in exasperation. But after viewing Clausen’s film, whatever one’s opinion is of Haring’s work itself, his drive and determination remains not only impressive but still somehow less crass and money-obsessed than the art of onetime Haring cohort and interviewee David LaChappelle. (Haring’s impressive charity-work resume and generous habit of giving people whole small drawings as autographs certainly helps.) For all the frankness about commerce and popularity here, there is also a refreshing optimism in Haring’s art that one would have a hard time finding in much pop art, before or since.

À LA DAVID HOCKNEY

WHY BRITNEY IS GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH!

Psychology Today gathered some of the latest research on how celebrities effect our mental state. The studies suggest that thinking about important cultural icons, like Oprah or Lance Armstrong, may actually reduce one's fear of death. One experiment found that people believe airplanes are less likely to crash if a well respected celebrity is on board (despite plenty of examples to the contrary). Another showed that people who have death on the mind tend to think celebrities are more important and will be remembered longer than do people in a neutral group. The theory here is that when we are worried about the limits of our own mortality, we tend to put our faith in the celebrities we admire, imagining that our beliefs and values will live on in their legacy. As an added boost, celeb gossip is like an instant Valium: "It is widely known for humans that chocolate stimulates the release of endorphins, and therefore eating chocolate stimulates feelings of happiness. Gossip is [also] an instant stimulator of endorphins."

CHANNELING THE ZEITGEIST

"It just caught my eye," he said of Race Riots in 1966. Two years later, he added, "I feel I represent the US in my art, but I'm not a social critic. I just paint those objects in my paintings because those are the things I know best."Of course, Warhol was notoriously and deliberately flaky in interviews, so we write off much that he said and look for clues in his work. The consensus verdict: his art is about media, celebrity, and the nature of art. The corollary: he focused on electric chairs, atomic mushroom clouds, Chinese dictator Mao Zedong, and Communist hammers and sickles because they were in the news at the time — he was just channeling the zeitgeist.

“MORE THAN ANYTHING PEOPLE JUST WANT STARS” -ANDY WARHOL

FROM THE LAST TANGO IN PARIS TO A NIGHT IN PARIS

When "Deep Throat" was made in the early 1970s, porn was still considered too underground for the actors to use their real names. When the X-rated movie's director, Gerard Rocco Damiano (a.k.a. Jerry Gerard), died last month, Time magazine eulogized him at length, praising his smarts, ambition and personal decency while calling his movie "the 'Citizen Kane' of porn."Fashion also is taking more aesthetic cues from porn, including the growing popularity of genital piercing and shaving, which was popularized by adult film actors. In May, Fox News' resident "sexpert," Yvonne K. Fulbright, made a reference to adult film while taking up the topic of genital grooming. "It's no longer simply a style concern for porn stars," she counseled, "it seems that everyone now -- guy or gal -- is giving at least some thought to pubic hair care."Asked why adult stars have become more acceptable in Hollywood, Soderbergh cited the proliferation of Internet porn and the attitudinal sea change signified by the infamous bootleg video showing socialite Paris Hilton having sex with a paramour. In years past, such a tape likely would've destroyed reputations. Instead, it boosted Hilton's paparazzi profile."That changed everything," Soderbergh says. "Or it didn't change everything; it confirmed that everything had changed."

Grey isn't the only young adult-film performer gaining wider exposure in Hollywood these days. Katie Morgan, a business-savvy 28-year-old who has made dozens of adult films, is currently appearing in indie director Kevin Smith's R-rated slacker-cool comedy " Zack and Miri Make a Porno," which opened on Halloween to strong reviews. Distributed by Weinstein Co., the film stars Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks as a pair of down-and-out platonic friends in suburban Pittsburgh who decide to make an amateur skin flick to pay off their debts. It appears likely to be Smith's most commercially successful film.

OBSESSED ABOUT TIME PASSING BY...

ALBANY — If you ever stopped by Andy Warhol’s Factory, you could be pretty sure he would want you to pose for his camera.
“I can hear him say something like ‘make a face’ or ‘move around’ or ‘take off your shirt,’ ” said Roberta Bernstein, the pop icon’s former assistant and an art historian.Or, he might ask someone to drop their drawers.“That was typical of Andy. He had a naughty side to his personality. He would never force anyone to do anything, but he could sense what he could get someone to do,” said Bernstein.Yet it wasn’t the naughty side that his camera was nourishing. His camera fed his obsessive need to track every moment of his life. In 1966, Bernstein worked with Warhol at his East 47th Street Factory. At that point, he used a tape recorder to document his life.

KEITH HARING

Haring's exuberant pop sensibility combined with his owlish looks and gregarious personality made him, in the words of a friend, "a true phenomenon." Galleries and collectors fought over his work and he became a fixture on N.Y.'s clubby art scene.
Whereas many artists get less interesting when they become famous, Haring became more so. That's because of the sincerity and intensity of his impulse, visible in that subway work, to bring art to the people. Accessibility was a key concept for him, and whether it was opening a store called the Pop Shop in SoHo or doing elaborate drawings on give-away T-shirts, he held true to his beliefs. When Haring was diagnosed with AIDS, the disease that killed him in 1990, one of the things he did was throw himself with remarkable energy into a series of public art projects that reflected this generosity of spirit. Though collaborators and friends like Bill T. Jones reflect thoughtfully on a man whose impulse, Jones says, "was to do the work and live the life," it is the passion and commitment we see in the artist himself that makes the most lasting impression.

However, I've never wanted to meet Madonna. Madonna the spectacle, yes. Madonna, the cultural provocateur, yes. Madonna, the producer, not creator, yes. Madonna, the person, no. It's almost as if she is incapable of being anything other than Madonna The Myth, something she has created. I love it. Who would want to meet Madonna when the myth has a more fantastic life of its own? You could blame the myth on the cab driver who dropped her off where the action was hot. In '77 NYC (the year of Punk, Disco and Madonna) there was an art revolution going on: Television, Blondie, Arthur Russell, Larry Levine's Paradise Garage, the Ramones, disco, punk rock, club culture and, of course, the godfather of New York City, Andy Warhol. Warhol has held sway over her entire career. Madonna, like Warhol, is the ultimate observer of, rather than participant in, modern culture. She took Warhol's template of ambition and success being an art form and regenerated it into a pop career presented not only as art, but a mirror on society, reflecting our tastes and aspirations; whether it be the yuppie life of Material Girl to the pre-00 new age observations of Ray of Light. Her reinventions are a reflection of us, not her, as she has always lacked a 'grand purpose' or 'natural conclusion' of most rock'n'roll stories.
